Lenovo Legion Y700 (2024): 3 Reasons to Get Excited About This Gaming Tablet

The 2024 Lenovo Legion Y700 delivers flagship Android gaming performance in an 8.8-inch tablet, but Chinese firmware, no microSD slot and Wi-Fi-only connectivity complicate the buying decision.

The 2024 Lenovo Legion Y700 is exciting for a very specific reason: it puts flagship Android gaming hardware into an unusually manageable 8.8-inch tablet. With a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, a 165Hz display, dual USB-C ports, bypass charging and dedicated cooling, it is far more gaming-focused than a typical small tablet.

There are important catches. The China-market Y700 is usually Wi-Fi-only, has no microSD slot, and may involve Chinese firmware or seller-modified software. Its global counterpart is sold as the Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 3. In 2026, the 2024 model is no longer Lenovo’s newest compact gaming tablet, so it makes the most sense when its price is meaningfully below newer generations or the official global model.

What exactly is the Lenovo Legion Y700 (2024)?

“Lenovo Legion Y700 (2024)” generally refers to the third-generation Y700 launched for the Chinese market. Internationally, the closely related device is sold as the Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 3.

The identifying hardware is the combination of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, an 8.8-inch 2560×1600 display and a maximum 165Hz refresh rate. Do not confuse it with the original 2022 Y700, which used Snapdragon 870, the 2023 model with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, or later Y700 generations using newer processors.

China-market and global versions may differ in firmware, storage configuration, bundled charger, warranty and software support. Verify the exact model number and ROM before buying.

1. Flagship performance in a genuinely compact tablet

The first reason to get excited is not simply that the Y700 is fast. It is fast while remaining small enough to hold comfortably in landscape orientation.

The tablet uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile platform with a Cortex-X4 prime core, five Cortex-A720 performance cores and two Cortex-A520 efficiency cores. Lenovo pairs it with LPDDR5X memory and UFS 4.0 storage. Depending on the SKU, configurations include 12GB of RAM with 256GB of storage or 16GB with 512GB.

That hardware gives the Y700 substantial headroom for demanding Android games, remote play, cloud gaming, multitasking and emulation. It also loads games and applications faster than the budget and midrange tablets that dominate the small-tablet category.

Lenovo’s China review reported near-locked 90fps performance in Peace Elite, near-locked 120fps in Honor of Kings and close to 60fps during a 30-minute Genshin Impact test under its stated conditions. Those figures are useful examples, not guarantees for every game, graphics setting or firmware version. Performance depends on the title, frame-rate cap, thermal mode, ambient temperature and software updates.

For emulation, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Adreno GPU make the Y700 one of the most compelling compact Android devices to consider. Its screen is large enough for comfortable virtual controls and its performance provides considerable headroom for demanding systems. However, compatibility varies by emulator, game, graphics renderer, driver and configuration. It should not be treated as a guaranteed solution for every demanding console platform.

The compact form factor is the important part of the equation. A 10-to-14-inch tablet may offer more workspace, but the Y700 is easier to hold for long gaming sessions, travel, couch play and bed use. It also gives touch-heavy games more room than a phone without becoming cumbersome like a large tablet.

2. A rare 165Hz display that is actually useful for gaming

The Y700’s 8.8-inch LTPS panel has a 2560×1600 resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio and up to 165Hz refresh rate. Lenovo lists 500 nits typical brightness, up to 900 nits in high-brightness mode, 98% DCI-P3 coverage, HDR10 and Dolby Vision support, plus 10-point touch.

That specification is unusual because it combines three qualities that are rarely found together in a small tablet:

  • High resolution: games, text and video look sharp at this size.
  • High refresh rate: supported games can feel smoother and more responsive.
  • Compact dimensions: the display remains practical to hold during gaming.

The 16:10 ratio is a useful compromise for games, video and general Android use. Some titles may still show black bars or scale imperfectly, but the screen is more gaming-friendly than a narrow phone display and more manageable than a large tablet.

There is an important limitation: 165Hz is a panel capability, not a promise that every game will render at 165 frames per second. Many Android games are capped at 60, 90 or 120fps. Resolution, graphics settings, thermal limits and developer support matter just as much. Higher refresh modes can also increase power consumption, so 120Hz may be the more practical setting for some users.

HDR support is similarly dependent on the application, game, video service and content certification. The panel’s specifications are impressive, but the actual benefit varies by what you use it to play or watch.

3. It is designed around sustained gaming, not just a fast processor

Lenovo gives the Y700 several features that distinguish it from a generic Android tablet:

  • Legion ColdFront cooling to help manage heat during demanding workloads.
  • Bypass charging, which is designed to power the tablet without routing as much energy through the battery during plugged-in gaming.
  • Two USB-C ports for more flexible charging and accessory arrangements.
  • Dual X-axis vibration motors for gaming feedback.
  • Dolby Atmos stereo speakers for a fuller sound experience.
  • Gaming overlays and performance controls for adjusting supported game behavior.

Dual USB-C ports are especially useful on a landscape-oriented tablet. Depending on the regional firmware and accessory, one port can handle charging while the other connects to storage, a controller, headphones, a hub or an external display. Do not assume every dock or display mode works identically across Chinese and global versions.

