libcairo-script-interpreter-2.dll is missing when a Windows application cannot load part of the Cairo graphics runtime. The correct repair is usually to restore the application that installed libcairo-script-interpreter-2.dll, not to copy a random DLL into a Windows folder.
Before changing anything, note:
- Which program or game shows the error
- Whether it fails during launch, loading, printing or opening a document
- Whether the problem began after an update, cleanup, antivirus action, migration or partial uninstall
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the message says the file is missing, cannot be loaded, is damaged or is the wrong type
- Whether
libcairo-2.dll, GLib, Pango, Pixman or another related file is also mentioned
Cairo is an open-source 2D graphics library commonly bundled with GTK and MinGW applications. Its Windows packages can include libcairo-2.dll, libcairo-gobject-2.dll and libcairo-script-interpreter-2.dll together. The file is not a Windows system component and is not supplied by the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.

1. Repair the application that shows the error
This is the fastest and most reliable fix because the application installer knows which Cairo build, architecture and supporting DLLs belong together.
Use the program’s repair option
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and launch the program again.
Some applications provide the repair function in their own launcher instead:

- Open the application launcher.
- Open its settings or manage-installation menu.
- Choose Verify files, Repair, Scan and repair or an equivalent option.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the application from its normal shortcut.
A successful repair restores the complete private runtime directory, not just the named file. If the error changes to a different missing Cairo, GLib, Pango or Pixman DLL, the original installation is still incomplete.
Reinstall from the official installer
If no repair option exists:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer or publisher’s official website.
- Install the same 32-bit or 64-bit edition that matches the program.
- Start the application once before restoring custom plugins or modifications.
Do not assume that installing the newest Cairo build is safe. Older GTK and MinGW applications can require a particular runtime layout, and a DLL from another build may have incompatible dependencies.
The filename can appear in software built with GTK or MinGW, including some QEMU Windows packages, GIS and database tools, Python graphics environments, and developer-built applications. That does not identify which program owns it. The executable that displays the error is the important clue.

Windows Security or another antivirus product may quarantine a file during an update or after an application directory changes. Do not disable antivirus protection globally.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event naming
libcairo-script-interpreter-2.dllor the affected application. - Open the event to review its location and action.
- Restore or allow the file only if the installer came from the genuine application publisher and the file belongs in that application’s directory.
- Reinstall or repair the application afterward if the file was damaged or partially removed.
If you restore a quarantined file and the application still fails, run a scan against the original installer and verify its publisher before allowing anything else. A replacement from an unknown source may be malware, may have the wrong architecture or may simply be unable to load its own dependencies.
3. Confirm the file belongs to the right application directory
For an ordinary desktop program, Windows normally searches the application directory before other locations. A private GTK or MinGW application may therefore keep Cairo DLLs beside its executable or inside a private bin directory.
To inspect the location:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for the program’s executable and related files.
If the directory contains some Cairo files but not libcairo-script-interpreter-2.dll, the runtime is probably incomplete. If the named file is present but the program still fails, another dependency may be missing or the file may be incompatible.

Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64 or a random directory on PATH. That can create a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch, cause one program to load another application’s runtime, and increase DLL-preloading risk.
Copying a DLL beside an application is appropriate only when the application’s own official package explicitly uses private DLL deployment. It is not a general repair method.
4. Match the application’s architecture
A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit Cairo dependency set, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit libcairo-script-interpreter-2.dll cannot repair a 32-bit program.
To identify the application architecture, check its documentation or installer options. You can also inspect the application in a trusted system-information utility or ask the publisher which build you have installed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Then:
- Uninstall the affected application.
- Download the matching x86 or x64 installer from its official publisher.
- Install it without mixing files from another installation.
- Launch the program again.
If the application comes from MSYS2, use the matching environment and package family. Mixing mingw32, mingw64, UCRT64 or Clang64 packages can produce loader failures even when the filename appears correct. Reinstall the complete matching Cairo package and its dependencies through the same environment rather than copying files between environments.
5. Check for a missing dependency
“DLL not found” does not always mean the named file is absent. Windows may show the same type of message when libcairo-script-interpreter-2.dll exists but one of its dependencies cannot load.
Related runtime files can include:
- Another Cairo DLL
- GLib
- Pango
- Pixman
- FreeType
- Fontconfig
- libpng
- zlib
The practical fix is to repair or reinstall the complete application runtime. Do not try to assemble this list manually from unrelated downloads.
If the application has a diagnostic launcher, enable its logging and check the application’s own log directory. Event Viewer can also provide context:
Recommended Free Tools
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Record the application name, faulting module and exception code.
If the file is present but Windows reports “not designed to run on Windows,” an error such as 0xc000012f, or an entry-point failure, treat the binary as damaged, incompatible or mismatched. Reinstall the owning application instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
6. Do not install Visual C++ as the first fix
The Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable provides Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries such as VCRUNTIME and MSVCP. It does not directly provide Cairo.
Install or repair the Visual C++ package only if the application separately reports a missing Microsoft runtime file. The architecture must match the application, not merely the operating system. Microsoft provides official x86, x64 and ARM64 packages and documents their compatibility.

- Launch the application again.
If the error still names libcairo-script-interpreter-2.dll, return to the application repair or reinstall step.
7. Use Windows integrity repair only for wider system problems
Cairo is a third-party application library, so System File Checker normally will not restore it. DISM and SFC become appropriate when several Windows components or unrelated applications are failing, or when Windows itself was damaged.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows resources. Neither command should be expected to supply a private Cairo DLL for a third-party application.
If manually hunting through repair results and repeating DISM or SFC leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; repairs are completed by the full version, while reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for its private Cairo runtime.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →8. Update Windows, drivers and the application
A graphics driver usually does not own this DLL, but an application may begin failing after a driver, Windows or application update changes its runtime environment.
Install pending Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
For a display-driver problem, use the hardware manufacturer’s official installer or Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If the failure began immediately after a driver update, open Properties for the adapter, select the Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver when available. Do not use a driver update as a substitute for repairing the application that supplied Cairo.
If checking each hardware component and matching driver package manually is taking too long, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the available updates; the full version performs the driver installation, but it is not a replacement for reinstalling the application’s own runtime.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches9. Avoid regsvr32 for this Cairo DLL
Do not run:
regsvr32 libcairo-script-interpreter-2.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points, commonly COM or ActiveX components. A Cairo runtime DLL normally is not a self-registering component, so registration will usually fail or accomplish nothing.
Use regsvr32 only when the software publisher explicitly identifies a DLL as a COM or ActiveX component and provides registration instructions. That is not the normal repair path for Cairo.
10. Test whether the problem is profile-specific
If the application works for another Windows user, the installation may be intact while the original profile has a damaged path, cache or per-user component.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
- Select Add account.
- Create or use another local test account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Launch the application.
If it works there, reinstall the application’s per-user components or repair the original profile rather than replacing system DLLs. If it fails for every user, prioritize the application installation, architecture and dependency set.
Frequently asked questions
Is libcairo-script-interpreter-2.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is part of Cairo, an application graphics library commonly bundled with GTK or MinGW software.
Can I download the DLL by itself?
That is unsafe and often ineffective. A random copy can contain malware, target the wrong architecture, require incompatible dependencies or fail to match the application. Use the affected program’s official installer or its official runtime package.
Should I put it in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. The correct location is normally the affected application’s directory or its private runtime directory.
Will installing Visual C++ fix it?
Not directly. Visual C++ supplies Microsoft runtime libraries, while this filename belongs to Cairo. Install Visual C++ only when the application separately reports a missing Microsoft runtime file.
What if the DLL is already present?
The file may be damaged, the wrong architecture, or unable to load another dependency. Repair the complete application runtime and inspect the application log or Event Viewer.
What information is needed if none of this works?
Record the exact application name, executable path, Windows edition, application architecture, complete error text, error code and whether the DLL is present beside the executable. Also note any related missing files and recent antivirus, update or cleanup actions. That information identifies the correct runtime without guessing at a universal DLL version.
