Live esports betting—also called in-play or in-running betting—is wagering while a match is taking place. Prices can change as match information arrives, and markets may be suspended or settled based on that information. Whether it is legal, how it is regulated, and what protections apply depend on where you are; a delayed stream can also leave you behind people with faster information.

What live esports betting means

The UK Gambling Commission defines in-play betting as betting while an event is actually taking place. It says betting on electronic sports should be treated no differently from betting on another live event under its guidance. Those are UK regulatory statements, not a rule that applies everywhere.

Unlike a wager placed before a match begins, an in-play wager is made after the event is underway. The available markets and their terms depend on the operator and jurisdiction; there is no single set of esports markets or terms established across providers.

How live markets change during a match

In-play prices can be amended continuously as operators receive event information and account for their liabilities. Operators may update odds, suspend a market while information is checked or an event unfolds, and settle wagers using results information. Timing and data accuracy matter to both the operator and the customer.

HyperX Cloud III – Wired Gaming Headset, PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Angled 53mm Drivers, Spatial Audio, Memory Foam, Durable Frame, Ultra-Clear 10mm Mic, USB-C, USB-A, 3.5mm – Black/Red
  • Comfort is King: Comfort’s in the Cloud III’s DNA. Built for gamers who can’t have an uncomfortable headset ruin the flow of their full-combo, disrupt their speedrun, or knocking them out of the zone.
  • Audio Tuned for Your Entertainment: Angled 53mm drivers have been tuned by HyperX audio engineers to provide the optimal listening experience that accents the dynamic sounds of gaming.
  • Upgraded Microphone for Clarity and Accuracy: Captures high-quality audio for clear voice chat and calls. The mic is noise-cancelling and features a built-in mesh filter to omit disruptive sounds and LED mic mute indicator lets you know when you’re muted.
  • Durability, for the Toughest of Battles: The headset is flexible and features an aluminum frame so it’s resilient against travel, accidents, mishaps, and your ‘level-headed’ reactions to losses and defeat screens.

A market being suspended does not, by itself, explain why it was suspended or what will happen to a particular wager. The relevant operator’s market and settlement rules determine how a bet is handled. Those terms should be checked before placing a wager, rather than inferred from a live display.

Why stream delay can put viewers at a disadvantage

Live pictures and event data do not necessarily reach everyone at the same time. A person at the venue, an operator receiving a fast data feed, and a viewer watching a delayed broadcast may each learn about an event at different moments. If a price or market has already changed based on faster information, the viewer may be acting on an outdated picture of the match.

The UK Gambling Commission’s Remote Technical Standard RTS 15 says customers should be made aware that they may not have the latest information when betting on live events and may be disadvantaged against operators or other customers with more up-to-date information. This is a UK technical standard; it does not establish identical requirements elsewhere.

Courtsiding and event rules

The UK Gambling Commission uses “courtsiding” for using or transmitting information from a live event for gambling in a way that exploits the delay between live action and a television or other feed. It notes that courtsiding may breach event entry terms. The Commission does not consider it cheating under section 42 of the UK Gambling Act 2005; that is the UK regulator’s interpretation, not a universal legal ruling.

Integrity risks are separate from ordinary match volatility

Fast-changing odds are not, by themselves, evidence of wrongdoing. But live betting can also create integrity risks when betting activity is linked to deliberate manipulation of play.

In an 8 October 2024 ruling concerning a League of Legends Circuit Oceania match, Riot Games reported suspicious betting activity aligned with unusual player performance and described evidence of deliberate underperformance for betting purposes. It banned the player it found involved for 36 months. This documented case establishes that such a matter occurred; it does not establish how common match-fixing or suspicious betting is across esports.

The World Lottery Association’s WLA-SCS:2024 standard calls for documented procedures addressing live-bet integrity, results handling, customer protection, time delays, results sources, reversal of results, and prevention of courtsiding, including delays in live pictures. It also calls for monitoring odds changes, blocked markets, events, customer transactions, and irregularities. The standard is an industry framework, not a replacement for local law or an individual operator’s licence conditions.

Is live esports betting legal where you live?

There is no global yes-or-no answer. The UK Gambling Commission says eSports should be treated like other live events for betting regulation. Australia takes a different approach to online in-play sports betting: the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) says it is prohibited under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. Neither example determines the law in another country, state, or territory, and the Australian rule should not be read as an esports-specific enforcement case.

ACMA reported that Tabcorp paid a $158,400 penalty after accepting 426 in-play bets across 32 tennis matches from February 2024 through June 2025. That enforcement example concerns tennis in Australia; it is not an esports statistic or a measure of esports betting activity.

Rules can also govern advertising separately from whether a wager may be offered. Liquor & Gaming NSW says it is an offence to publish advertising relating to a sporting event in progress in New South Wales, including live odds and in-play betting services. The agency says such advertising may encourage continuous or impulsive betting. This is a New South Wales rule, not a statement about every Australian jurisdiction.

What to verify locally

  • Check the current rules for your country and, where relevant, your state or territory; do not rely on a provider’s availability alone as proof that betting is lawful.
  • Verify that the provider is licensed by the regulator responsible for your location, and that its licence covers the activity being offered.
  • Read the market suspension, settlement, and results-source rules for the specific service. Do not assume those terms are uniform across operators.

Customer protections and safer use

The UK Gambling Commission says licensed operators must have policies to identify customers who may be at risk of harm, interact with customers they suspect may be at risk, and make responsible-gambling information and help available. These are UK licensee duties; protections and routes for help vary by jurisdiction.

The Commission also notes that cash-out offers connected to live markets can be volatile, particularly late in an event. A cash-out offer is not a fixed promise of value throughout a match; its availability and terms should be read in the operator’s rules.
