A Linux VPS is a remote Linux virtual machine that you administer over SSH. The safest beginner sequence is: provision a supported image, connect with an SSH key, create a named sudo user, update the operating system, allow SSH before enabling a firewall, then add monitoring, backups and a tested recovery procedure before installing applications.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
That order matters because a VPS is usually self-managed. Your provider supplies the virtual machine and control-panel features, but you remain responsible for accounts, updates, firewall rules, service health and data recovery unless you have purchased a managed service.

A virtual private server (VPS) is a Linux virtual machine running on a provider’s physical infrastructure. You receive a virtual CPU, memory, storage and network interface, plus a public or private network address. You normally control it from your own computer with Secure Shell (SSH), rather than through a desktop interface.
The provider may offer selectable operating-system images, regions, web-console access, virtual firewalls, private networking, IPv6, monitoring, backups and snapshots. Those features do not automatically create a secure server. On a customer-managed instance, you still decide who can log in, which packages are installed, which ports are reachable, when updates run and how a failed machine is restored.

Managed and self-managed responsibilities
A managed plan can move some operating-system and security work to the provider, but the exact boundary differs by company and plan. On a self-managed cloud server, Hetzner explicitly places updates, firewalls, user management and security with the customer. Treat the same responsibilities as yours unless your contract says otherwise.
Why the basics matter for game and application hosting
Applications fail for ordinary administrative reasons: a service stopped, a full filesystem, exhausted memory, an expired certificate, a blocked port or an account that cannot read its files. Learning the underlying Linux controls lets you diagnose those conditions instead of repeatedly rebuilding the VPS. For a game server, open only the game’s documented port after the service is installed, keep save data in a known location and watch disk and memory usage.
Plan the server before you create it
Write down the choices you are making in the provider dashboard. This small record becomes valuable when you need support or recovery.
- Image: choose a currently supported Linux distribution and record its release or image version. Debian and Ubuntu use APT; Fedora, AlmaLinux and related systems use DNF or a compatible package manager.
- Region: select a location appropriate for your users. Network distance and available regions affect latency and may affect data-residency requirements.
- Access: add your public SSH key if the provider supports it. Record the server IP address and the provider’s browser console or rescue method before you need it.
- Network controls: note whether filtering is supplied by a provider firewall, the operating system, or both. Record IPv4, IPv6 and private-network settings.
- Recovery features: check whether backups and snapshots are enabled, how long they are retained and how a restore is started. A snapshot is not useful if you do not know how to create a replacement server from it.
- Costs: include recurring compute, storage, public or additional IP addresses, backup storage and bandwidth charges. A low base price can be misleading when these items are separate.
First login: use keys and preserve a second access path
SSH keys provide a stronger and more manageable login method than a shared password. Create the key on your own computer, not on the VPS, and protect the private half.
- Create or select an Ed25519 key locally. Run
ssh-keygen -t ed25519in your local terminal and protect the private-key file with a passphrase. The public key ends in.pub; never upload or paste the private key. - Connect using the provider’s initial account. The exact account may be
rootor a distribution-specific user. Usessh user@server-ip. On the first connection, compare the displayed host fingerprint with the value shown in the provider console or image documentation before accepting it. - Create a named administrator. On Debian or Ubuntu, run
sudo adduser admin, thensudo usermod -aG sudo admin. Replaceadminwith a name that identifies the person or service owner; do not share one administrator account. - Install the key for the new account. From your local machine,
ssh-copy-id admin@server-ipcopies the public key when that utility is available. Otherwise, create/home/admin/.ssh, place the public-key line inauthorized_keys, and set ownership and permissions so only the account can read the directory and file. - Test a second session. Open a new terminal and log in as
adminwhile the original session remains active. Runsudo -vto confirm administrative access. Keep this tested path available before changing root or SSH settings.
Disable routine root and password access only after testing
DigitalOcean’s production setup guidance recommends SSH-key authentication for a sudo non-root user and no password-based access to root. You can apply that principle by creating a drop-in such as /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/99-hardening.conf containing PermitRootLogin no and, once key login works, PasswordAuthentication no. Check the syntax with sudo sshd -t, reload the SSH service, and verify a fresh key-based login before closing the original session. Service names differ: Debian and Ubuntu commonly use ssh, while Fedora-family systems commonly use sshd.

Update the operating system before installing software
Package updates fix security issues and correct bugs in the base image. Read the proposed changes rather than blindly accepting a prompt, especially when a kernel, SSH package or networking component is being replaced.

Configure the firewall without locking yourself out
Firewall ordering is the most common beginner mistake. Hetzner’s first-server documentation gives the essential warning: “Never enable the firewall before you have allowed SSH. Otherwise, you’ll lock yourself out of your server.”
- List the services you actually need. A freshly provisioned machine generally needs SSH. Add HTTP and HTTPS only after a web service is installed. Add a game-service port only when that application is configured and you understand whether it uses TCP, UDP or both.
- Allow SSH first. On Ubuntu or Debian,
sudo ufw allow 22/tcpis a direct rule. If you have changed SSH to a different port, allow that port instead. Keep your current SSH session open. - Allow application ports deliberately. For a web service, add the required HTTP or HTTPS rules. Do not open database, administration or development ports to the entire internet unless the application’s security design requires it.
- Enable and inspect UFW. Run
sudo ufw enable, thensudo ufw status verbose. Confirm the SSH rule appears before disconnecting. - Coordinate provider and host firewalls. A provider-level firewall filters traffic before it reaches the VPS; UFW filters it on the machine. Rules must permit the same required traffic at both layers. Keep a console or rescue path documented in case one layer blocks SSH.
Ubuntu documents UFW as its default firewall frontend, but syntax differs on Fedora-family systems and on provider firewalls. Use the commands for your named distribution and check the provider’s current interface before applying a rule.
Linux administration tasks you will use every week
Install, remove and identify packages
Use the distribution package manager whenever possible so files and updates are tracked. On Debian or Ubuntu, sudo apt install package-name installs a package and sudo apt remove package-name removes it while retaining some configuration. On DNF-based systems, use sudo dnf install package-name and sudo dnf remove package-name. Replace package-name with the actual package documented by the application.

Control services with systemd
Most current distributions use systemd. sudo systemctl status service-name shows whether a service is running and recent errors. Use sudo systemctl start service-name or sudo systemctl stop service-name for immediate control, and sudo systemctl enable service-name when it should start at boot. Do not enable a service until you have confirmed its configuration and required ports.
Read logs instead of guessing
sudo journalctl -u service-name -n 100 --no-pager displays the latest entries for one service. sudo journalctl -p warning -b filters warnings from the current boot. Authentication failures may appear in the system journal or in distribution-specific files such as /var/log/auth.log. Logs can contain credentials or personal data, so restrict access and avoid posting them publicly without review.
Check disk, memory and processes
df -hshows filesystem capacity; a full root filesystem can stop databases, logins and updates.free -hshows memory and swap usage.topprovides a live process view; sort by CPU or memory to find pressure.ps auxgives a point-in-time process list.du -sh /path/*helps locate large directories, including runaway logs or application data.
Linode’s administration guidance treats monitoring, storage, filesystems, security and new system builds as core administration areas. Learning these checks is more useful than memorizing one provider’s dashboard.
Verify network and file permissions
ss -tulpn lists listening sockets and the process associated with each one. Use getent hosts example.com to test name resolution from the VPS and curl -I https://example.com to test an HTTP endpoint when curl is installed. For files, inspect ownership with ls -l, change ownership with sudo chown user:group file, and apply the least permissive mode that the application needs with chmod. Avoid making an entire application directory world-writable.
Monitoring: detect failure before users do
Enable the provider’s monitoring where available and establish a simple local routine. Watch CPU load, memory, disk capacity, network traffic and the health of important services. Set an alert threshold for a filesystem approaching capacity rather than waiting for it to reach 100 percent.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Pair metrics with logs. A high CPU reading requires process inspection; a service-health alert requires systemctl status and journal review; failed SSH connections require checking the firewall, the listening socket and authentication logs. This combination separates a stopped service from a network-access problem or resource exhaustion.
Backups, snapshots and an actual recovery plan
Availability is not the same as backup. A running VPS can still contain corrupted, deleted or encrypted data. Enable provider backups or snapshots when they fit the workload, and keep independent copies for data that cannot be recreated.
- List what must be restored: application files, databases, configuration, SSH access and DNS or networking settings.
- Record how to create a replacement VPS from a snapshot or backup and where the restored disk appears.
- Test restoration in a controlled, non-critical environment. Restore a test file or service, verify permissions and confirm that the application starts.
- Record the test date, result and any missing step. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
Provider documentation from DigitalOcean and Hetzner describes backups and snapshots as available features, but the administrator still has to choose retention, protect access to the backup account and verify that recovery works.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Deploy an application only after the base is ready
Once access, updates, firewall rules, monitoring and recovery are in place, create a dedicated system user for the application when its documentation supports that model. Store configuration and data in documented paths, keep secrets out of public repositories, and run the service under the least privilege it needs.
Open only the ports required by the finished service. For a game server, consult the game’s current documentation for its port and protocol, then add the matching provider and UFW rules. Confirm that the process is listening with ss -tulpn and that its logs show a clean startup before asking users to connect.

