Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, note:
- Which program or Windows feature reports the error? Does it happen with one game, during Windows startup, or when opening a network adapter’s properties?
- What is the exact message? “netshell.dll was not found,” “The specified module could not be found,” and “An unexpected error occurred” point to different troubleshooting paths.
- Did the problem begin after an update, crash, cleanup utility, malware removal, antivirus detection, or driver change?
- Is Windows 32-bit or 64-bit? Press Windows key + R, type
msinfo32, and press Enter. Check System Type. - Does the file exist in the Windows system directory? Do not download a replacement before checking and repairing Windows itself.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The safest repair is usually to restore Windows’ own protected files with DISM and System File Checker. Do not copy netshell.dll from a random DLL website.
What is netshell.dll?
netshell.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component named Network Connections Shell. It is published by Microsoft Corporation and supports Windows Network Connections features and shell integration.
The normal 64-bit Windows location is:
%SystemRoot%System32netshell.dll
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system components are handled through Windows file-system redirection. A 32-bit copy may therefore be associated with:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64netshell.dll
The directory names are counterintuitive: on 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. The correct copy depends on the architecture of the process loading it. Microsoft explains this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.

Do not use an old Windows version, a different system build, or a 32-bit copy as a substitute. Windows system files are serviced as part of the operating system, and an apparently matching filename can still have incompatible dependencies or signatures.
What the netshell.dll error means
Windows uses several loader messages for this type of failure:
| Message | What it usually indicates |
|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because netshell.dll is missing from your computer.” | Windows or an application could not find the required file in the expected search locations. |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because netshell.dll was not found.” | The program’s loader could not locate the DLL or an expected dependency. |
| “Error loading netshell.dll. The specified module could not be found.” | netshell.dll may be missing, or another DLL that it needs may be unavailable. |
| “netshell.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” | The file may be corrupt, incompatible, altered, or the wrong architecture. |
| “An unexpected error occurred” while opening network properties | Microsoft documents this as a possible damaged network-shell registration problem. |
A message naming netshell.dll does not prove that a game or application owns the file. It is a Windows component, even when an application happens to trigger the error.
Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates and restart
An incomplete update can leave Windows components or their servicing records in an inconsistent state. Start with the least invasive repair.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart Windows, even if the update process does not immediately require it.
- Try the program or network feature again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Go to Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Repeat the test that produced the error.
If Windows Update itself fails, continue with DISM. Microsoft’s Windows Update repair guidance also uses Windows component repair tools for update corruption.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
This is the primary fix when netshell.dll is missing, damaged, or accompanied by failures in several Windows networking features. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which gives SFC a healthy source from which to restore protected files. SFC then checks and repairs those protected system files.
Do not reverse the order. Run DISM first, then SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. The process can appear paused for a while.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program or network setting again.
Microsoft documents the process in its Repair a Windows Image guidance and its System File Checker documentation.

/Source:\serverc$windows /LimitAccess
The source must match the installed Windows version and build closely enough for servicing. If you do not have appropriate installation media or a matching source, Windows repair or reinstall options are safer than forcing an unrelated DLL into the system directory.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows repair issues and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, but it is not required and cannot replace reinstalling an application that has its own damaged files.
How to interpret the SFC result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”: Windows did not find corruption in the protected files it checked. Continue with the checks below.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them”: Restart and test again.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them”: Run DISM again if necessary, restart, and check the CBS log or move to a Windows repair option.
- DISM fails repeatedly: Check Windows Update, storage health, available disk space, and whether the repair source matches the installed build.
Fix 3: Use regsvr32 only for the documented network-properties problem
regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. Most DLLs do not provide the registration entry point that regsvr32 expects, and registering random system files can create additional problems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMicrosoft does document a narrow exception for netshell.dll. Use it when the exact symptom is “An unexpected error occurred” while opening the properties of a network connection.
- Close the network-properties window.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
regsvr32 %systemroot%system32netshell.dll
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Network & internet or the relevant adapter properties and test again.
Microsoft describes this specific scenario and workaround in An Unexpected Error Occurred When You Open the Properties of a Network Connection.
If the command says the module could not be loaded, or if the file is physically missing, stop using regsvr32 and return to DISM and SFC. If the command succeeds but the error remains, the problem may involve broader network registration, a damaged Windows installation, or a dependency rather than the registration of netshell.dll itself.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and file provenance
Security software can quarantine a system file after a false positive or after malware has tampered with it. Do not immediately restore a quarantined file just because its filename is familiar.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Windows Security on Windows 11, or Update & Security > Windows Security on Windows 10.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections involving
netshell.dll. - Confirm whether the detected file was located in the Windows system directory or somewhere unexpected.
Microsoft explains this area in Protection History in the Windows Security app.
If the file was detected outside %SystemRoot%System32 or %SystemRoot%SysWOW64, do not assume it is genuine. A file with the right name in a game folder, download directory, temporary folder, or unknown application directory may be unrelated to the authentic Windows component.
If you have confirmed that the detection is a false positive and the file is the genuine Windows copy, follow the security product’s restore process. Otherwise, allow the security product to remove it and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.

