This keeps player warnings separate from process management, so a failed webhook cannot prevent the server from restarting.

What an automatic DayZ restart system must do
A restart is more than stopping and starting the executable. A production setup must coordinate four jobs:

- Warn players in-game. DayZ’s mission message system can display a countdown and announce the upcoming restart.
- Stop DayZ gracefully. The configured shutdown deadline lets the server finish its shutdown path instead of being killed by the operating system.
- Relaunch the process. Windows Task Scheduler, a Linux cron-and-shell arrangement, a supervisor, or a hosted management service must start DayZ after it exits.
- Report state externally. Discord notifications are a separate integration. They can be sent by a script, a bot, or a management platform.
Keep those responsibilities independent. If Discord is unavailable, the DayZ process should still stop and relaunch. If an update fails, the supervisor should log the failure and avoid an endless crash-and-restart loop. If the server exits unexpectedly, the same supervisor should be able to recover it without waiting for the next calendar trigger.
Choose the restart authority
Decide which component owns the schedule before editing files. Do not run two independent schedulers against the same instance; overlapping stop and start commands can corrupt persistence or launch duplicate server processes.

For a single privately administered server, a local wrapper gives the clearest failure behavior and the most control. A hosted scheduler is attractive when you do not want to maintain a machine-level service, but verify that it can issue a graceful DayZ stop, not merely terminate the process.
Configure DayZ’s graceful countdown in messages.xml
The mission’s db/messages.xml file controls the in-game announcements. The exact directory is inside the mission used by your instance, so preserve the structure already installed by your server and edit that file rather than creating a second copy.

The shutdown flag is ignored unless countdown behavior is enabled. Messages are limited to 160 characters, so put the important information first: the event, the remaining time, and where players can reconnect. Bohemia’s documentation strongly recommends this graceful method because it reduces negative effects on player characters and on server-storage saving.
Use the attribute names in the documented schema already present in your file. A representative message entry has this shape (the surrounding elements, value formats, and deadline units must match your installed DayZ version):

Reconnect after the server returns.</message>Treat that snippet as an illustration of the required properties, not as a replacement for your mission’s complete XML. Make a copy before editing, keep the file valid XML, and restart the instance once after a change so you can confirm that the message appears and that the shutdown actually occurs at the deadline.

Design useful warning text
- Use a short first warning far enough ahead for players to leave combat and move valuable gear.
- Repeat at useful intervals rather than flooding chat every minute.
- Include
#tminin the text so the displayed time tracks the countdown. - Keep each message under 160 characters; long server rules or links belong in Discord, not in the countdown.
- State that the server will be temporarily unavailable and that players should reconnect only after it returns.
Make the relaunch layer reliable
The external layer should launch one DayZ process, observe it, and perform post-exit work before starting the next instance. A sensible sequence is:
- Acquire a lock or otherwise confirm that no other instance of the wrapper is running.
- Start DayZ with the same profile, configuration, mission, and mod parameters used for normal operation.
- Wait for a clean exit. A normal exit should be the result of the
messages.xmldeadline or a management command, not an immediate forced kill. - Back up the persistence directory and relevant configuration files.
- Optionally update the server and mods, recording the exact version or build outcome in a log.
- Start DayZ again and send a recovery or startup notification.
Backups must occur after the process has stopped and before an update replaces files. Keep more than one generation of persistence backups and store them outside the live directory. The precise persistence path varies with your profile and hosting layout; identify the directory that contains your character, vehicle, and world databases rather than assuming a universal path.
Use a maximum restart rate. For example, if DayZ exits three times in a few minutes, stop relaunching and send an urgent Discord alert. A bad mod, invalid parameter, or incomplete update should not become an infinite restart loop that obscures the original error.
Send DayZ events to Discord with a webhook
In Discord, open the target server’s Server Settings, choose Integrations, open Webhooks, create a webhook, select the notification channel, and copy its URL. Treat that URL like a password: anyone who obtains it can post to the channel. Store it in an environment variable or a protected service configuration, not in a public script repository.

- Warning: the countdown has begun and the expected downtime.
- Shutdown: the process has exited and maintenance is in progress.
- Started: the executable has been launched.
- Recovered: the server has passed your health check and is accepting connections.
- Failure: an update, backup, launch, or health check failed.

Discord delivery must be non-blocking from the server’s perspective: retry a notification a limited number of times, then continue the shutdown or launch path. Windows: Task Scheduler with a PowerShell supervisor
Prepare the service account and folders
Run the server under a dedicated Windows account with only the file and network permissions it needs. Create separate directories for the live server, backups, and logs. Grant the account access to the DayZ executable, profile directory, mission files, and backup destination.

Create the supervisor
The following pattern illustrates the important behavior: send a Discord event, start DayZ, wait for exit, back up persistence, and relaunch. Replace the paths and arguments with the ones already used by your instance. Keep the webhook URL in the DAYZ_DISCORD_WEBHOOK environment variable rather than hard-coding it.

}This is a supervisor pattern, not a universal launch command. Add your normal DayZ parameters, profile location, mod list, and any update step. Use a robust backup method for your actual persistence directory; the example copies a profile tree only to show where that operation belongs.
Register it in Task Scheduler
- Open Task Scheduler and choose Create Task, not the limited basic wizard.
- On General, select the dedicated account, choose Run whether user is logged on or not, and enable elevated privileges only if your installation requires them.
- On Triggers, add At startup. If you use a separate scheduled restart trigger, set one repeating trigger and disable any older task that targets the same instance.
- On Actions, choose Start a program. Set the program to
powershell.exeand the arguments to-NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File "D:DayZServersupervisor.ps1". - On Conditions, clear power-saving restrictions that would stop a dedicated server unexpectedly.
- On Settings, enable Restart the task if it fails, set a sensible delay, and prevent a second instance from starting while one is already running.
- Run the task manually once, inspect the supervisor log, confirm the Discord startup message, and then stop it through the configured graceful path.
Task Scheduler starts the supervisor; it does not itself make DayZ’s shutdown graceful. The countdown and shutdown behavior still comes from messages.xml or from a management command that invokes the same graceful path.
Linux: cron and a shell wrapper
On Linux, run the server under a dedicated account and use an absolute working directory. A wrapper started at boot can supervise the process continuously, while a separate, single cron trigger can request the planned maintenance event through your chosen DayZ management method.

The example uses WEBHOOK_URL_SERVER, a convention also used by DayZ automation projects for server-restart notifications. Keep a separate variable for mod-update notices if you want maintenance and content changes to appear in different Discord channels.
A cron entry should be narrow and unambiguous. For example, a daily entry that invokes your documented graceful-restart command at 04:00 is preferable to several overlapping entries. Do not use kill -9 as the normal restart mechanism; it bypasses the saving behavior that the graceful countdown is intended to protect. If your hosting layer exposes only a service stop command, verify whether that command maps to a graceful DayZ shutdown before putting it in cron.
Using BattleMetrics Scheduler instead of local scripts

- Basic schedules run fixed messages or commands at intervals.
- Warning schedules are intended to alert players before an event, including a planned restart.
- Advanced schedules support custom timing.
Its documentation gives notifying players that a server is going to restart as a common use. Its webhook triggers can forward server events to Discord, so you can use the hosted scheduler for timing and notification while retaining a local or host-provided mechanism for process recovery.
Before relying on a hosted schedule, confirm four details in the current control panel: whether it can request a graceful DayZ shutdown, whether it starts the process after shutdown, how it behaves when the server is already offline, and what retry or rate-limit rules apply to webhooks. A hosted warning alone does not replace a relaunch supervisor. If the service cannot recover a failed process, keep a local watchdog or host-level service enabled.

Pick a fixed maintenance window in the server’s advertised time zone and keep it consistent. A restart every few hours may be appropriate for a busy public server, while a less frequent window reduces disruption for a small community. The technical schedule should leave enough time for the longest warning, the shutdown, backups, updates, and startup health checks.

Separate routine restarts from update-driven restarts. A routine cycle should not download or replace files unless you explicitly enable that step. For an update cycle:
- Announce the maintenance window in Discord and in-game.
- Allow the configured countdown to reach zero.
- Verify that the DayZ process has exited.
- Back up persistence and configuration.
- Apply the server or mod update.
- Abort the launch if the update command returns an error.
- Start the previous known-good build when your rollback procedure supports it, or leave the server stopped and alert an administrator.
- Send a recovery message only after the process and a connectivity check succeed.
Test the failure paths before trusting automation
Run these checks during a maintenance window with an administrator present:
- Normal cycle: players see each warning, the countdown reaches zero, the process exits, and the supervisor starts one new instance.
- Persistence: a test character, vehicle, and storage change survive the restart.
- Discord outage: block or remove the webhook temporarily; DayZ still shuts down and returns online while the log records the notification failure.
- Bad update: make the update step return an error; the wrapper stops rather than relaunching a broken installation repeatedly.
- Unexpected exit: close the process in a controlled test and verify the watchdog’s retry limit and alert.
- Duplicate prevention: attempt to start the scheduled task twice and confirm that only one DayZ process owns the instance files.
- Reboot recovery: reboot the host and confirm that the supervisor starts once, with the correct account, working directory, permissions, and environment variables.
Troubleshooting common failures
Players never see the countdown
Check that you edited the mission actually loaded by this instance, that the XML remains valid, and that the message is under 160 characters. Confirm countdown is enabled; the shutdown flag alone is ignored. Check the deadline and repeat values against the format documented for your DayZ version.
The server stops but does not return
Run the wrapper manually and inspect its log. Common causes are a wrong executable path, a missing working directory, a service account without access to the profile, or a task configured to run only while an administrator is logged in. Verify that the supervisor waits for the real DayZ process and is not watching a short-lived launcher.
Discord messages fail
Regenerate a leaked webhook, verify the environment variable contains the complete URL, and test an HTTPS POST from the same host. Check the HTTP response and Discord channel permissions. A rejected webhook should be logged and ignored by the restart path.
The server restarts continuously
Inspect the first DayZ exit code and the server log before increasing retry counts. Disable automatic updates temporarily, check recent mod or configuration changes, and enforce a maximum number of attempts. Continuous relaunching is a failure condition, not a successful recovery.
Operational checklist
- One clearly designated restart authority.
- A documented graceful countdown in
messages.xml. - A supervisor that starts exactly one DayZ process and has a retry limit.
- Backups made after shutdown and before updates.
- Discord webhook stored as a secret and handled with a timeout.
- Separate logs for DayZ, the supervisor, updates, and webhook failures.
- Recovery tested after normal shutdown, host reboot, failed update, missing webhook, and unexpected process exit.
- A written rollback path and an administrator alert when automation pauses.
With this separation of concerns, DayZ supplies the player-facing countdown and safe shutdown, while the operating system or management service supplies scheduling and relaunch. Discord then becomes an informative notification channel rather than a dependency that can take the game server down.
