If an exclamation mark appears at the bottom of Discord’s server list, it usually means that one or more servers you belong to are temporarily unavailable. The symbol does not, by itself, mean the server was deleted, that you were banned, or that your account failed verification.
Its meaning depends on exactly where it appears. Discord’s labels and icon placement can vary between desktop, browser, and mobile, so check the symbol’s location, color, and any tooltip before drawing conclusions.

What the Discord exclamation mark usually means
Discord has historically used a red exclamation indicator at the bottom of the server list to signal that one or more guilds—Discord’s technical term for servers—are unavailable. This can be caused by a temporary Discord outage, a regional connection problem, or a server-specific failure.
Discord may show that several servers are unavailable without identifying them. That can happen because the client cannot retrieve enough information from an unavailable guild to tell you exactly which one is affected. See Discord’s support-community explanation of unavailable guilds.

The most useful rule is: an exclamation mark at the bottom of the server list is primarily an availability warning, not a moderation or verification warning.
Check where the symbol appears
| Location | Likely explanation |
|---|---|
| Bottom of the server list | One or more servers are temporarily unavailable. This is the strongest match for Discord’s historical outage indicator. |
| Over or beside one server icon | That server, or some of its channels, may be unavailable or failing to load. This interpretation is likely but is not defined by a current universal Discord Help Center article. |
| Inside a channel or beside a message | A channel, permission, message, or connection error. Do not assume the entire server is offline. |
| On a user profile | Possibly a profile or mutual-server loading problem. User reports of orange profile exclamation marks are separate from the server-list outage indicator. |
| Beside a server name in Discovery | Likely a server-type badge rather than an outage warning. |
If the basic explanation does not fit, note the mark’s exact position, color, and hover text—or include a screenshot when asking for help.
How to identify the affected server
- Hover over the mark on desktop or browser. Discord may show a message such as an unavailable-server warning or a count of affected servers.
- Tap the symbol on mobile if Discord exposes a tooltip or status message.
- Open another server. If other servers work normally, the problem may be limited to one guild.
- Check direct messages and friends. If those also fail to load, a broader Discord or network problem is more likely.
- Compare clients. Try the browser version, desktop app, or mobile app.
- Ask another member. If everyone is affected, the problem is probably server-side or Discord-side. If only you are affected, investigate your client, network, permissions, or account.
Discord may not reveal the affected server even when the indicator reports a number of unavailable guilds. That limitation is described in Discord’s support-community discussion about identifying offline servers.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat to do when it appears
If only one server seems affected
- Wait a few minutes and reload Discord.
- Try the server in the browser, mobile app, or desktop app.
- Ask another member whether the server loads for them.
- Contact a moderator or owner through another channel if one exists.
- Do not leave and rejoin just to clear the icon. Leaving may require a new invite, and it will not repair a Discord-side outage.
If several servers are affected
- Restart Discord.
- Check your internet connection.
- Try another network, such as mobile data.
- Check Discord’s official service-status information manually.
- Wait for service restoration rather than changing server settings.
If only your account or device is affected
- Update and restart the Discord client.
- Try a private browser window or another device.
- Sign out and back in only if you know your login and authentication details.
- Consider corrupted local app data or a client-specific loading problem.
- Do not immediately assume the server owner banned or removed you.
These are practical diagnostics, not guaranteed Discord remedies. Reinstalling Discord is usually unnecessary for a brief outage; test another client and network first.

Does it mean the server was deleted, or that you were banned?
No—not from the exclamation mark alone. An unavailable server can look similar to a deleted server or an access restriction.
| What you observe | More likely explanation |
|---|---|
| The warning appears briefly and then disappears | Temporary outage or loading failure. |
| Everyone cannot access the server | Server-side or Discord-side problem. |
| Only your account cannot access it while others can | Possible kick, ban, permission issue, account problem, or client failure. |
| The server disappears permanently and its invite fails | Possible deletion or removal of your access, but confirm with the owner or another member. |
| Discord displays an explicit restriction notice | Account or moderation action is more likely. |
There is no retrieved official Discord source that maps this exclamation mark specifically to server deletion. Treat deletion, banning, and kicking as alternative explanations only when the broader evidence supports them.
Is it a server verification warning?
Usually not. Discord’s member Verification Levels—None, Low, Medium, High, and Highest—control requirements such as verified email, account age, time in the server, and phone verification. They do not explain an exclamation mark in the server list.

Likewise, enabling or disabling Community or Discovery will not normally remove an availability indicator. Community servers and discoverability are separate features; consult Discord’s documentation on enabling Server Discovery if you are troubleshooting those settings specifically.
Why can only some channels be unavailable?
A server can experience a partial failure in which some channels do not load or are temporarily disabled while the rest of Discord works. A Discord support-community report describes a red exclamation mark in connection with temporarily disabled channels, but that is user-reported evidence rather than a formal definition of every current exclamation-mark variant.
Record which channels fail, whether other members see the same problem, and whether the issue changes between clients. That information is more useful than changing verification settings or leaving the server.
When to contact Discord or the server owner
Contact the server owner or moderators when the issue affects multiple members and you have another way to reach them. Contact Discord Support when the problem continues across clients and networks, Discord works for other users, or your account shows a specific restriction notice.

For a short-lived warning with no account notice, waiting and retrying is generally the safest response. Discord’s public documentation does not currently provide one definitive Help Center explanation for every exclamation-mark design, so the symbol’s location and the behavior of the affected server remain important.

Why can’t Discord tell me which server is unavailable?
Discord may show a count without naming the guild because it cannot retrieve enough information from the unavailable server to identify it.
Will the exclamation mark disappear by itself?
It often disappears when the server or Discord connection recovers, although a client restart or reload may be needed.

Does the mark mean I was banned?
Not by itself. A ban is more plausible if the server works for other members but remains inaccessible only to your account.
Does it mean the server was deleted?
Not necessarily. Confirm deletion with the owner or other members and check whether the server remains accessible after Discord reconnects.
Is it the same as Discord’s Verified badge?
No. Verified and Community servers use separate badges and tooltips; an exclamation mark is generally an availability warning.
