“ The program can’t start because stlport.5.0.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
Other messages include:
- “There was a problem starting stlport.5.0.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading stlport.5.0.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because stlport.5.0.dll was not found.”
- “stlport.5.0.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
stlport.5.0.dll is an old third-party C++ library from the STLport project. It is normally supplied with the application that needs it, not by Windows. The safest repair is therefore to identify that application and repair or reinstall it from its original installer or official launcher.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first matching situation:
- The error names a game or application: verify, repair, or reinstall that exact program.
- The program worked until an antivirus alert: check Protection history and confirm whether the DLL was quarantined.
- The DLL exists beside the program but still will not load: a dependent DLL may be missing or incompatible.
- The problem began after an update, cleanup, or failed uninstall: repair the program or use System Restore.
- Several Windows components are malfunctioning: run DISM and SFC, but do not expect them to download this application DLL.
- The message appears at startup with no visible program: inspect Startup Apps, scheduled tasks, and stale shortcuts.
- You are considering a DLL download,
System32, orregsvr32: stop. Those are not first-line fixes for STLport.
What stlport.5.0.dll is
STLport is an alternative implementation of the C++ Standard Template Library. Older Windows applications were compiled against particular STLport builds, so the application may require this exact library and its expected application binary interface.
It is not a Windows system component and should not normally be installed in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Applications commonly keep their private runtime files in the same folder as the executable.

Public file inventories commonly describe the encountered file as:
- Product: STLport Standard ANSI C++ Library
- Company: STLport Consulting, Inc.
- Common version:
5.0.1.0 - Common architecture: 32-bit/x86
- Approximate size: 649 KB
These are commonly reported metadata values, not a guarantee that every copy has the same version, size, or architecture. The exact copy depends on the program that supplied it.
Known associations include Webzen’s ArchLord, StrongDC, and software containing CommVault or CommCell components. This is not a complete list. The application named in the error, shortcut, or executable path is more useful than a general filename search.
Fix 1: repair the application that needs the DLL
This is the most likely solution.
Identify the affected program
- Note the application name in the error.
- If Windows shows only the DLL name, close the message and start programs one at a time until the error returns.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- Check Target to identify the executable and installation folder.
- Do not repair a similarly named program in another folder. Old software may have multiple installations.
If the program is launched by a game client, use that client’s repair or file-verification function rather than copying a DLL manually.

Verify or repair from the launcher
Look for a menu named Verify files, Scan and repair, Repair, or Check installation. Run it, allow the launcher to replace missing files, then restart Windows and test the program.
If the launcher has no repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Advanced options, where available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
For a traditional desktop application:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Right-click the application.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
If repair restores the DLL and the program starts, stop there. If repair fails, uninstall the affected program, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original installer, official launcher, or software publisher. Reinstall the same program rather than downloading an isolated stlport.5.0.dll.
Fix 2: check antivirus quarantine
A security product may have removed the DLL after an update, cleanup, or detection. That does not prove the detection was incorrect, so verify the application first.

In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected program or
stlport.5.0.dll. - Check the detected file path and detection details.
- Restore the item only if it belongs to the legitimate application and the application came from a trustworthy source.
After restoration, add an exclusion only if the publisher’s instructions require it and you understand the security tradeoff. Then run the application’s file verification or repair process.
If the detection is unclear, do not restore the file. Remove the program and reinstall it from its official source. Run a full security scan if other files have changed, the program was obtained from an untrusted location, or the error appeared with other suspicious symptoms.
Fix 3: reinstall the complete application package
A missing DLL may be only one symptom of an incomplete installation. This can happen after:
- A failed update or interrupted installation
- An incomplete uninstall
- Disk cleanup removing application files
- A damaged launcher cache
- A shortcut pointing to an older copy
- A program being moved to another drive
- A 32-bit application being mixed with files from another build
Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features. Restart Windows, then reinstall using the original installer or official launcher.
If the installer offers optional components, install the documented prerequisites. Do not mix files from different STLport releases. A program built for STLport 5.0 is not automatically compatible with a 5.1 or 5.2 library.

The commonly catalogued stlport.5.0.dll is 32-bit, but do not assume every file with this name has that architecture. A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit dependency. A random 64-bit replacement will not repair an x86 loader failure.
Check the following:
- Right-click the application executable and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and record the available product and file information.
- Check whether the application is an older 32-bit program. Many older games and desktop applications are.
- Confirm that
stlport.5.0.dll, if present, is in the application’s expected directory. - Do not move it to
System32orSysWOW64.
“Specified module could not be found” can mean that the named DLL exists but one of its own dependencies is missing. If reinstalling the complete application does not help, record any new error that appears. A message naming files such as msvcp80.dll or msvcr80.dll points to a legacy Microsoft runtime requirement, not necessarily a damaged STLport file.

Install Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages only when the application documents them or the error identifies a Microsoft runtime dependency. The current Visual C++ packages support applications built with modern Visual Studio toolsets; they are not an installer for STLport. Installing the latest package alone should not be treated as the direct fix.
DirectX is also not a replacement for STLport. Install a DirectX component only when the application specifically reports a DirectX file or the publisher lists it as a prerequisite.

Fix 5: do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. stlport.5.0.dll is a C++ runtime library, not a COM registration DLL.
Running a command such as:
regsvr32 stlport.5.0.dll
will commonly produce an entry-point or module error. It will not restore a missing application dependency. No registration command is required for this file.
Fix 6: repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows files and the Windows component store. They do not normally recreate a third-party DLL supplied by an application.
Use them when several Windows features are failing, Windows Update is damaged, or system files show broader corruption:
- Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
Success means DISM reports that the restore operation completed and SFC reports that it found no integrity violations or repaired damaged files. If the program still reports stlport.5.0.dll, return to the application repair or reinstall steps.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time while leaving the application-owned file missing. Fix 7: update or reinstall related drivers only for driver symptoms
A graphics or device driver is not a normal source of stlport.5.0.dll. Consider driver work only if the application also crashes with display, audio, device, or hardware errors.
To update through Windows:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and retest.
To reinstall a device driver:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the driver from the device or computer manufacturer if Windows does not restore it.

If the error began immediately after a cleanup operation, installation, update, or driver change:
- Press Win + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Complete the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore can reverse installed-program and system changes without removing personal files. It does not replace a proper reinstall, and it may not be available.

Do not download stlport.5.0.dll from an anonymous DLL website. A replacement may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different application build, or be incompatible with the program’s other runtime files. Even a clean file may not fix the missing dependency that caused the loader message.
Use the original application installer, an official launcher cache, a verified backup, or the software publisher’s official distribution. Copying the file into System32 or SysWOW64 can create conflicts for unrelated programs and makes future repairs harder.

Collect these details before asking the software publisher or a technician for help:
- The affected program and version
- The complete error text
- The full path to the program executable
- The folder where Windows expects
stlport.5.0.dll - Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Your Windows version and system architecture
- Antivirus Protection history
- Whether repair, verification, or reinstall completed successfully
- Any new DLL named after the first repair
If the error appears at every boot, inspect Settings > Apps > Startup and Task Manager > Startup apps. Also check scheduled tasks and shortcuts for a program that was partially removed.

Is stlport.5.0.dll legitimate?
Yes, STLport is a genuine third-party C++ library. A legitimate copy should be associated with an installed application and obtained through that application’s trusted installer. The filename alone does not prove that a particular copy is safe.
