LG opened U.S. preorders for the 45-inch UltraGear GX9, model 45GX950A-B, on March 17, 2025. It launched at $1,999 with a 5120×2160 OLED panel, 165Hz refresh rate, and a dual mode capable of 330Hz—but only at the much lower 2560×1080 resolution.

The preorder window ended on March 30, 2025. As of August 2026, the monitor is a released product rather than a new preorder, and LG’s U.S. product page has displayed it at $1,499.99, reduced from a $1,999.99 reference price. That sale price and availability can change, so check LG’s current product page before buying.

What LG actually announced

LG announced the U.S. preorder of its 45-inch UltraGear GX9 on March 17, 2025. The exact U.S. model is the 45GX950A-B, and the announced launch price was $1,999 through LG.com. LG initially accepted preorders through March 30, with sales later expanding to authorized retailers.

The announcement was notable because the monitor combines an unusually large 45-inch 21:9 OLED screen with a 5120×2160 resolution—commonly called 5K2K. LG described it as the world’s first OLED gaming monitor with that resolution, based on its internal comparison of published specifications as of March 2025. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified universal ranking.

Most importantly for current buyers, this is not an active 2025 preorder story anymore. The 45GX950A-B has launched and should be evaluated using its current price, availability, and alternatives.

Why 5K2K matters on a 45-inch ultrawide

The monitor’s 5120×2160 resolution gives it the same 2,160-pixel vertical height as a 4K UHD display while adding substantially more horizontal workspace. Compared with a conventional 3440×1440 ultrawide, it provides more detail in both directions.

  • 3440×1440 ultrawide: 4.95 million pixels.
  • 3840×2160 4K UHD: 8.29 million pixels.
  • 5120×2160 5K2K: 11.06 million pixels.

That extra width is useful for keeping a game, chat window, browser, or productivity application visible at the same time. It also makes the 45-inch format considerably sharper than earlier 45-inch OLED ultrawides that used 3440×1440. LG lists the 45GX950A-B at approximately 125 pixels per inch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

However, 125 PPI is not the same as the density of a 32-inch 4K monitor. The GX9 is sharper than older large-format OLED ultrawides, but buyers who spend all day reading small text may still notice color fringing or softer edges compared with denser displays.

LG’s advertised 0.03ms figure is a stated GtG specification. It should not be read as a guarantee that every pixel transition measures exactly 0.03ms in every operating condition.

165Hz at 5K2K or 330Hz at 1080p?

The dual-mode feature gives the 45GX950A-B two distinct roles:

  1. 5120×2160 at 165Hz: the mode for maximum detail, workspace, and immersive single-player gaming.
  2. 2560×1080 at 330Hz: the mode for reducing rendering demand and prioritizing very high refresh rates in competitive games.

The 330Hz setting is not available at 5120×2160. It significantly lowers the resolution, so it is better understood as a flexible second mode rather than a way to combine 5K2K detail with 330Hz motion.

LG 45GS95QE Ultragear OLED Curved Gaming Monitor 45-Inch WQHD 800R 240Hz 0.03ms DisplayHDR True Black 400 AMD FreeSync Premium Pro NVIDIA G-Sync HDMI 2.1 DisplayPort Tilt/Height/Swivel Stand - Black
  • 45” Display, 21:9 Aspect Ratio - With a huge 45” display, 21:9 aspect ratio and a dramatic curved OLED screen, you’ll feel like you’re actually in the game. Experience next-level gaming performance with LG UltraGear OLED.
  • 12% Larger Screen - Size matters in OLED gaming. A 45" 21:9 screen is 12% larger than a 49" 32:9 display.
  • MLA plus 275 nits - Micro Lens Array produces bright OLED gaming at 275 nits (typical) brightness.
  • 800R Curved Screen - This UltraGear OLED monitor's dramatic and steep 800R curve draws you in with game play by extending the periphery to feel like you're surround by the action.
  • 240Hz Refresh Rate/0.03 Response Time - Gear up for smooth gameplay with an ultra-fast 240Hz OLED display. The faster speed lets you respond quickly to opponents and stay a step ahead of the competition. Plus, enjoy smoother scenes with less lag or ghosting thanks to LG UltraGear OLED's nearly instantaneous 0.03ms (GtG) response time.

LG also lists narrower dual-mode configurations, including 16:9 viewing areas equivalent to approximately 37-, 27-, or 24-inch displays. These options are selected through the monitor’s on-screen display and can be useful when a game does not suit the full 21:9 canvas.

Gaming performance and hardware requirements

OLED remains a strong fit for gaming because it offers per-pixel blacks, very high contrast, wide viewing angles, and fast pixel response. The 800R curve further emphasizes the edges of the screen, making the monitor particularly compelling for sim racing, flight simulation, racing games, first-person games, and cinematic RPGs.

The trade-off is GPU demand. Rendering modern games at 5120×2160 can be considerably more demanding than rendering at 4K, especially with high settings and ray tracing. A powerful current-generation graphics card is advisable for demanding AAA games. Esports titles are more likely to take advantage of high frame rates, particularly in the 330Hz mode, but actual performance depends on the game, GPU, settings, and upscaling technology.

DisplayPort 2.1 is the preferred PC connection for the monitor’s high-resolution, high-refresh modes. HDMI 2.1 is useful for compatible hardware, but console resolution and refresh-rate support must be checked separately rather than assumed from the port specification.

DisplayPort black-screen issue on some RTX 50-series systems

LG warns that NVIDIA RTX 50-series users should install display driver 576.26 or newer. NVIDIA released that hotfix on April 28, 2025, to address DisplayPort 2.1 black-screen problems.

If a compatible system still produces a black screen, LG lists temporary workarounds including switching the monitor to DisplayPort 1.4 in the monitor menu or selecting 8-bit color output in NVIDIA Control Panel. These steps reduce the link’s capabilities, so they are troubleshooting measures rather than ideal permanent configurations.

Is a 45-inch, 800R screen practical?

The size is a major part of the GX9’s appeal, but it also imposes real desk requirements. A 45-inch 21:9 monitor occupies considerable width and depth, and an 800R curve is far more aggressive than the curve used on many conventional displays.

Before buying, check:

  • Desk width and depth, including room behind the stand or monitor arm.
  • Stand clearance and whether the desk can support the monitor securely.
  • Viewing distance: sitting too close can make the curve and peripheral movement tiring.
  • VESA-arm weight capacity if you plan to replace the stand.
  • Whether windows, spreadsheets, and design layouts will look comfortable on a strongly curved panel.

The geometry is excellent when the monitor is positioned as an immersive gaming cockpit. It is less universally comfortable for straight-line design work, large spreadsheets, or workflows that depend on a flat reference surface.

Text clarity and productivity

The 45GX950A-B is a meaningful improvement over 45-inch 3440×1440 OLED monitors. Its higher pixel density produces sharper text and more usable desktop space, and the revised OLED structure addresses some of the clarity and color-fringing concerns associated with earlier large OLED ultrawides.

It still should not be treated as equivalent to a high-PPI 4K 32-inch display. Independent testing and comparisons continue to identify the newer 39-inch GX9 as sharper, thanks in part to its higher pixel density. Buyers who read dense text for many hours should compare the 45GX950A-B with a 32-inch 4K OLED, a 39-inch 5K2K OLED, or a high-PPI 5K2K LCD.

If text appears soft or fringed, check operating-system scaling, chroma and output settings, the selected connection mode, and viewing distance. If clarity remains distracting, a denser display may be a better choice than trying to tune around the panel’s physical pixel density.

OLED advantages and compromises

The GX9’s OLED panel can produce excellent black levels and strong contrast in dark scenes. But VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification does not describe every aspect of HDR performance. Peak brightness in a small highlight is different from sustained full-screen brightness, and independent reviews have identified full-screen brightness, price, and burn-in as meaningful limitations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bright rooms can reduce the perceived impact of OLED blacks, while large bright scenes may look less intense than they would on a powerful LCD or Mini LED monitor. That matters for users who play or work in a sunlit room.

Burn-in and image retention also remain relevant considerations. Static taskbars, application chrome, spreadsheets, and game HUDs can place more stress on an OLED panel than varied full-screen content. The monitor includes OLED-care and protection features, but they reduce risk rather than guaranteeing that burn-in cannot occur.

For longer-term care:

  • Keep the monitor’s OLED protection features enabled.
  • Use automatic screen sleep rather than leaving a static desktop displayed.
  • Hide or automatically minimize taskbars where practical.
  • Vary static desktop layouts and avoid leaving bright fixed windows open for extended periods.
  • Check the exact warranty and burn-in terms for your country and retailer.

Do not assume that burn-in coverage is universal. Warranty language varies by region and purchase channel.

45GX950A-B versus the newer 39GX950B-B

LG’s GX9 branding now covers two different monitors. The 2025 model is the 45GX950A-B. The newer 2026 model is the 39GX950B-B, a 39-inch UltraGear evo GX9.

Main distinction Larger, more immersive panel Smaller footprint and higher pixel density

LG announced U.S. preorders for the 39GX950B-B on April 7, 2026. Independent comparison coverage describes it as smaller, newer, and sharper, while both models retain the core 5K2K and dual-mode 330Hz concept. Do not order based only on the GX9 name: confirm the full model number.

Should you buy the LG 45GX950A-B?

Buy it if

  • You want the largest possible 5K2K OLED ultrawide.
  • You prioritize immersive gaming, simulation, and cinematic games.
  • You want one screen to replace a multi-monitor gaming setup.
  • Your PC has enough graphics performance for 5120×2160 gaming.
  • Your desk can accommodate a large 800R display.
  • The current price is close to the $1,500 level observed on LG’s U.S. site in August 2026.

Choose the 39GX950B-B if

  • You want a smaller physical footprint.
  • Text sharpness and pixel density matter more than maximum screen size.
  • You prefer the newer GX9 generation.
  • You are willing to pay a premium over a discounted 45-inch model.

LG announced the 39-inch model at $1,799.99 for U.S. preorders, but current availability and pricing should be checked separately.

Choose another type of monitor if

  • You work with static windows for most of the day and want minimal burn-in anxiety.
  • Full-screen brightness matters more than perfect OLED blacks.
  • You need a flat panel or a more conventional productivity layout.
  • Your GPU cannot comfortably handle 5120×2160.
  • You want a smaller high-PPI OLED or a 4K 16:9 screen for general desktop and console use.

Verdict

The LG 45GX950A-B is most compelling as a large, immersive gaming display that also provides substantially more desktop detail than older 45-inch 3440×1440 OLED monitors. Its headline combination—5K2K at 165Hz, with a separate 330Hz-at-2560×1080 mode—is genuinely unusual.

It is not equally ideal for every buyer. The 800R curve, large footprint, OLED care requirements, limited full-screen brightness, and merely good rather than class-leading pixel density make it a specialized premium monitor. At a current price near $1,500, it becomes a stronger value than it was at launch. Buyers who prioritize sharper text and a smaller desk footprint should instead investigate the newer 39GX950B-B, while bright-room and static-work users may be better served by an LCD or Mini LED alternative.
