libpad.dll is usually a game component, not a Windows system file, so the safest fix is to repair the game or runtime that installed it. First check whether the error actually names libScePad.dll, because that newer PlayStation PC SDK file is not interchangeable with libpad.dll.
What this file actually does
libpad.dll is associated with a Windows program or game that uses Sony controller or PlayStation-related functionality. Public file records describe a 64-bit file called “libpad for Windows” and attribute it to Sony Computer Entertainment, but there is limited official public documentation for the standalone short-name file.
Many newer Sony PC games instead report a missing libScePad.dll. This file is part of the PlayStation PC SDK Runtime and is used for features such as controller support, PlayStation integration and related game services. The filename, version and architecture can vary between game releases.
The PlayStation PC SDK Runtime is normally installed separately from the main game under:

Do not treat either filename as a generic Windows DLL. The correct copy should come from the game’s own installation package or the game publisher’s official installer.

Fix 1: Reinstall the PlayStation PC SDK Runtime
This is the primary fix for current PlayStation PC game errors, especially when the message says:
The libScePad runtime is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
You may also see:
The PlayStation(R) PC SDK Runtime cannot start because it is missing from your computer.
Remove the existing runtime
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for PlayStation PC SDK Runtime.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal and restart Windows.
If the runtime is not listed, continue to the game folder. The installation may simply be incomplete.
Run the installer supplied with the game
For Steam:
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Manage.
- Choose Browse local files.
For Epic Games Store:
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Open Library.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the game.
- Choose Manage.
- Select the option to open the installation folder.
Look for one or more of these files:
PsPcSdkRuntimeInstaller.msi
PsPcSdkRuntimeManager.msi
install_pspc_sdk_runtime.bat
Run PsPcSdkRuntimeInstaller.msi. If the game includes the manager or batch file, run that as well when the installer instructions or game documentation indicate it is part of the setup.
If Windows requests administrator approval, select Yes. Restart Windows after the installation finishes and launch the game again.
Check the result
The repair worked if:
- The game starts without the DLL message.
- The SDK runtime appears under Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Controller detection and PlayStation-specific features work normally.
- The error does not return after another restart.
If the installer says that an older version is already installed, uninstall PlayStation PC SDK Runtime first and then run the copy in the current game folder. If the installer still fails, proceed with file verification.
Fix 2: Verify the game files
A game update, interrupted installation or drive migration can leave the executable present while omitting its runtime package.

Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish.
- Run
PsPcSdkRuntimeInstaller.msiagain from the game folder if it is present. - Restart Windows and test the game.
Verification can restore missing or damaged game files. Some configuration files may legitimately fail verification, so a small number of reported differences does not automatically indicate a failed repair.

Epic Games Store
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the game.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for the process to complete.
- Open the installation folder and rerun the bundled PlayStation SDK installer if necessary.
If verification completes successfully but the same error remains, uninstall and reinstall the SDK runtime separately rather than reinstalling the entire game immediately.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Windows Defender or another security product may quarantine a runtime file after a game update. This is especially relevant if libpad.dll or libScePad.dll was present previously and then disappeared.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an item whose path points to the affected game folder or the PlayStation SDK directory.
- Expand the detection and review its name, location and action.
- Restore or allow the file only if you can confirm that it came from the legitimate game installation and has a valid digital signature.
- Rescan the game folder.
- Verify the game files and rerun the SDK installer.
Do not permanently exclude the entire game directory just to suppress the warning. If antivirus repeatedly removes the file, leave the detection active, reinstall the runtime from the game’s official package and contact the game publisher with the detection details.
Fix 4: Confirm the filename and architecture
Read the error carefully. These names are different:

libScePad.dll
A copy of one cannot safely be renamed to substitute for the other. The modern PlayStation PC SDK evidence available publicly identifies libScePad.dll as an x64 component with Sony Interactive Entertainment metadata. That does not prove that every game release uses the same version or that a supported 32-bit copy exists.
To check the game executable:
- Open the game’s installation folder.
- Right-click the main
.exefile. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Review the available product information.
Windows does not always display a simple 32-bit or 64-bit label in this dialog. If architecture remains unclear, use the game publisher’s support information rather than downloading a DLL advertised as a different bitness.

