Before you start
Do not copy lmikjres.dll from a random DLL download website into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. - Windows Update
- The printer manufacturer’s official support page
- The original Windows installation media, where applicable
- Windows repair tools such as DISM and System File Checker
- A trusted antivirus quarantine and restore workflow
Before changing anything, record:
- The complete error message
- The application or executable displaying it
- The printer model
- Your Windows version and build
- The full path named in the error, if one is shown
- Whether the problem started after an update, driver installation, cleanup, antivirus detection, or printer removal
The filename alone does not prove that the file belongs in a particular folder.

Fix 1: Reinstall the affected printer and its official driver
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
This is the most likely fix when the error appears during printing, printer installation, application startup involving printing, or removal of old printer software.
Remove the printer
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
If the printer does not appear in the modern Settings list, open Control Panel and select View devices and printers. Remove the printer from there if it is still listed.
Remove an obsolete driver package
After restarting:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Look for the driver belonging to the removed printer.
- Select it and choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that option.
- Restart Windows again.
Do not remove drivers for other working printers unless you know they belong to the same obsolete package. If Windows refuses to remove the package, leave it in place and continue with the official driver installation.
Install the correct driver
- Go to the printer manufacturer’s official support page.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Select your Windows version and system architecture when prompted.
- Download the complete driver or installation package.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Connect the printer only when the installer requests it, unless the manufacturer’s instructions say otherwise.
- Print a test page.
Microsoft recommends Windows Update or the printer manufacturer’s official support page when obtaining printer drivers. The manufacturer package is particularly important for older printers because a generic Windows driver may not include every legacy component.
If the installer cannot find a suitable package, use the built-in driver wizard:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Printer server properties.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select Add.
- Follow the wizard.
- Choose the correct processor architecture and printer model.
Windows uses System32 for native system files and SysWOW64 for 32-bit compatibility files. Do not assume that a folder containing “32” identifies the required architecture. Match the driver to the Windows installation and the printer package, not to the name of a system folder.

The repair succeeded if:
- The printer installs without the
lmikjres.dllmessage. - Windows can print a test page.
- The affected application starts normally.
- The error does not return after a restart.
- The printer’s queue opens and processes a document.

Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
Time needed: 5 to 30 minutes
An old printer component may be missing because Windows is incomplete, outdated, or waiting for a driver-related update.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- Test the affected printer or application.
If Windows Update reports an error, restart the computer and try again. Disconnect unnecessary USB printers during the update, then reconnect the printer after Windows finishes.
Do not expect a current Windows update to add every legacy printer component. Modern Windows may not contain this old component at all. If an old application or driver installer requests lmikjres.dll, reinstalling that application or printer package may be necessary.

Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM and System File Checker
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
Use this fix when the message appears in more than one application, when several Windows components behave incorrectly, or when the problem began after an interrupted update, system repair, or disk cleanup.
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management first, followed by System File Checker.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to complete successfully.
The scan can appear to pause for a while. Do not close the window while it is running.
Run SFC
After DISM finishes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows when it finishes, then test the affected program or printer.

Interpret the result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows system files were not found to be damaged. Continue with the printer-driver repair.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, review the CBS log if necessary, and consider Windows recovery options.
- DISM cannot complete: Check that Windows has a working internet connection, then try again. For deeper image repair, use Microsoft’s documented DISM repair procedures or Windows recovery media.

Do not keep repeating SFC without noting what changed. If the tools cannot repair the component store, the next step is targeted recovery or reinstalling the affected Windows or printer component.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Security software may have quarantined a legitimate file, or it may have detected a suspicious copy placed by an old installer.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
lmikjres.dllor the printer software. - Inspect the detected file’s path and source.
- Do not restore it merely because the filename matches.
Restore a quarantined file only when it came from a trusted, digitally signed Windows or printer-driver installation and your security product identifies it as safe. If the file came from an unknown application folder or an unofficial download, leave it quarantined, run a full scan, and reinstall the printer software from the official source.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent driver or update change
Time needed: 15 to 40 minutes
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver update, Windows change, printer-software installation, or system cleanup and a restore point exists from before the failure.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove drivers and applications installed after the selected restore point. After the rollback, reinstall the printer driver only from the manufacturer’s official support page if necessary.
Fix 6: Repair the old application that requests the file
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
If only one old program reports the error while Windows printing works normally, the program may be carrying a private copy, expecting an obsolete printer subsystem, or using an incomplete installation.

- Find the application named in the error.
- Select its menu button.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the application from its official source.
- Reinstall its printer or hardware component if the application requires one.
Do not copy lmikjres.dll into the application folder unless the application vendor’s documentation explicitly supplies that file and instructs you to do so. A program-specific error can require a program-specific repair rather than a global Windows change.
Does regsvr32 fix lmikjres.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A resource or printer-driver DLL may not be self-registering. Running a command such as:
regsvr32 lmikjres.dll
does not restore a missing file, repair a printer package, or prove that the DLL is corrupt. A “module failed to load” result may simply mean that the file is not designed for registration.
Use regsvr32 only when the printer or application vendor’s documentation explicitly requires registration and provides the correct file path and command. Otherwise, reinstall the driver or application package.

If you find a copy of lmikjres.dll on the computer, do not judge it by the filename alone.
Check its location
Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the General and Details tabs. A copy in an unexpected temporary folder, a random application directory, or a user-download folder deserves additional scrutiny.
The dossier for this file does not establish one universal path for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Do not treat a copy in System32, SysWOW64, a driver store, or an application folder as automatically correct.

Check the digital signature
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Select the signer.
- Choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature.
The absence of a signature is not, by itself, proof of malware for every legacy driver file. However, an invalid signature, an unexpected publisher, or a file that repeatedly changes location is a reason to stop and scan the system.
Scan the file
Right-click the file and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender, where that option is available. Also run a full scan if the file appeared unexpectedly or was restored from an untrusted source.

The most likely causes are:
