The file appears to be a language or resource component. Public historical metadata records sldres.dll as its original filename, but the exact function and release matrix are not documented well enough to assume that every SOLIDWORKS version uses the same build.
Do not treat sldresu.dll as a file that belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Its correct location depends on the SOLIDWORKS version, language package, installation path, and architecture installed on your computer.

Identify the installation before repairing it
Before changing files, record the SOLIDWORKS installation that Windows is trying to use.
| Check | What to record |
|---|---|
| Product | SOLIDWORKS and any related products |
| Major release | The SOLIDWORKS year or release shown in Programs and Features |
| Service pack | The installed service pack, if displayed |
| Language | The language folder named in the error |
| Installation path | The full path shown in the error |
| Architecture | Whether the installed release is 32-bit or 64-bit |
Historical file catalogs show more than one sldresu.dll build and architecture. Those records are identifiers, not compatibility guidance. A file from another SOLIDWORKS year, language, or architecture may be rejected by the application or create a different loader error.
Typical messages include:
The program can't start because sldresu.dll is missing from your computer.
sldresu.dll was not found.
Error loading sldresu.dll.
An Explorer-related message may look like this:
C:WindowsExplorer.exe failed to load: ...sldresu.dll
That does not prove that Explorer owns the file. A SOLIDWORKS shell extension, preview handler, file association, or background component can be loaded while File Explorer is running. Explorer may therefore be the process reporting the failure even though SOLIDWORKS is the application that installed the DLL.
Fix 1: Repair SOLIDWORKS with Installation Manager
Repair is the safest and most likely solution because it restores the matching files and registrations from the original SOLIDWORKS installation source.
- Save your work and close SOLIDWORKS.
- Close SOLIDWORKS-related background processes if they remain open.
- Press
Windowsand search for Control Panel. - Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Find the installed SOLIDWORKS release.
- Right-click it and select Change.
- Wait for SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager to open.
- Select Repair your installation.
- Select only the affected SOLIDWORKS product unless you know another installed component is damaged.
- Leave the correct language and installation location selected.
- Click Repair and allow the process to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Start SOLIDWORKS and test the operation that produced the error.
A successful repair normally allows SOLIDWORKS to start without the missing-file message. If File Explorer was freezing or displaying the error, open a few SOLIDWORKS files after the restart and check whether the Explorer message returns.
Repair may require the original installation files and the service packs applied to that installation. If Installation Manager asks for source files that are no longer available, do not copy a replacement DLL from another computer. Continue with the matching installation media instead.
Fix 2: Reinstall the exact SOLIDWORKS release
Use a reinstall when repair is unavailable, repeatedly fails, or reports that the installation source is incomplete.
- Open Control Panel → Programs and Features.
- Select the installed SOLIDWORKS release.
- Choose Uninstall or Change, depending on the options shown.
- If SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager offers a modification or repair path, try repair first.
- If removal is necessary, record the current release, service pack, language, and installation location before uninstalling.
- Restart Windows after removal.
- Obtain installation media from the official SOLIDWORKS Downloads portal or your authorized SOLIDWORKS reseller/customer portal.
- Select the same major release and service pack whenever possible.
- Run the installer from a local folder.
- Right-click
setup.exeand choose Run as administrator. - Select the required products and language.
- Use the intended installation path.
- Complete setup and restart Windows.
- Start SOLIDWORKS and confirm that the error is gone.
Do not mix a newer sldresu.dll with an older SOLIDWORKS installation. Do not install a 32-bit file into a 64-bit application directory, or the reverse. The replacement must come from the same product package expected by the installed release.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and file security
Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate application component after an installation, update, or scan.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
sldresu.dllor the SOLIDWORKS installation folder. - Do not restore the file automatically.
- First verify that the event points to the expected SOLIDWORKS directory and that the file belongs to the installation you recognize.
- If your organization manages antivirus software, ask the administrator to verify the detection.
- If the file is confirmed as legitimate, restore it according to your security policy.
- Add an application exclusion only if your IT policy permits it and the installation is trusted.
- Run SOLIDWORKS again.
If the file was removed from an unexpected directory, or the signer and location do not match the legitimate installation, leave it quarantined. Run a full security scan and repair SOLIDWORKS from official installation media rather than restoring an untrusted file.
Fix 4: Verify the path, permissions, and architecture
A file can exist but still fail to load when an old shortcut, registry entry, service pack, or permissions setting points SOLIDWORKS to the wrong location.
- Right-click the SOLIDWORKS shortcut and choose Properties.
- Check the Target and Start in fields.
- Confirm that they point to the installed SOLIDWORKS directory rather than an old uninstalled release.
- Browse to the language folder named in the error.
- Check whether
sldresu.dllexists there. - Right-click the file, select Properties, and review the Digital Signatures tab if one is available.
- Compare the directory with the installation path recorded in Programs and Features.
- If the file exists but the path is wrong, repair SOLIDWORKS instead of editing random registry entries.
- If access is denied, sign in with an administrator account or ask your administrator to check folder permissions.
- Confirm that the installation media matches the installed SOLIDWORKS architecture and language.
A file that exists in the correct directory but still produces a load error may have a damaged dependency, incompatible service pack, licensing problem, permissions issue, or application crash. The filename in the message is not always the true root cause.