Also check whether the expected SDK directory exists:
C:ProgramDataSony Interactive Entertainment IncPSPC_SDK
If the directory is absent, reinstall the bundled runtime. If it exists but the game still fails, check permissions, antivirus logs and the installer result.
Fix 5: Repair a missing dependent runtime
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load it because another dependency is missing.
Only install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable when the game publisher requires it or the error identifies a Visual C++ runtime dependency. Use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ packages, matching the game’s architecture where required. Installing random runtime packs from third-party download pages is not a safe substitute.
After installing the required Microsoft package:
- Restart Windows.
- Verify the game files.
- Run the bundled PlayStation SDK installer again.
- Launch the game without changing the DLL filename.
Do not assume that Visual C++ Redistributable, Windows Update or a general runtime package directly fixes every libpad.dll report.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands only when other Windows applications also show damaged-system-file symptoms, or when the problem began after a broader system failure. They do not provide a missing Sony game DLL.

- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the game’s SDK installer and launch the game.
Success means DISM and SFC complete without an unrepaired corruption message. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run the commands again only if Microsoft’s results indicate that is appropriate. If the game alone is affected, return to the game installer instead of repeatedly running system repair.

Repeatedly hunting through DISM and SFC output can be tedious when the real issue is a missing game prerequisite. Driver updates are relevant when the game launches but loses DualSense support, fails to detect a controller or reports a PlayStation component error after a hardware change. They are less likely to restore a genuinely missing DLL.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices, Bluetooth, Sound, video and game controllers and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected controller or device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the device has a warning icon:
- Right-click it.
- Select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Use Uninstall device only when you are prepared to reconnect the hardware and let Windows reinstall it.
- Restart and reconnect the controller.
Obtain specialized controller or chipset drivers from the hardware manufacturer or the game publisher’s official support channel. Do not expect Device Manager to repair the PlayStation SDK itself.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change
If the error began immediately after a driver installation, security change, system update or other software installation, System Restore may reverse that change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore affects installed programs, drivers, settings and system files, but not personal files. Afterward, verify the game files and reinstall its SDK runtime if the error remains.
What not to do
Do not download libpad.dll or libScePad.dll from random DLL websites. A downloaded file may contain malware, have the wrong version or architecture, be unsigned, lack its dependencies or conceal the original installation problem.

Do not use registry cleaners. They do not reinstall a missing game runtime.

Do not run regsvr32 as a routine DLL repair. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A normal game or SDK runtime DLL generally is not repaired by registering it. Use it only when the software publisher specifically instructs you to do so.
Windows Features are also not a normal source for this file. Enabling legacy features such as .NET Framework or DirectPlay will not recreate a missing PlayStation SDK component unless the game’s own requirements explicitly identify that feature.
If the error still appears
Collect these details before contacting the game publisher or launcher support:
- The exact error text and whether it names
libpad.dllorlibScePad.dll - The game and its installed version
- Steam or Epic Games Store
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 build
- Whether the problem began after an update, reinstall or drive move
- The result of file verification
- Whether PlayStation PC SDK Runtime appears in Installed apps
- The contents of the game folder related to the SDK installer
- Any Windows Security detection and action
- The SDK installer log or error message
If verification succeeds but the runtime installer fails, check free disk space, permissions on C:ProgramData, security software logs and disk errors. Do not replace the file manually.
FAQ
Is libpad.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with the application or game that installed it. Windows component repair cannot be used as a direct download source for it.
Is libpad.dll the same as libScePad.dll?
No. They are different filenames. Current PlayStation PC SDK errors commonly name libScePad.dll, while public records for the shorter libpad.dll are less well documented.

Should I register the DLL with regsvr32?
Usually not. Game runtime DLLs generally do not expose the registration entry point that regsvr32 requires.
Why does the error say the specified module is missing when the file is present?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the named DLL. Reinstall the game’s runtime, check antivirus actions and install a Visual C++ package only when the game identifies that dependency.
Can I fix this by copying the file from another computer?
That is unsafe. The other computer may have a different game release, architecture, dependency set or altered file. Reinstall the runtime from the affected game’s own package instead.
What if the game launches despite the warning?
Test the controller, overlay and other PlayStation features. A partial launch can still indicate an incomplete SDK installation, so reinstall the runtime if functionality is missing.
