The 60-second answer
agkernel.dll is not a normal Windows system file. The strongest available evidence associates it with Adobe applications, especially Lightroom and Lightroom Classic, although the same filename has also been associated with other Adobe software.

Do not download a replacement from a DLL website or copy it into System32. First identify the Adobe program named in the error, then repair or reinstall that exact application through the Adobe Creative Cloud desktop app. This restores the correct file, version, architecture, and dependent files together.
Why agkernel.dll is missing or fails to load
The most likely causes are:
- An incomplete, damaged, or mismatched Adobe installation.
- An Adobe update or reinstall that did not finish correctly.
- Antivirus software quarantined or removed the file.
- The file exists, but a Microsoft Visual C++ dependency is missing.
- A 32-bit and 64-bit Adobe installation has been mixed.
- Windows components are damaged.
- The file belongs to another program and is being mistaken for Adobe’s copy.
A missing-file message does not always mean that agkernel.dll itself is absent. Windows can show “the specified module could not be found” when a dependency required by the DLL cannot load.

Fix 1: Identify the Adobe application first
Before changing files, record which program is failing.
- Read the complete error dialog. Note any executable name, such as
Lightroom Classic.exe. - Check the shortcut:
- Right-click the Adobe shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- If the program opens briefly, press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager and check the failing process. - Open Event Viewer:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time the Adobe program failed.
Write down the product name, installed version if shown, Windows version, exact message, and executable path. If the dialog does not identify Adobe, do not assume that every copy of agkernel.dll belongs to Adobe.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected Adobe application
This is the most reliable fix when Lightroom or Lightroom Classic is named.
Recommended Free Tools
Try an update first
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop app.
- Select Apps.
- Open Updates or All Apps.
- Find the affected Adobe application.
- Select Update if an update is available.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If the application is already current or will not update, reinstall it.
Reinstall Lightroom Classic or the named Adobe app
- Open Creative Cloud.
- Select Apps > All Apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the More actions menu, usually shown as three dots.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow Adobe’s prompts. Keep personal settings or preferences only if the installer offers that choice and you need them.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Creative Cloud again.
- Select Install for the same application.
- Start the program and check whether the error has disappeared.
Do not copy agkernel.dll from another Adobe folder. Different Adobe products, release generations, and architectures may contain incompatible builds. Reinstalling the owning application is the definitive repair.
If you use Lightroom Classic, back up catalogs, presets, plug-ins, and other important user data before removing the application. Reinstalling the program should not be treated as a substitute for backing up those files.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if the Adobe application starts without the DLL dialog and its normal features load. You can also use the shortcut’s Properties window to confirm that it points to the intended Adobe installation.
If the same message returns immediately, continue with the checks below rather than downloading a loose DLL.
Fix 3: Check the Adobe installation path and architecture
agkernel.dll should normally be beside the Adobe executable or in an Adobe application subdirectory. Exact paths vary by product and installation choice.
To inspect the path:
- Right-click the Adobe shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Select Open File Location.
- Search that folder and its Adobe subfolders for
AgKernel.dll.
If the file is absent, reinstall the application through Creative Cloud.
If the file is present but the error remains:
- Do not replace it with a file from another computer.
- Do not move it to
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Check whether the file is in a different Adobe installation than the executable that is failing.
- Reinstall the exact product instead of mixing Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, Character Animator, or older Adobe files.
A 32-bit application cannot use an arbitrary 64-bit replacement, and a 64-bit file from one Adobe build may not work with another build. Current Lightroom Classic requirements are centered on 64-bit-capable systems, but older Adobe products can differ.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an application DLL.
Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
AgKernel.dll, the Adobe installation folder, or the affected executable. - Read the detection details before taking action.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error. Restore it only when it is clearly inside the genuine Adobe installation and the installation is trusted. If there is any doubt, reinstall the Adobe application instead.
If your antivirus has its own quarantine, inspect that product’s history as well. After reinstalling, update the security software and run a scan. If it repeatedly removes the file, submit the detection to the security vendor rather than downloading a replacement.
Fix 5: Repair Microsoft Visual C++ dependencies
A DLL can be present while failing because one of its runtime files is damaged or missing. Public metadata for one AgKernel.dll sample reports Microsoft C++ runtime imports, and Adobe crash reports also show Microsoft runtime modules in Lightroom processes. This does not prove that every Adobe build uses exactly the same dependencies.
Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable page and install the architecture that matches the failing application:

- Install x86 for a 32-bit Adobe application.
- Install x64 for a 64-bit Adobe application.
- Older Adobe releases may require an older Visual C++ generation as well.
After installing or repairing the runtime:
- Restart Windows.
- Open Creative Cloud.
- Launch the Adobe application again.
Installing x64 alone does not repair a 32-bit application. If the error continues, return to Fix 2 and reinstall Adobe so its application files and dependencies are restored as one set.

Use these commands when several unrelated programs fail, Windows reports broader corruption, or the Visual C++ installer itself behaves incorrectly. These tools repair Windows components; they do not normally recreate a private Adobe DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Adobe again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If either command reports that it could not repair everything, restart and run the commands again. If only Adobe fails, reinstalling Adobe remains the more likely solution.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRepeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds; its full version performs the repair, but it is not required and cannot replace reinstalling the Adobe application that owns the DLL.
Fix 7: Update Windows and relevant drivers
Windows updates can repair operating-system components and compatibility problems.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
A graphics driver can affect Lightroom startup, but a driver update will not normally recreate agkernel.dll. If the Adobe application fails only when using a particular display or GPU feature, update that driver through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Manually checking hardware pages and matching driver versions can take time. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the relevant update; installation through its full version is optional, and updating a driver does not replace the definitive Adobe reinstall.

Why regsvr32 AgKernel.dll is usually wrong
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 AgKernel.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. There is no reliable evidence that AgKernel.dll is a self-registering COM DLL.
The command may produce an error saying that the module loaded but the entry point was not found. Even if registration succeeded, it would not restore a missing dependency, correct a damaged Adobe installation, or make an incompatible DLL work.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading agkernel.dll from an unofficial DLL site can give you:
- Malware or a tampered file.
- The wrong Adobe release.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- A file with incompatible dependencies.
- A replacement that creates DLL search-order or hijacking risks.
Windows normally searches the application directory and other defined locations. Putting an arbitrary copy in a system directory can make troubleshooting harder and affect other software. Use Creative Cloud for Adobe files and Microsoft’s official pages for Windows and Visual C++ components.

Is agkernel.dll part of Windows?
No reliable evidence shows that it ships as a Windows component. It is an application DLL associated most strongly with Adobe software.
Which Adobe program uses it?
Evidence points especially to Lightroom and Lightroom Classic. Independent metadata has also associated the filename with Adobe Character Animator. Identify the executable and installation path instead of relying on the filename alone.
What if agkernel.dll exists but Windows still says it is missing?
A dependent runtime may be missing. Repair the matching Visual C++ Redistributable, then reinstall the affected Adobe application if the error continues.
Should I put the file in System32?
No. A private Adobe DLL should normally remain in the Adobe application directory. Reinstall the owning application to obtain the correct copy.
Can I use System Restore?
Only as a fallback when the problem began after a known system change and reinstalling Adobe is unavailable. It is not a substitute for obtaining the correct Adobe files.
What should I provide when asking for further help?
Include the exact error text, executable name, Adobe product and version, Windows version, full file path, antivirus quarantine details, and any relevant Application Error entry from Event Viewer.