Fix 5: Run Windows integrity checks
Windows repair tools do not normally restore a third-party SOLIDWORKS DLL. They are useful when the machine also has damaged Windows components or several unrelated applications are failing.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- In the same administrator Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test SOLIDWORKS again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. If both commands complete successfully but sldresu.dll remains missing, return to SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager. Repeating SFC and DISM will not recreate a SOLIDWORKS installation component that was never restored.
If manually hunting through repair commands and logs is taking longer than expected, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; its free scan shows the problems, while repair is handled by the full version. Reinstalling SOLIDWORKS remains the definitive fix when this specific file is absent from its application folder.
Fix 6: Check drivers only when the symptoms point to them
A driver update is not a normal fix for a missing SOLIDWORKS resource file. Consider this step only when the error began alongside display problems, graphics crashes, docking-station changes, or other hardware-related failures.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
- Use Windows Update, the computer manufacturer, or the graphics manufacturer to obtain a compatible driver.
- Install the driver and restart Windows.
- Test SOLIDWORKS again.
Do not use Device Manager to replace sldresu.dll; Device Manager manages hardware drivers, not SOLIDWORKS application files.

If checking numerous driver versions manually is becoming guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. This remains secondary to repairing the exact SOLIDWORKS release that owns sldresu.dll.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
A separately downloaded DLL may contain malware, belong to a different SOLIDWORKS release, use another language, or have the wrong architecture. It also may not include the dependent files or installation registrations that SOLIDWORKS needs.
Use SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager, official SOLIDWORKS installation media, or your authorized reseller/customer portal instead.

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are not a universal destination for application DLLs. Copying sldresu.dll there can hide the original installation problem and create path or architecture conflicts.
Do not run regsvr32 as a routine repair
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that sldresu.dll should be manually registered. Running commands such as these can produce misleading errors:
regsvr32 sldresu.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32sldresu.dll
Use the SOLIDWORKS installer to restore its files and registrations.
Do not use registry cleaners
Registry cleaners do not supply the correct SOLIDWORKS component and can remove entries required by other applications. Repair the owning installation instead.
If the file exists but SOLIDWORKS still crashes
A missing-file error and a crash report are different problems.
If sldresu.dll exists in the expected SOLIDWORKS language folder, check the exact wording:

- Wireless freedom - 3Dconnexion 2.4GHz wireless technology ensures a reliable, real-time connection to your 3D content.
- One month of battery life - space Mouse wireless will operate for up to a Month between charges
- Stylish design - small footprint, elegant brushed steel base, two programmable buttons.
- 2-Year manufacturer's warranty
- “is missing” or “was not found” usually indicates an absent file, wrong path, quarantine event, or incomplete installation.
- “could not be loaded” can indicate a dependency, permission, architecture, or service-pack mismatch.
- “faulting module: sldresu.dll” may identify only the module where a crash was recorded. It does not prove that the file is missing or defective.
After a failed repair, preserve the SOLIDWORKS installation logs and record the release, service pack, language, full error text, and installation path. Check Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application for the matching crash time. If security software, licensing, or a shell extension is involved, contact your IT administrator or SOLIDWORKS reseller/support channel.
System Restore is a last resort when the failure began immediately after a known system change and the correct installation source is unavailable. It is not a substitute for repairing the SOLIDWORKS installation.

Is sldresu.dll a Windows file?
No verified evidence identifies it as a Windows system DLL. It is associated with the SOLIDWORKS application and should normally remain inside the SOLIDWORKS installation directory.
Where should sldresu.dll be located?
A documented example places it under the SOLIDWORKS language directory, such as:
C:Program FilesSolidWorks CorpSolidWorkslangenglish
Your actual path may differ because of the installed release, language, architecture, or custom installation location.
Can I copy it from another PC?
Only if an administrator has a verified copy from the exact official installation media and has confirmed the same release, service pack, language, and architecture. Repairing or reinstalling SOLIDWORKS is safer.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I repair Windows first?
No. Repair SOLIDWORKS first when this is the only affected application. Run DISM and SFC when Windows itself also shows corruption or multiple unrelated programs fail.
Why does Explorer appear in the error?
Explorer can load SOLIDWORKS shell integrations while displaying files. It may report a component failure even though SOLIDWORKS installed the DLL.
What is the correct fix after quarantine?
Verify the path and legitimacy of the file, follow your security policy to restore it if appropriate, then repair SOLIDWORKS so the complete matching component set is present.
