The safest way to patch a Linux VPS is a repeatable cycle: identify the release and exposed services, confirm supported official repositories, create a restorable snapshot or backup, refresh package metadata, install security updates in a controlled window, inspect the results, and reboot when the running kernel or another low-level component requires it. For a game server, this process closes vulnerabilities without treating automatic updates as a substitute for testing, health checks, or recovery access.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Debian and Ubuntu can automate narrowly scoped security updates with unattended-upgrades; RHEL-family systems provide dnf-automatic. Kernel live patching can reduce some reboot downtime, but it does not install ordinary APT updates and does not cover every kernel, firmware, microcode, or userspace-library change.

Why patching a game-server VPS is an availability and security task
A VPS usually combines an internet-facing operating system with services such as SSH, a web control panel, a database, monitoring agents, and one or more game-server processes. A vulnerable package can therefore expose player accounts, administration interfaces, world files, or the host itself. Delaying a fix also increases the chance that a later update will contain several changes that are harder to test together.
Patching is not simply running one command. Package installation can restart a daemon, replace a shared library, alter a configuration file, fill a small disk, or install a new kernel that is inactive until reboot. A reliable process makes those effects visible and gives you a way back if the VPS does not return cleanly.

Start with an inventory and a support check
Record the operating system, release, and kernel
Log in through a tested administrative account and record the distribution and release before changing anything:
cat /etc/os-releaseshows the distribution, version, and codename on most modern systems.uname -rrecords the kernel currently running.dpkg --audit(Debian or Ubuntu) can reveal interrupted package work. On an RHEL-family host, inspect recent transaction history withdnf history.
Also list the services that must remain available to players. systemctl --type=service --state=running gives a starting point; document the game process, proxy, database, backup agent, monitoring, and any control panel separately. Note listening sockets with ss -tulpn so an unexpected service is not mistaken for a game component.

Confirm the release is still supported
Use the distribution’s lifecycle documentation for the exact release and repository components. Debian’s production guidance recommends the stable suite with security updates. Ubuntu supplies backported security fixes during a release’s support window. Canonical’s 2026 server-security documentation states that standard Ubuntu LTS Main and Restricted packages receive five years of security maintenance; Ubuntu Pro extends that period to ten years. An end-of-life release is not made safe by repeatedly running the package manager: migrate to a supported release or obtain a documented extended-maintenance path.
Check repository provenance
Updates should come from official, signed repositories appropriate to the release. Review configured sources before installing:
- On Debian and Ubuntu, inspect files under
/etc/apt/sources.listand/etc/apt/sources.list.d/. - On RHEL-family systems, inspect enabled repositories with
dnf repolist.
Disable abandoned third-party repositories or verify that they publish packages for the exact release. A repository that is unreachable, unsigned, or built for a different release can block all updates or introduce an untested dependency. Do not broaden an automatic security policy merely to make one third-party package update itself.
Prepare a maintenance window and a recovery path
Create a restorable backup or snapshot
Verify that the VPS provider offers a snapshot, serial console, or rescue environment, and confirm how to use it before patching. A snapshot is useful only if it is complete, recent, and restorable; it is not a substitute for an application-level backup of game worlds, databases, configuration, and license files. Record where the backup is stored and when it was taken.

For a busy game server, announce a maintenance window, stop or drain player sessions cleanly, and capture the current application state. Keep enough disk space for package downloads, unpacking, logs, and a possible snapshot operation. If the provider has a separate snapshot charge or retention limit, account for it in the runbook rather than discovering it during an outage.
Capture a baseline
Before changing packages, record:
- Current uptime, load, memory, and filesystem usage with
uptime,free -h, anddf -h. - Service state with
systemctl --failedand the status of each game-related unit. - Application health, such as a local status endpoint, a login test, or a player connection from a test account.
- Relevant logs and the current listening ports.
This baseline distinguishes a pre-existing fault from a patch-related regression and gives you a concrete post-maintenance comparison.
The repeatable patch runbook
- Identify the host. Record distribution, codename, kernel, exposed services, package-manager state, and the recovery method.
- Validate support and repositories. Confirm the release is supported, official signed sources are enabled, and third-party sources are intentional.
- Protect data and availability. Verify a restorable backup or snapshot, save game data, notify users, and record the baseline health checks.
- Refresh metadata. On Debian or Ubuntu run
sudo apt update. On an RHEL-family host refresh DNF metadata using the distribution’s documented DNF workflow. - Review what will change. Read the proposed package list and note kernel, database, networking, runtime, or configuration packages. If a transaction removes a critical package or introduces an unexpected repository, stop and investigate.
- Install updates in the window. Debian and Ubuntu administrators can use
sudo apt upgradefor normal upgrades orsudo apt full-upgradewhen dependency changes require it. Useunattended-upgradesonly after its origins and scope have been reviewed. On RHEL-family systems, configurednf-automaticwith the documenteddefaultorsecurityupgrade type. - Read the transaction output. Look for held packages, configuration-file prompts, removals, failed post-install scripts, and messages saying that a restart is required. Do not close the session until the package manager exits successfully.
- Check services and the application. Run
systemctl --failed, inspect service status, repeat disk and memory checks, verify listening ports, and perform the same game-server health test used for the baseline. - Decide on a restart. Restart individual services when a userspace library or daemon changed. Schedule a full reboot when the running kernel, firmware, microcode, or another low-level dependency requires it. Confirm console access first.
- Verify after reboot. Check
uname -r, failed units, logs, network reachability, authentication, backups, and a real player connection. Keep the maintenance window open until these checks pass. - Record the result. Save the date, package transaction, advisory or CVE references, reboot result, health checks, and any rollback action.
Debian and Ubuntu: package updates and unattended security fixes
Manual APT maintenance
APT separates metadata refresh from installation. Run sudo apt update first so the host sees current repository indexes. Then review and apply changes with sudo apt upgrade. A normal upgrade avoids removing installed packages; sudo apt full-upgrade may make dependency changes and should be reserved for a reviewed maintenance window. If APT reports interrupted configuration, finish it with the package manager’s prompted recovery before attempting another upgrade.
Do not assume that a successful command means every update is active. A new kernel can be installed while the old kernel continues running, and a daemon may retain an old shared library until it is restarted. Treat the package output, service state, and reboot decision as separate checks.
What unattended-upgrades does
Debian documents unattended-upgrades as a program that can download and install security upgrades automatically from configured APT sources while handling package configuration prompts. Its default scope is security updates, and the origins are configurable in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades. Ubuntu Server installations from Ubuntu 18.04 LTS include it, with security updates applied daily by default while ordinary updates are delayed by the default policy.
Review the policy instead of editing a vendor file directly. On Ubuntu, place local overrides in a higher-numbered drop-in under /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/. Confirm that only intended origins are allowed, especially if the VPS has a game panel or other third-party repository. Security-only automation is a narrow control: it does not test your game server, approve a kernel reboot, or guarantee that an application is compatible with a changed library.

Where to inspect the evidence
After an automatic run, inspect:
/var/log/unattended-upgrades/unattended-upgrades.logfor the unattended transaction./var/log/unattended-upgrades/unattended-upgrades-dpkg.logfor lower-level package operations.- APT history and package-manager output for held packages, removals, and configuration changes.
systemctl --failed, service-specific logs, and the game application’s own log.
If no updates were installed, determine whether the host is current, the origin policy excluded available fixes, a repository failed, or a package is held. Do not respond by enabling every repository automatically.
RHEL-family VPSs: using dnf-automatic safely
RHEL-family distributions use DNF rather than APT. Red Hat’s RHEL 8 administration guidance documents dnf-automatic and its upgrade_type values. The security type limits the transaction to updates carrying security metadata; default permits the broader documented automatic-upgrade policy.
Install and configure the package according to the exact distribution documentation, then choose a maintenance schedule that leaves time for verification. Treat the service timer, repository credentials, exclusions, and logs as configuration that belongs in your change record. A security-only DNF policy still needs testing, monitoring, application checks, and a planned reboot path.
Do you need to reboot after a kernel update?
When a reboot is normally required
Reboot when the host must start a newly installed kernel, when firmware or microcode changes require initialization during boot, or when a low-level dependency cannot be safely reloaded in place. A reboot may also be the cleanest way to ensure that processes using replaced shared libraries are no longer running old code. A service restart is sufficient only when the changed component and the service’s restart behavior make that safe.
What live patching can and cannot do
Canonical describes Livepatch as covering selected high and critical kernel vulnerabilities without an immediate reboot. Coverage depends on the specific kernel vulnerability and supported system. Livepatch does not patch userspace libraries such as OpenSSL or glibc, and enabling it does not turn on automatic installation of security updates in APT. Normal package updates and systems-management tooling remain necessary.

