The lgpllibs.dll error usually means a Mozilla-based application cannot find or load one of its own files. lgpllibs.dll is not a Windows system DLL, so the reliable repair is usually to restore the application that installed it rather than copy a replacement into Windows.

- Which program fails: Firefox, Thunderbird, Tor Browser, a portable browser, or another application.
- The full path shown: Common locations include
C:Program FilesMozilla Firefox,C:Program Files (x86)Mozilla Firefox, a Thunderbird directory, or a separate portable-browser folder. - When the problem began: Look for a failed update, interrupted reinstall, antivirus alert, disk cleanup, or manual move of the program folder.
- The application build: It may be 32-bit, 64-bit, ARM64, ESR, Beta, Nightly, portable, or a third-party Mozilla derivative.
The path matters. If the dialog points to Firefox, repair Firefox. If it points to Thunderbird or another directory, reinstalling Firefox may not replace the file the failing program needs.
What lgpllibs.dll is
lgpllibs.dll is a genuine application library packaged with Mozilla software. Firefox and Thunderbird include it beside their main program files in the application directory. Mozilla created the library to keep LGPL-licensed code dynamically separated; SoundTouch audio code is the documented example associated with that separation.

That does not mean you need to install SoundTouch separately. The required DLL is supplied as part of the matching Firefox, Thunderbird, or Mozilla-derived application build.
The file is not:
- A Windows component
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX file
- A .NET component
- A device driver
- A DLL that should be registered with Windows
Its architecture and contents must match the executable and other libraries installed beside it. There is no safe universal copy of lgpllibs.dll that works with every Mozilla application.
What the error actually means
Windows may display messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because lgpllibs.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because lgpllibs.dll was not found.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “lgpllibs.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages describe several possible conditions:
- The file was deleted or never installed.
- An update replaced some files but not others.
- Antivirus software quarantined or locked the file.
- The file exists but is damaged or the wrong architecture.
- A dependency needed by the DLL is missing.
“Module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. The file may be present while one of its supporting libraries cannot be loaded.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Mozilla application
This is the fastest and most likely solution, especially if the program worked until an update.
For Firefox or Thunderbird
- Close the error dialog.
- Close every Firefox or Thunderbird window.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - On the Processes tab, look for
firefox.exe,thunderbird.exe, or the process belonging to the affected application. - Select a remaining process and choose End task.
- Download the installer from the affected product’s official Mozilla download page.
- Choose the same product and release channel. Do not substitute ESR, Beta, Nightly, a portable build, or a third-party derivative unless that is what you already use.
- Match the architecture where the download offers a choice: 32-bit, 64-bit, or ARM64.
- Run the installer over the existing installation.
- If Windows asks for permission, select Yes.
For Firefox, Mozilla also provides a full offline Firefox Setup package and, where applicable, MSI installation packages. An offline installer is useful when the built-in updater is damaged or cannot complete.
For Thunderbird, use the official Thunderbird Setup package that matches the installed edition.
Check the result
Start the application normally. The repair worked if it opens without the lgpllibs.dll message and the file is present beside the program executable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReinstalling the application normally preserves the user profile, including Firefox bookmarks and Thunderbird mail settings. Do not delete the profile folder as part of this repair. The application files and user profile are separate, although you should still maintain a current backup before major changes.
If the installer reports that files are in use, restart Windows and run the installer again. If it still fails, temporarily coordinate with endpoint-security software, then run the complete offline installer as administrator.
If the error names a portable or derived browser, reinstall that exact application from its own publisher. Firefox’s installer is not automatically a repair for every program built from Mozilla code.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove, quarantine, or lock a legitimate application DLL. This is particularly relevant when the file disappears again after reinstalling.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check Windows Security
- Open Start and select Windows Security.
- Choose Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
lgpllibs.dllor the affected application. - Expand the entry and review the file path.
- If the path is the legitimate application directory and the installation came from the official publisher, use the available restore or allow option.
- If the path is unusual, do not restore it. Remove or quarantine the item and reinstall the legitimate application instead.
A file outside the expected application directory deserves additional investigation. An unfamiliar path does not prove malware, but an invalid signature, unknown executable, or repeated unexplained replacement should be treated cautiously.
After restoring a file, start the application. If the DLL is immediately quarantined again, do not keep restoring it blindly. Update the security product, scan the system, and reinstall the application after resolving the detection.
Fix 3: Correct a mixed or wrong-architecture installation
A 32-bit DLL cannot substitute for a 64-bit build, and an older DLL may not match the accompanying executable, xul.dll, or mozglue.dll.
This problem can follow:
- Copying individual files from another computer
- Combining files from release and ESR
- Switching between Beta, Nightly, and stable builds
- Moving a portable installation
- Installing a 32-bit package over a 64-bit setup, or the reverse
- Restoring only part of an application from backup
Do not replace only lgpllibs.dll. Remove the mismatch by reinstalling the complete application variant.
To inspect the installation path:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Open that folder and confirm that the DLL belongs beside the application executable.
- Use the official installer for that same product and architecture.
If the program is a managed work installation, ask the administrator which release channel and architecture are approved. A locally downloaded installer may not match the organization’s deployment.
Fix 4: Check whether a dependency is missing
If lgpllibs.dll exists in the correct folder but Windows still reports that the module cannot be loaded, another dependency may be missing.
Do not install every historical runtime package as a precaution. First confirm what the diagnostic identifies. If it specifically names a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, install the current Microsoft package matching the application architecture:
vc_redist.x86.exefor a 32-bit applicationvc_redist.x64.exefor a 64-bit applicationvc_redist.arm64.exefor an ARM64 application
Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable download page. A 64-bit Windows installation can still run a 32-bit application, so choose based on the application, not only on the Windows edition.
Restart Windows after installing the runtime and test the application. If the same lgpllibs.dll message remains, reinstall the Mozilla application rather than adding unrelated runtimes.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also malfunctioning
lgpllibs.dll is a third-party application file, so System File Checker normally does not recreate it. SFC and DISM are relevant when Windows itself has damaged components, installation failures, or broader system symptoms.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then open an elevated Command Prompt:

