Little Nightmares III does not support full crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo platforms. Its multiplayer is online-only and generally requires both players to use compatible versions within the same platform family. The confirmed cross-generation exception is Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, which can play together following the January 2026 update.

Bandai Namco’s official Q&A says players must use the same platform and confirms that cross-platform play between different manufacturers is not supported.

What does not work?
These combinations are not officially supported:
- PlayStation and Xbox
- PlayStation and PC
- PlayStation and Nintendo Switch or Switch 2
- Xbox and Nintendo Switch or Switch 2
- PC and Nintendo Switch or Switch 2
- Xbox-console versions and PC versions purchased through Steam or another non-Microsoft storefront
Having the game available on several systems does not mean those systems share multiplayer. Platform availability and crossplay are separate features.

Does PS4 play with PS5?
Do not assume that PS4 and PS5 can play together. Cross-generation multiplayer was unavailable at launch on October 10, 2025, and Bandai Namco’s later documentation specifically confirms only Switch-to-Switch 2 cross-generation multiplayer. There is no equivalent official confirmation for PS4-to-PS5 co-op.

Does Xbox One play with Xbox Series X|S?
This pairing is also not clearly confirmed by Bandai Namco’s current multiplayer documentation. The Microsoft Store version covers Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC and is marked Xbox Play Anywhere, but Play Anywhere does not by itself prove that the game’s multiplayer session protocol accepts different Xbox generations together. Treat Xbox One-to-Xbox Series co-op as unverified rather than guaranteed.
The Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 exception
At launch, cross-generation co-op was not available. Bandai Namco’s January 2026 update explicitly added “NSW and NSW2 cross gen multiplayer.” The update released for PS4 and Xbox One on January 28, 2026, and for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 on February 3, 2026.
As a result, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 owners can play the campaign together, provided both installations are updated and the other platform requirements are met.

How to start online co-op
- Launch Little Nightmares III.
- Select Multiplayer from the main menu.
- Invite the other player through your platform’s friends or invitation system.
- Have the other player accept the invitation and wait for the session to synchronize.
The official multiplayer guide does not require lobby codes or special commands. Invitations are handled through the platform’s friend system.
What is Friend’s Pass?
Friend’s Pass lets one player join the full campaign without buying a second full copy. It does not enable crossplay and does not bypass platform or generation restrictions.
The non-owner must install the platform-specific product named Little Nightmares III – Free Trial & Friend’s Pass. The full-game owner then sends the invitation. The relevant listings are:

The Friend’s Pass application can play the beginning of the game for free. To complete the campaign, the invited player needs the full-game owner to host the online session. Progress made during the trial carries over if the trial player later purchases the full game.
Online-only multiplayer
Little Nightmares III supports two-player online co-op and single-player play with an AI companion. It does not support:
- Local co-op
- Couch co-op
- Split-screen multiplayer
- Two players sharing one console with two controllers

Save restrictions in co-op
Co-op saves cannot freely switch between solo and multiplayer:
- A save started in solo cannot be continued in co-op.
- A save started in co-op must continue with the same two players.
- Start another save for solo play or for a different co-op partner.
- The game provides up to eight saves.
This is a save-system rule, not a crossplay restriction. If the game refuses to load a previous save after changing modes or partners, start the appropriate new save rather than treating it as a connection failure.
Online subscription requirements
On PlayStation, both players need PlayStation Plus for online play, according to the PlayStation game page and the Friend’s Pass listing.

The Xbox listing shows the Friend’s Pass as cloud-playable with Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate and says a purchase is required for the full experience. Xbox’s exact online-entitlement requirements can depend on the account and platform arrangement, so the PlayStation requirement should not automatically be applied to Xbox or PC.
Troubleshooting common co-op problems
“This game does not currently support cross-gen play”
This message normally indicates an unsupported generation pairing, especially PS4 with PS5 or Xbox One with Xbox Series X|S. It is not proof that Friend’s Pass is broken or that your internet connection has failed. Check the platform pairing first; the only later cross-generation pairing explicitly documented by Bandai Namco is Switch with Switch 2.
“Lost connection to other player”
A failed session after accepting an invitation can result from an unsupported pairing, mismatched game builds, a normal network failure, or co-op synchronization problems. Bandai Namco’s Day 1 patch and November 2025 update addressed multiplayer synchronization, progression, desynchronization during puzzles, animations, interactions, and chase sequences.

If the pairing itself is unsupported, no network troubleshooting can make it work.
The invite sends the friend to a purchase page
Check that the invited player installed the separate Free Trial & Friend’s Pass product rather than only a demo. Also verify that:
- The Friend’s Pass belongs to the same platform version.
- The owner invited the correct account or platform profile.
- The platform pairing is supported.
A previous save will not continue
Confirm whether the save was created in solo mode, with a different co-op partner, or in the current two-player setup. The game intentionally prevents switching an existing save between those arrangements. Start a separate save when changing modes or partners.

- “PS4 and PS5 definitely play together.” This is not confirmed by the current official documentation.
- “Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S definitely play together.” Xbox Play Anywhere and backward compatibility do not independently confirm cross-generation multiplayer.
- “Friend’s Pass enables crossplay.” It only removes the second purchase requirement within a compatible pairing.
- “The game supports couch co-op.” Multiplayer is online-only.
- “The game has full crossplay because it is on many platforms.” Being released on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Switch, and Switch 2 does not mean those platforms can join one another.
