USB is the best first method because it avoids Bluetooth pairing and usually provides the most reliable connection.

- Turn on your Windows 11 PC.
- Connect the DUALSHOCK 4 to the PC with a compatible micro-USB cable.
- Wait several seconds for Windows to detect it.
- Open your game or launcher and test the controls.
Sony confirms that the DUALSHOCK 4 can connect to a Windows PC through a compatible micro-USB cable in its PC connection instructions.
If the controller charges but Windows does not detect it
The cable may be charge-only. A charge-only cable can light the controller or charge its battery without carrying controller data.
- Try another micro-USB cable known to support data transfer.
- Try a different USB port.
- Avoid an unpowered USB hub during initial testing.
- Disconnect and reconnect the controller before opening the game.
If Windows recognizes the controller but the game ignores it, the physical USB connection is probably working. Continue to the game-compatibility section below.

Connect the PS4 controller with Bluetooth
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Turn off the controller. If necessary, hold the PS button until the light switches off.
- Disconnect the USB cable.
- Hold Share + PS together until the light bar starts flashing.
- In Windows, select Add device > Bluetooth.
- Choose Wireless Controller when it appears.
- Wait for pairing to complete, then test the controller in your launcher or game.
The controller may appear as Wireless Controller, not “PS4 Controller.” Microsoft documents this pairing process in its Windows 11 controller guide. Menu labels can vary slightly between Windows 11 updates.
Use Share + PS for a DUALSHOCK 4. The newer DualSense uses a different pairing combination, so do not substitute the DualSense instructions.
Important Bluetooth limitations
A DUALSHOCK 4 can be paired with only one device at a time. If it is still connected to a PS4, turn off the console or disconnect the controller before pairing it with the PC. After using it with Windows, you may need to pair it with the PS4 again using a USB cable and pressing the PS button.

Bluetooth performance depends on the PC’s adapter, drivers, interference, and the game’s controller support. Microsoft notes that nearby USB 3.0 devices can contribute to Bluetooth problems; its Bluetooth troubleshooting guide includes additional steps.
Make the controller work in games
Test in this order: Windows detection → launcher detection → game detection. A successful Windows pairing does not guarantee that every PC game supports the controller.
Steam games: try Steam Input first
Steam Input can translate DUALSHOCK 4 controls for games that do not natively support PlayStation controllers.

- Pair the controller with Windows first.
- Open Steam and test whether Steam detects it in the controller settings.
- Enable PlayStation controller support or Steam Input if Steam recommends it.
- If one game behaves incorrectly, check that game’s individual controller layout and settings.
Steam’s labels and menu locations can change between client versions, so use the controller settings and the individual game’s properties or layout controls as they appear in your installation.
Non-Steam games: use DS4Windows only when needed
Many Windows games are designed for Xbox-style XInput controllers. If a non-Steam game ignores the DUALSHOCK 4, DS4Windows can map its input and present a virtual Xbox 360-style controller.
It is useful when:
- The game does not detect the controller.
- The game supports only XInput.
- You need button remapping or profiles.
DS4Windows is separate software, not an official Sony application. The project’s download page lists requirements including Windows 10 or newer, the Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime, Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributable, and the ViGEmBus driver. Requirements and version details can change, so use the project’s selected official download page and avoid random download portals.

Use one input-translation layer at a time. Running DS4Windows and Steam Input together can create duplicate controller entries, doubled inputs, or erratic menus. The DS4Windows guidance recommends disabling Steam’s PlayStation and Xbox configuration support when DS4Windows is handling the controller.
PlayStation PC games and Remote Play
Sony supports the DUALSHOCK 4 with compatible PlayStation PC games, although features and support vary by title.
For streaming a PS4 or PS5 to your PC, use Sony’s PS Remote Play application. Sony lists Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11 support, a USB port, at least 100 MB of storage, at least 2 GB of RAM, and a minimum recommended connection of 5 Mbps upload and download. Those requirements apply to Remote Play—not ordinary local PC gaming.
Troubleshooting by symptom

If Windows itself does not list the controller, fix the cable, USB, battery, or Bluetooth connection before changing game settings. If Windows sees it but the game does not, focus on native support, Steam Input, or XInput compatibility.

Start with a known-good micro-USB data cable. If you want wireless play, pair the controller through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth using Share + PS. Only add Steam Input or DS4Windows when the particular game needs an input-compatibility layer.
