The Lenovo Legion Go S was the first officially licensed third-party handheld to ship with Valve’s SteamOS. Announced at CES 2025 for an expected May starting price of $499.99, it brought SteamOS beyond the Steam Deck without requiring owners to install an unofficial image. As of August 16, 2026, Valve’s official SteamOS page lists the Steam Deck and Legion Go S as its supported devices.

The important buying caveat is that “Legion Go S” describes multiple configurations. The Z1 Extreme 8APU1 and Z2 Go 8ARP1 models are not interchangeable performance-wise, and regional availability varies.

Why the Legion Go S mattered

The Legion Go S was more than another AMD gaming handheld. It marked Valve’s decision to license SteamOS for third-party hardware. Valve, not Lenovo, develops and owns SteamOS; Lenovo supplied the handheld hardware.

There is a meaningful difference between installing SteamOS yourself, buying a device that happens to boot it, and buying hardware officially licensed and supported by Valve. The Legion Go S belongs to the third category. Valve described it as the first officially licensed handheld to ship with SteamOS in its announcement.

The $499.99 figure was Lenovo’s announced expected starting price for May 2025, not a reliable current price. Check the live regional product page for today’s price, stock, warranty, and configuration.

Legion Go S specifications

Both major families use the same general handheld design: an integrated-control chassis rather than the detachable controllers found on the original Legion Go.

Model family Processor Memory Storage
8APU1 AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme, 8 cores/16 threads, up to 5.1GHz 16GB or 32GB LPDDR5X-7500 Up to 1TB SSD
8ARP1 AMD Ryzen Z2 Go, 4 cores/8 threads, up to 4.3GHz 16GB or 32GB LPDDR5/LPDDR5X-6400 Up to 1TB SSD

The Z1 Extreme is the stronger and more clearly documented configuration in early SteamOS coverage. Do not assume that a Z2 Go listing delivers the same CPU or gaming performance. Lenovo’s 8APU1 PSREF and 8ARP1 PSREF identify the differences.

  • 8-inch 16:10 WUXGA touchscreen
  • 1,920 × 1,200 resolution
  • 120Hz refresh rate with variable refresh rate
  • 500-nit brightness and 100% sRGB coverage
  • Two USB4 ports with 40Gbps data, DisplayPort 1.4, and USB Power Delivery 3.0
  • microSD card reader, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3
  • 55.5Wh battery and 65W USB-C charger
  • Approximately 730–740g, depending on configuration

Memory is soldered and cannot be upgraded. If you expect to keep the handheld for years, use demanding games, run desktop software, or experiment with emulation and mods, 32GB is the more flexible choice. That is a practical inference from the fixed-memory design, not a manufacturer performance guarantee.

  • With 128GB MicroSD card, Mytrix 5-in-1 hub, microfiber cleaning cloth, and 9H tempered glass screen protector.

Storage details also require care. Lenovo documentation describes different M.2 form factors across models and configurations, including M.2 2242 retail units and an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slot in PSREF documentation. Verify the exact SKU before buying an SSD or planning a recovery installation.

What SteamOS changes

SteamOS is a Linux-based operating system that uses Proton to run many Windows games. Its main advantage on a handheld is not simply that it is Linux; it is that the system is designed around a controller-first Steam interface.

You can navigate the library without repeatedly dealing with a Windows desktop, use Steam Cloud, Steam Chat, recording features, and suspend-and-resume behavior, then enter desktop mode when you need a browser, files, other applications, or another launcher. SteamOS is not locked to Steam, but software outside Steam generally requires more manual setup than it does on Windows. Valve’s SteamOS page documents desktop mode, Proton, and its compatibility approach.

Valve’s page reported more than 18,000 checked titles when last crawled. Treat that as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent total.

Game compatibility: access is not a guarantee

Steam’s compatibility labels are a useful starting point:

Verified does not mean guaranteed 60fps at 1,920 × 1,200. Ratings are closely associated with Steam Deck expectations, while the Legion Go S has a different display, controls, firmware, and performance envelope.

Games that are often favorable candidates include Steam Deck Verified titles, many indie games, older PC games, single-player games using common Windows APIs, and games with controller support and scalable graphics. Possible trouble spots include multiplayer games with unsupported anti-cheat, kernel-level Windows drivers, aggressive DRM, awkward third-party launchers, and mouse-and-keyboard-focused interfaces.

Before buying, check the specific multiplayer games you play. Anti-cheat support can change when developers or Proton change their software.

Choosing settings for the 1,920 × 1,200 screen

The high-resolution panel is an advantage for text, desktop use, and sharp games, but it can demand more GPU performance than the Steam Deck’s 1,280 × 800 display. Demanding games may be better at 1,280 × 800 or 1,280 × 720 with FSR or another upscaler, reduced shadows and textures, and a frame-rate cap. A lower refresh rate can also reduce power use. The panel’s maximum resolution is not automatically the best gaming resolution.