Restart Windows and test the application. If the commands report that they could not repair some files, save the result and continue with the Mozilla reinstall rather than assuming they will restore this DLL.
Repeatedly hunting through Windows components and rerunning SFC/DISM can be time-consuming when the real problem is an application update. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling the affected Mozilla application remains the definitive fix for this file.

If lgpllibs.dll appears in a temporary folder, a download directory, or beside an unknown executable, do not copy or run it. Check its signature without registering it:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:PathTolgpllibs.dll"
Replace the quoted path with the actual file path. Review the Status and signer information. A valid signature supports—but does not by itself prove—that the file is trustworthy.

After scanning, reinstall the legitimate application. Avoid restoring a DLL from an unknown location.
If the error returns after every Mozilla update, check whether the installation directory is writable and whether security software removes the newly installed file. An update that patches only part of the installation can leave the executable and DLL set out of sync.
Why common DLL fixes are unsafe
Do not download a random DLL
Third-party DLL download pages may provide malware, the wrong architecture, or an old file built for a different Mozilla release. Even an apparently matching file may not work with the neighboring libraries, and it leaves the original installation problem unresolved.
Do not copy lgpllibs.dll to:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Another application’s directory
Application DLLs belong beside the application that loads them. Copying one into a Windows system folder can create version conflicts and unsafe DLL search behavior.
Use the official Firefox, Thunderbird, or affected application installer instead.
Do not run regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose a COM registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. lgpllibs.dll is an application runtime library, not a COM or ActiveX component intended for registration.
Running a command such as this is not a repair:
regsvr32 lgpllibs.dll
It will typically produce an entry-point error or another message because registration is not how this library is loaded. Reinstall the application instead.
Advanced fallback: profile, drivers, and System Restore
If only one Windows user is affected, test the application with a new Mozilla profile or a new Windows user account. A profile problem is less likely than a damaged installation when Windows explicitly names lgpllibs.dll, but this test separates user configuration from application files.
Recommended Free Tools
Graphics or other drivers are not the normal cause of this specific DLL error. Update them only when the application also shows display failures, crashes, or a separate driver message:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver obtained from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Windows Device Manager may not identify every available driver update, and manually hunting through hardware models can be error-prone. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the full version performs driver installation, but a driver update is not a substitute for reinstalling the Mozilla application when lgpllibs.dll is the reported failure.
Use System Restore only when the problem clearly follows a recent system change and a suitable restore point exists:
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs and complete the wizard.
- Restart and test the application.
System Restore is a last resort and does not replace maintaining a clean, matching application installation.
FAQ
Is lgpllibs.dll a Windows file?
No. It is packaged with Firefox, Thunderbird, and some Mozilla-derived applications. It should normally remain in the installation directory.
Can I use a copy from another computer?
Only a complete reinstall of the same product, architecture, and release channel is safe. Do not substitute an individual DLL from another machine.
Will reinstalling Firefox delete my bookmarks?
A normal reinstall preserves the user profile. Do not delete profile folders unless you have separately backed up the data and have been instructed to rebuild the profile.
Should I install Visual C++ first?
No. Install it only when diagnostics identify a missing Microsoft runtime dependency. The primary repair is reinstalling the exact application.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why does the file exist but Windows still say it is missing?
A dependency may be absent, the file may be damaged, the architecture may be wrong, or related application files may come from different builds.
What if the error comes from a game or unrelated program?
Follow the full path in the error dialog. The program may bundle a Mozilla-derived runtime, so repair it using that program’s official installer rather than automatically installing Firefox.
When should I contact support?
Contact the application publisher or administrator after a clean, matching reinstall still fails, especially if antivirus repeatedly quarantines the file, the signature is invalid, or the error names a dependency you cannot identify.