Detecting a pending reboot
Distribution mechanisms vary, so use the indicator provided by your release when available and confirm it against package output. On Debian or Ubuntu, a file such as /var/run/reboot-required may be created after certain updates; its presence is a signal to investigate, not permission to reboot blindly. Correlate it with the installed kernel, service restarts, maintenance notices, and your availability plan.
How to verify that patching worked
Host-level checks
- Run the package manager’s consistency or history view and confirm the transaction completed without errors.
- Check for failed units with
systemctl --failedand inspect journal entries from the maintenance period. - Confirm sufficient free space with
df -h; full filesystems can prevent services from writing state or logs. - Verify expected listening sockets with
ss -tulpnand confirm firewall behavior. - After a reboot, compare
uname -rwith the newly installed kernel and verify uptime.
Game-service checks
Use an application-level test rather than relying on a green systemd status. Confirm that the process accepts a connection, authentication works, the expected world or save data is present, and a test action can be completed. Check latency and logs for errors that appeared only after the update. If a proxy, database, voice service, or web map is part of the player path, test each dependency.
Keep an audit trail
Record the patch date, host, release, packages or advisories installed, kernel before and after, whether services were restarted, whether a reboot occurred, and the result of the health checks. Include the backup or snapshot identifier and any rollback decision. This turns the next maintenance window into a known procedure instead of a reconstruction exercise.

| Approach | Coverage | Availability impact | Control and verification |

Debian or Ubuntu unattended-upgrades |

RHEL-family dnf-automatic |
Documented security or default upgrade type |
Automatic package changes do not remove the need for a planned restart | Requires repository, timer, log, testing, and maintenance-window controls |
| Kernel live patching | Selected high and critical kernel vulnerabilities only | Can reduce immediate kernel-reboot downtime when coverage applies | Does not replace APT updates and does not cover userspace libraries, every kernel change, firmware, or microcode |
For a small, noncritical VPS, daily security automation plus a scheduled review may be adequate. A server with many players, mods, databases, or strict uptime needs staged approval: test on a disposable or less busy instance, patch during a declared window, and keep console recovery available. Debian’s reference guidance places responsibility on the administrator to test mission-critical updates under safe conditions.
Common failures and recovery decisions
The package manager reports a locked or interrupted transaction
Do not delete lock files while another package process is running. Identify the active process, wait for it to finish if appropriate, and use the distribution’s documented package-recovery procedure to complete configuration. Re-run the package manager only after its status is consistent.
A repository error blocks updates
Read the exact source that failed. Correct a supported official source or disable an obsolete third-party entry, then refresh metadata again. Do not bypass signature checks or force packages from a different release simply to obtain a clean command exit.

A service fails after patching
Check systemctl status service-name and the journal for the first failure, then compare configuration files and dependency versions with the baseline. Restore the service from the verified backup or snapshot only when diagnosis cannot be completed safely in place. Document the rollback and keep the affected update out of automatic scope until a tested fix is available.

Use the provider’s serial console or rescue environment, inspect boot and filesystem errors, and confirm whether the new kernel or a configuration change is responsible. Boot a known-good kernel if the bootloader offers one, restore the snapshot when necessary, and repeat the patch in a controlled test. Never remove the only recovery path while troubleshooting a remote host.
Players report lag although services are running
Check CPU, memory, disk latency, network errors, and application logs rather than assuming the update is harmless. A package transaction can leave a service technically active but misconfigured or competing for resources. Compare the post-patch metrics with the baseline and roll back only after preserving logs and evidence.
How often should a VPS be patched?
Apply security updates as soon as your testing and maintenance process allows, using daily automation where its repository scope is narrow and monitored. Set a separate recurring window for broader package updates, kernel reboots, and lifecycle upgrades. The exact calendar should reflect player activity, release support, backup retention, and how quickly you can recover through the provider console.
Review lifecycle status at every maintenance cycle. Debian stable with security updates is the production baseline recommended by Debian guidance. Ubuntu LTS support for Main and Restricted packages is five years under the standard offering and ten years with Ubuntu Pro, according to Canonical’s 2026 documentation. Plan an operating-system upgrade before that window closes; patching an unsupported release is not a durable security strategy.