Legion Go S SteamOS versus Steam Deck

Legion Go S advantages Steam Deck advantages
Larger 8-inch display Valve-designed hardware and software integration
120Hz and VRR More mature SteamOS experience
More powerful configurations than the original Steam Deck hardware Established repair resources, accessories, and community guides
Up to 32GB memory and two USB4 ports Typically stronger value when discounted or comparing lower-storage models
Official SteamOS support on non-Valve hardware Trackpads and more established compatibility expectations

The Legion Go S is heavier than a Steam Deck, and its larger panel can consume more power when games are rendered at native resolution. It also lacks Steam Deck-style trackpads. Performance depends on the exact processor, memory, wattage mode, game, resolution, and upscaling; without a common test method, “faster” is too broad to be useful.

Legion Go S SteamOS versus the Windows model

The hardware may be similar within a particular configuration, but the operating-system experience is substantially different.

SteamOS edition Windows edition
SteamOS preinstalled and officially supported by Valve for this device Windows 11 Home
Controller-first Steam interface, Cloud, Chat, and recording integration Native access to Xbox PC Game Pass and major Windows launchers
Desktop mode and manual installation of other software Conventional Windows applications and broader compatibility
Steam interface and related controls are central Lenovo Legion Space is available

Choose SteamOS if most of your library is on Steam and you want a console-like experience. Choose Windows if Game Pass, Epic, Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, EA App, ordinary Windows programs, or anti-cheat-dependent multiplayer games are essential. Lenovo identifies Legion Space as a Windows-only feature on this product family.

SteamOS can run other launchers through desktop mode, but that may involve installing the launcher manually, adding it as a non-Steam game, selecting Proton compatibility, and creating controller mappings. It is flexibility, not Windows-level convenience.

Controls and everyday use

The Go S has integrated analog sticks, face buttons, shoulder buttons, triggers, and additional controls identified by Lenovo on applicable listings. Steam Input can remap controls, and SteamOS button labels may differ from the Windows Legion Space arrangement. Lenovo distinguishes the Windows Legion Space button from the SteamOS quick-access-menu button on some listings, so check the regional SKU rather than assuming every unit has identical labeling.

The absence of trackpads matters for desktop navigation, strategy games, shooters, and other software that expects mouse precision. Steam Input can help, but it does not turn a conventional stick-and-button layout into a trackpad.

Updates and recovery

To check for SteamOS updates on the Legion Go S:

  1. Open the Steam Menu.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open System.
  4. Select Check For Updates beside Software Updates.
  5. Choose Apply if an update is available.
  6. Restart if prompted.

Steam Client updates are handled separately and may install automatically after a restart. Updates can include general SteamOS changes and Legion Go S-specific fixes, but do not assume every update improves performance. Keep the charger connected before a major update and back up important data before recovery or reimaging. Lenovo has also published device-specific fixes, including a notice about SteamOS joystick-light behavior.

If SteamOS will not boot, first identify the exact model: 8APU1/83N6 or 8ARP1/83L3. Use Lenovo’s SteamOS FAQ and recovery guidance for the matching family. A factory recovery can erase the internal drive, so back up data where possible, keep the charger connected, and never flash an image intended for another Go S generation. If the device cannot boot or the problem appears to involve firmware, display output, controls, or hardware, contact Lenovo support.

Can SteamOS be installed on other handhelds?

Valve says it is working to broaden SteamOS compatibility, but its current official device list is narrower than the universe of hardware that may boot a SteamOS image. As of August 16, 2026, that list names the Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion Go S.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Windows Legion Go S may share much of its hardware with a factory SteamOS model, but an unofficial installation is not the same as official factory support. The distinction affects validation, recovery, device-specific integration, and troubleshooting.

Which Legion Go S should you buy?

  • Z1 Extreme, 32GB: The clearest choice for buyers who want the strongest documented Go S configuration and long-term memory headroom.
  • Z2 Go, 32GB: Consider it when the price and availability are attractive, but do not infer Z1 Extreme-level performance from the newer branding.
  • Z2 Go, 16GB: Suitable for a tighter budget, though soldered memory leaves less headroom for demanding games, desktop work, mods, and emulation.
  • SteamOS: Best for a primarily Steam-based library and console-style simplicity.
  • Windows: Best for Game Pass, non-Steam launchers, Windows applications, and games with restrictive anti-cheat.

Confirm the processor, memory, storage form factor, warranty, region, and operating system on the exact listing. Lenovo’s specifications and availability vary by model and country.

Verdict

The Legion Go S is significant because it made SteamOS an officially supported platform on third-party handheld hardware. It is a strong fit for Steam-focused players who want a larger 8-inch 120Hz VRR display, more memory than the original Steam Deck, and Valve’s handheld interface without installing the operating system themselves.

It is not automatically the best handheld for every library. Choose the Windows version for Game Pass and broad launcher compatibility, or a Steam Deck for Valve’s more mature ecosystem, trackpads, repair resources, and often better value. If you choose the SteamOS Go S, identify the exact Z1 Extreme or Z2 Go configuration first—and check your multiplayer games before purchase.