Fix 5: Verify the file’s location, signature, and architecture
Use File Explorer to inspect the expected location:
Recommended Free Tools
- Press Windows key + E.
- Enter
%SystemRoot%System32in the address bar. - Look for
netshell.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also consider the 32-bit system location at
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64. - Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Inspect the signer and signature status.
A legitimate Windows copy should be associated with Microsoft and should be located in a Windows system directory. The exact file version and size vary by Windows edition, architecture, servicing level, and build, so do not use a random version number or file size as a universal test.
Microsoft’s Sysinternals Sigcheck can inspect version and signature information:
sigcheck -nobanner -a -i "%SystemRoot%System32netshell.dll"
The official Sigcheck documentation explains its output.
A file can exist while the error remains. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by netshell.dll failed to load. It can also indicate that an application is trying to load a different copy from its own directory. If the error names a path, inspect that path instead of assuming the Windows copy is the one being used.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 6: Repair the affected application if only one program fails
If Windows networking works normally and only one old game or application reports netshell.dll, the application installation may be damaged or using an unsafe loading path.
First, use the program’s own repair function:
- Open the game launcher or application manager.
- Select the affected program.
- Look for Verify, Verify files, Repair, or a similar option.
- Allow the process to complete.
- Restart the application.
If there is no repair option:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Try Repair.
- If repair is unavailable or ineffective, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the official publisher or an official game launcher.
Do not place a downloaded copy of netshell.dll beside the program’s executable. That may hide the original problem, load an incompatible or modified file, or create a DLL search-order security risk. If the program is old, check its documented Windows compatibility requirements and update it through its official channel.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall network drivers when networking is also failing
A network driver does not normally provide netshell.dll, but a damaged driver or network stack can cause network-related features to fail at the same time. Use this step when the error appears with missing adapters, broken Wi-Fi or Ethernet, or Device Manager warnings.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for a warning icon, an unrecognized device, or a disabled adapter.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.

- Right-click the adapter in Device Manager.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Choose Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart and test the connection.
For a clean reinstall:
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Do not select a setting that removes the driver package unless you have a replacement driver available.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer’s official support page.
Driver hunting is especially frustrating when several network, chipset, and platform drivers are out of date. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify the stale drivers; its driver installation features require the full version, and it remains optional because the manufacturer’s official driver is the safest source.
Reset network settings if the adapter works but Windows networking is damaged
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings.
- Select Network reset.
- Click Reset now.
- Restart Windows.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings > Network & Internet > Status.
- Select Network reset.
- Click Reset now.
- Restart.
Network reset removes and reinstalls network adapters and resets related settings. It does not replace a missing system DLL, so still use DISM and SFC when netshell.dll itself is absent or corrupt.
Fix 8: Check Windows Features only when the symptom points there
netshell.dll is not supplied by a normal Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributable. Installing those runtimes is not a supported way to restore this Windows component.
Windows Features can still matter when the failure involves a specific optional Windows networking component:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review only the feature directly related to the failing function.
- If a feature is disabled but required by the application, enable it and restart Windows.
- If a feature is already enabled, do not randomly toggle unrelated features.
Do not remove or add features merely because an error names netshell.dll. Start with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a known damaging change
System Restore is useful if the problem began immediately after a driver installation, cleanup utility, software installation, or other known system change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the process.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed program changes. It does not normally remove personal documents, photos, or other personal files. Restore points may be unavailable if System Protection was disabled or no suitable point exists. Microsoft describes these choices in Recovery options in Windows.
Fix 10: Reinstall the current version of Windows
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the installation, the file remains damaged, and System Restore is unavailable, use Windows’ repair reinstall before resorting to a more destructive reset.
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Keep the computer connected to power and the internet while it completes.
Microsoft says this option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Its availability depends on the Windows installation and configuration. See Microsoft’s guide to reinstalling the current version of Windows.
If that option is unavailable, back up important data and consider Reset this PC or Windows installation media. Choose the option that preserves data only after confirming that your backup is current. Persistent corruption can also indicate failing storage, malware, or a hardware problem, so check drive health and review recent security detections.

Why you should not download netshell.dll
Do not download netshell.dll from a DLL collection site or copy one supplied by another computer. The file may be:
- Modified or malicious.
- From an incompatible Windows build.
- The wrong architecture.
- Missing required dependencies.
- Unsigned or incorrectly signed.
- Placed in a directory that changes DLL search behavior.
- Unable to repair the underlying component-store or registry problem.
The safe sources are Windows itself, Windows Update, matching Windows installation media, and Microsoft’s built-in repair tools. If an application is damaged, reinstall it from its official vendor or launcher rather than supplying it with a Windows system DLL.
FAQ
Is netshell.dll malware?
The genuine netshell.dll is a Microsoft Windows component. A file with that name outside the normal Windows directories is not automatically legitimate. Check its location, Microsoft digital signature, and provenance before allowing or restoring it.
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No, not as a first response. Those redistributables are not the normal source of netshell.dll. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC, or repair the one application that reports the error.
Does regsvr32 fix a missing netshell.dll?
Only in the narrow Microsoft-documented network-properties scenario involving “An unexpected error occurred.” It does not restore a physically missing or corrupt file and is not a general DLL repair command.
Should I copy the file from SysWOW64 to System32?
No. On 64-bit Windows, those directories serve different architectures. Copying between them can create an architecture mismatch and interfere with Windows servicing.
Why does the message say a module is missing when netshell.dll exists?
The missing module may be a dependency rather than netshell.dll itself. The application may also be loading a different copy from its own directory. Check the path named by the error, the file signature, and Windows integrity using DISM and SFC.
When should I reinstall the game or application?
Reinstall it when only one application fails, Windows networking works normally, and Windows repair tools report no corruption. Use the application’s Verify or Repair function first.
What if SFC and DISM report no problems?
Check Windows Update history, antivirus Protection History, Device Manager, the file’s digital signature, and the exact path named by the error. Then test System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall if the failure began after a known system change and continues across multiple Windows features.
Can I delete netshell.dll and let Windows recreate it?
Do not delete it manually. Use DISM and SFC to restore protected Windows files through the supported servicing system.
