Lenovo Legion Go S at CES 2025: Why Its Official SteamOS Model Matters

The Legion Go S was Lenovo’s CES 2025 handheld with Windows and SteamOS options. Its official third-party SteamOS support matters, but configuration, compatibility, and price determine whether it beats a Steam Deck.

Lenovo revealed the Legion Go S on January 7, 2025, with both Windows and SteamOS versions. The SteamOS model was the important announcement: it became the first officially licensed third-party handheld to ship with Valve’s operating system outside the Steam Deck family. Lenovo initially expected it to start at $499.99 and arrive from May 2025, although later retail configurations and prices varied substantially.

The short version

The Legion Go S is an 8-inch gaming handheld with integrated controls, a 55.5Wh battery, a 1920×1200 display, and configuration-dependent AMD Ryzen processors. Buyers can choose between Windows and SteamOS models.

SteamOS is the better fit for players whose libraries are mainly on Steam and who want a console-like interface. Windows remains the more flexible option for Xbox Game Pass PC, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Windows applications, and games that depend on incompatible anti-cheat systems.

This is not simply a “Steam Deck killer.” The Go S offers a larger 120Hz variable-refresh display and higher-performance configurations, but the Steam Deck remains the value and software-maturity benchmark.

What Lenovo announced at CES 2025

Lenovo announced the Legion Go S at CES on January 7, 2025. The company presented two product families: a Windows-based Legion Go S and a Legion Go S powered by SteamOS. Lenovo’s announcement described SteamOS features including cloud saves, Remote Play, Steam Store access, Steam Library access, and a handheld-focused interface.

Lenovo also showed the Legion Go 2 as a separate prototype. It should not be confused with the Go S: the Go 2 was a concept for a future device, while the Go S was the product intended for sale.

The SteamOS version was initially expected from May 2025 at a starting price of $499.99. Those were announcement-time estimates, not a guarantee that every useful configuration would sell for that amount.

Why SteamOS was the big story

A Windows handheld can run Steam, but that does not make it a SteamOS device. Windows brings a desktop operating system, desktop-style menus, launcher management, and occasional controller or power-management friction to a small touchscreen.

  • Broad Game Compatibility with Windows 11: The Windows 11 Operating system provides maximum game platform and title compatibility.
  • Lenovo PureSight Gaming Display: The 8" Lenovo PureSight Display offers a larger, ultra-vibrant screen space for immersive gaming. A 120Hz refresh rate and VRR ensure smooth, responsive play. With a 16:10 aspect ratio, 500 nits brightness, 100% sRGB color, and 10-point touch support, visuals are vivid, and interactions precise.
  • Take Full Control: Legion TrueStrike Controllers deliver all-day comfort and precision with an anti-slip texture for total control. Adjustable triggers switch effortlessly between short and long presses. Hall effect joysticks and triggers ensure smooth, accurate movements. A touchpad, Pivot D-Pad, RGB joysticks, and Legion O power button add style and functionality.
  • Designed for Comfort, Built to Last: The Lenovo Legion Go S features a lightweight 1.6 lb (730g) ergonomic unibody for fatigue-free gaming. Its Nebula polymer finish resists dirt and oil, while an anti-slip texture ensures a secure grip. With dual USB Type-C ports and a combo audio jack, it seamlessly connects to your accessories. Built to last with Windows 11 Home.
  • With 128GB MicroSD card, Mytrix 5-in-1 hub, microfiber cleaning cloth, and 9H tempered glass screen protector.

SteamOS is designed around a controller-first gaming interface. It can boot directly into a console-like environment, integrate Steam Input and library tools, support cloud saves and Remote Play, and provide compatibility information before a game is launched. Valve’s announcement about expanding SteamOS beyond the Steam Deck called the Legion Go S the first officially licensed third-party SteamOS handheld.

The distinction also matters for support. Valve and Lenovo can coordinate firmware, controls, power management, and Legion-specific fixes. Valve later added official Legion Go S support in a May 22, 2025 SteamOS update, including a Legion Go S recovery image and a SteamOS-compatible library tab.

That does not mean SteamOS runs every game. SteamOS is Linux-based and uses Proton to run many Windows games. Anti-cheat systems, unsupported launchers, DRM, Windows-only utilities, and game-specific bugs can still prevent a title from working properly. Check the compatibility status of favorite games rather than treating access to the Steam Store as a guarantee of compatibility.

Depending on the model, the Go S can use AMD Ryzen Z2 Go or Ryzen Z1 Extreme processors, with up to 32GB of LPDDR5X memory and 512GB or 1TB of storage. Lenovo’s CES material also listed a 1.61-pound weight for the Windows-based model. A Tom’s Hardware review unit used the Ryzen Z1 Extreme, Radeon 780M integrated graphics, 32GB of LPDDR5X-6400 memory, a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD, and a 65W charger.