  • Designed exclusively for 2025 Lenovo Legion Y700 (2025) 3rd Generation TB-321FC 8.8 inch tablet, Not compatible with any other devices.
  • Super Light: Its slim and lightweight, one-piece design doesn’t increase the tablet’s overall size. It also effectively protects the front and back of the tablet from scratches and dust.
  • Magnetic attachment: The magnetically detachable design makes it easy to watch movies and play games. It also allows for seamless switching between different functions. Additionally, the height can be adjusted in two levels to meet various usage requirements.
  • Heat-dissipating design: The hollow design of the back increases the air contact surface, enhancing heat dissipation and extending the tablet’s lifespan.
  • Support auto Sleep/ Wake function: Magnet secures the case closure, easy snap on and off. Available in a variety of bright and fun colors. Easy clip-on application. Precise cut-outs and openings for easy access to all tablet features.

Bypass charging is valuable for long sessions because gaming while charging can create additional heat and battery stress. It does not make the tablet immune to heat, nor does it turn high-performance gaming into an all-day battery experience, but it is a thoughtful feature for a device intended to remain plugged in during extended play.

The catches buyers need to understand

No microSD card slot

The 2024/third-generation hardware does not include a microSD card reader. That is a significant drawback for emulator libraries, large modern games, downloaded video and other sizeable files. Buyers who expect to carry a large library should consider the 512GB model, external USB-C storage or a different tablet with expandable storage.

No cellular connectivity

Treat the Y700 as a Wi-Fi-only tablet unless a specific SKU proves otherwise. It does not provide the convenience of a SIM or eSIM connection, so mobile use requires a phone hotspot, portable Wi-Fi device or compatible USB accessory.

Chinese firmware can change the buying experience

An imported China-market Y700 may include Chinese apps, incomplete localization, region-specific settings and different update behavior. Google Play may depend on the firmware and seller setup. Even when the Play Store is installed, Google-dependent features, DRM certification, banking apps or work applications may not behave like they do on an official global tablet.

Be particularly cautious with listings advertising a “global ROM.” A seller-installed modified ROM can create update, security, compatibility or bootloader problems. Before ordering, ask:

  1. What is the exact model number?
  2. Is the firmware genuine Lenovo China software or a seller-modified ROM?
  3. Is Google Play certified and functional?
  4. Which languages are supported?
  5. Will the device receive official OTA updates?
  6. What charger and plug are included?
  7. Who provides the warranty and return service?

Charging specifications vary by region

The platform is associated with fast charging, and some materials reference 68W support. However, Lenovo specification records list different adapter details, including a 45W maximum adapter in one record. Charging speed and the bundled charger can vary by market and SKU.

Do not assume that every imported Y700 includes a 68W charger or reaches the same maximum charging rate. Check the exact listing and consider a compatible USB-C PD/PPS charger if necessary.

  • Wi-Fi 7 + Bluetooth 5.4

It is not primarily a productivity tablet

The Y700 can browse, stream video and handle ordinary Android tasks, but its compact screen is less suited to spreadsheet work, large documents and laptop replacement use than a larger tablet. Lenovo’s specification material also indicates that a pen is not included, with accessory availability varying by region.

Lenovo’s global page lists Android 14, Google Play and three Android OS upgrades over the product’s lifetime. That support should not automatically be applied to a China-ROM import.

Who should buy it?

The 2024 Y700 is a strong choice if you:

  • Want a compact Android gaming tablet rather than a large general-purpose tablet.
  • Value high-end performance, emulation and remote play.
  • Want a larger gaming surface than a phone without handheld-PC bulk.
  • Can live without cellular connectivity and expandable storage.
  • Are comfortable checking firmware, warranty and regional compatibility.
  • Find it substantially cheaper than a newer or official global model.

It is a poor fit if you:

  • Need a microSD card slot.
  • Require guaranteed local warranty and support.
  • Want a fully localized Android experience out of the box.
  • Need mobile data without relying on a hotspot.
  • Primarily need a laptop replacement or large-screen productivity device.
  • Would pay nearly the same price as a newer generation.

How it compares with alternatives

iPad mini

The iPad mini is the safer choice for buyers prioritizing Apple’s app ecosystem, long-term platform support, accessories and general-purpose tablet polish. The Y700 is more appealing for Android emulation flexibility, a 165Hz gaming display, dual USB-C ports and Lenovo’s gaming controls. See Apple’s iPad mini page.

Gaming phones

Gaming phones are more portable and may offer cellular connectivity, shoulder controls or active-cooling accessories. The Y700 counters with a much larger screen for touch controls, emulation, streaming and remote play.

Steam Deck and ROG Ally

Steam Deck, ROG Ally and similar handheld PCs are better for native PC games and desktop storefronts. The Y700 is lighter and more tablet-like, but it is not a replacement for an x86 handheld PC. See the Steam Deck and ROG Ally product pages.

Should you still buy the 2024 Y700?

Yes—if your priority is a compact Android gaming tablet and the price reflects its age and compromises. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 remains powerful, the 8.8-inch 165Hz display is distinctive, and the cooling, bypass charging and dual-port design give it a clear identity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most international buyers, the official Legion Tab Gen 3 is the easier recommendation when its price is close to an import. It offers the same broad hardware concept through a clearer global support channel. If newer Y700 or Legion Tab generations cost only modestly more, they deserve serious consideration because the 2024 model has already been superseded.

The buying decision therefore comes down to price and tolerance for compromise. A discounted, correctly identified Y700 2024 can be an exceptional compact gaming tablet. An expensive import with uncertain firmware, fixed storage and no local warranty is much harder to justify.