How to choose a beginner-friendly VPS provider
“Easy” should mean clear controls and an understandable responsibility boundary, not merely a one-click create button. Compare providers using the same checklist.
| Decision area | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Management model | Who applies OS updates, manages users, configures firewalls and responds to security incidents? | Self-managed plans require you to schedule and document all of that work. |
| Images and lifecycle | Which Linux distributions and versions are offered, and how are end-of-support images handled? | A supported image receives security fixes and has current provider tooling. |
| Access and networking | Are SSH keys, a browser console, rescue mode, private networking and IPv6 available? | Console and rescue access provide a fallback when SSH or a firewall rule fails. |
| Security controls | Can you define provider firewall rules, restrict source addresses and separate projects or networks? | Filtering at the provider layer can reduce exposure before packets reach the VPS. |
| Monitoring and recovery | Are metrics, alerts, backups and snapshots included or billed separately? How is a restore performed? | Features matter only when their retention and restore workflow fit your workload. |
| Location and support | Is there a region near your users, and does support cover the OS or only the underlying infrastructure? | Latency, legal requirements and troubleshooting help differ by location and support scope. |
| Total recurring cost | What are the charges for compute, storage, IP addresses, backups and bandwidth? | The monthly total is more useful than the advertised base instance price. |
DigitalOcean, Akamai Connected Cloud/Linode and Hetzner Cloud all document selectable images and administration features, but offerings, regions and prices change. Check the provider’s current product pages and terms for your location before committing.
Troubleshoot the failures beginners see most
SSH suddenly says connection refused or timed out
Keep the existing session open if possible. Check the server IP, provider status, provider firewall and UFW rules. On the VPS console, run sudo systemctl status ssh or the distribution’s SSH service name, then sudo ss -tlnp to confirm that SSH is listening. A timeout usually points to routing or firewall filtering; a refusal often means no process is listening on that address and port.
A service is running but users cannot connect
Confirm the service is listening on the expected address and port with ss -tulpn. Check both firewall layers, then inspect the service journal for a bind error, missing permission or invalid configuration. If the process listens only on 127.0.0.1, remote clients cannot reach it until the application is configured for the intended interface.
The VPS is slow or stops responding
Use the provider console if SSH is unavailable. Check free -h, df -h and top for memory pressure, a full disk or a runaway process. Review logs for repeated crashes. Do not keep adding memory or CPU without identifying the process or workload that is consuming the resource.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAn update changed behavior
Review your maintenance record and package-manager transaction output. Check service status and recent journal entries, verify configuration syntax, and use the provider’s snapshot or rescue process only after preserving the evidence you need. Schedule reboots during a planned maintenance window when the workload permits.
A sustainable maintenance routine
After every change
- Record what changed, why it changed and which account performed it.
- Test SSH access, the firewall status and the affected service.
- Check logs for warnings and confirm the expected port is listening.
Regularly
- Apply distribution security and package updates.
- Review disk, memory and CPU trends rather than isolated readings.
- Verify that backups are completing and test a restoration according to your documented plan.
- Remove unused accounts, packages and firewall rules.
This routine turns a one-time server setup into manageable operations. The beginner goal is not to memorize every Linux command; it is to preserve access, limit exposure, see failures early and know how to recover without guessing.