The display is one of the strongest hardware features. Its 16:10 aspect ratio gives more vertical space than a 16:9 panel, while VRR can smooth fluctuations in frame rate. However, 120Hz is not a promise of 120 frames per second in demanding games. Many modern titles will still need reduced settings, upscaling, or a lower output resolution.

Controls and design

Unlike the original Legion Go, the Go S uses integrated controllers rather than detachable modules. Lenovo highlighted TrueStrike controls, adjustable trigger switches, Hall-effect joysticks, and a fused controller-and-chassis design.

This is a more conventional handheld layout. It sacrifices the original Go’s detachable-controller feature and built-in kickstand, but it may be simpler and more comfortable for players who want a traditional all-in-one device. Tom’s Hardware also noted two USB-C ports, a microSD slot, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

SteamOS versus Windows

Choose SteamOS when you want… Choose Windows when you want…
A controller-first interface Xbox Game Pass PC
Simpler Steam library navigation Epic, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, and other launchers
Steam Input and handheld-focused controls Windows desktop applications and utilities
Steam cloud saves and Remote Play integration Maximum compatibility with Windows-only software
A more console-like suspend-and-resume experience Fewer Proton and anti-cheat compatibility questions

SteamOS can also be more efficient in some games because it avoids the overhead and interface layers of Windows. Tom’s Hardware reported a 4–15fps advantage in its testing after installing SteamOS on a Ryzen Z2 Go system, and substantially stronger results from its Ryzen Z1 Extreme SteamOS review unit than its Windows comparison system. Those results are not universal: the comparisons involved different configurations, and performance changes with the processor, wattage, resolution, power profile, and game.

SteamOS also does not eliminate PC maintenance. Users may still encounter shader compilation, Proton changes, controller-profile problems, external-display quirks, SD-card issues, and firmware updates.

Performance, battery life, and thermals

The 55.5Wh battery is substantial for a handheld, but high-performance processors and the 1920×1200 panel can consume it quickly. In Tom’s Hardware’s testing, the Z1 Extreme model lasted about two hours and five minutes in Red Dead Redemption 2 at 800p and about two hours and 30 minutes in BeamNG under its specified conditions. The fans were audible during gaming, while a measured rear hot spot reached 91°F and the grips remained comfortable.

These are test results, not a universal battery promise. Brightness, resolution, frame-rate limits, game choice, processor, memory configuration, and power mode all matter. A 1200p output, high brightness, and performance profile can reduce runtime much faster than a capped 800p or 720p setting.

Price and configuration confusion

The CES prices describe expected starting points, not one fixed Go S specification:

Family or configuration Announcement or reported price Important qualification
Windows Legion Go S From $729.99 initially Lenovo also forecast additional configurations from $599.99
SteamOS Legion Go S Expected from $499.99 Lenovo’s CES 2025 estimate
SteamOS Ryzen Z2 Go About $599 in later reporting Reported 16GB/512GB configuration
SteamOS Ryzen Z1 Extreme $829.99 in Tom’s Hardware coverage Reported 32GB/1TB review configuration

Before buying, verify the exact processor, RAM, storage, operating system, and country-specific price on Lenovo’s official product page. Do not treat the $499.99 CES estimate as the current price of every SteamOS model.

Legion Go S versus Steam Deck

The Legion Go S is attractive to Steam-first players who want more performance options, a larger 8-inch display, 120Hz VRR, and integrated controls. The Steam Deck remains compelling for buyers who prioritize a lower price, a mature SteamOS ecosystem, a large community, and established troubleshooting resources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither device is automatically better. The comparison depends on the Go S processor and price, the game being played, power settings, display preference, battery expectations, and compatibility needs. The Steam Deck is usually the safer value choice for well-supported Steam games; the Go S is more interesting for buyers willing to pay for a larger, faster display and higher-end hardware.

Who should buy the SteamOS Legion Go S?

  • Consider it if you primarily play Steam games, want a console-like interface, value Steam Input and suspend/resume, and are comfortable checking Proton compatibility.
  • Choose the Windows version if Game Pass PC, Epic, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Windows software, mods, or peripheral utilities are central to your use.
  • Choose a Steam Deck if price, SteamOS maturity, and community support matter more than the Go S’s larger display and higher-performance configurations.

The timeline in one glance

  1. January 7, 2025: Lenovo announces the Windows and SteamOS Legion Go S at CES 2025.
  2. May 2025: Lenovo’s announced window for SteamOS availability.
  3. May 22, 2025: Valve adds official Legion Go S support, a recovery image, and device-specific SteamOS improvements.

The lasting importance of the Legion Go S is therefore not just its screen or processor. It is the shift from treating SteamOS as Steam Deck software to treating it as a platform that selected hardware partners can officially support. For a Steam-first player, that can make the Go S a much better handheld than a Windows machine with Steam merely installed. For everyone else, the operating-system choice is a compatibility decision before it is a performance decision.
