For ordinary Fishing training in Old School RuneScape, fly fishing salmon is generally faster XP training than catching lobsters. A lobster gives more Fishing XP per catch—90 versus salmon’s 70—but the larger per-catch reward does not make up for the slower catches. Salmon requires level 30 Fishing; lobster fishing requires level 40.
How the two methods compare
| Method | Fishing level and requirements | Equipment | Fishing XP per catch | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary salmon fly fishing | Level 30 Fishing | Fly-fishing rod and feathers | 70 | Early power training and faster ordinary XP gains |
| Lobster cage fishing | Level 40 Fishing | Lobster pot | 90 | Players who want lobster catches or prefer this method, rather than maximizing XP speed |
| Leaping salmon (Barbarian Fishing) | Level 58 Fishing, relevant Barbarian Training, and level 30 Strength and Agility | Barbarian rod and suitable bait | Rates vary by fish and training method | A separate, higher-requirement method that also trains Strength and Agility |
The level requirements, tools, and catch XP are listed in the OSRS Wiki’s Fishing training and Lobster guidance.

Why salmon can be faster despite lower XP per fish
XP per catch is only one part of XP per hour. The number of successful catches, time spent waiting or moving, and whether you drop or bank fish all affect the final rate. Salmon fly fishing is commonly recommended as an early power-training route; lobster fishing gives more XP for each lobster but is generally slower for XP-focused training. The OSRS Wiki’s Salmon and training guidance support that qualitative comparison.

What changes your actual XP per hour
- Fishing level: catches and rates change as your level rises.
- Dropping or banking: dropping fish avoids banking trips but requires attention; banking adds travel and time.
- AFK versus active play: less frequent interaction can reduce realized rates compared with focused training.
- Tick manipulation: can increase rates, but demands more clicks and attention.
- Location and execution: movement, interruptions, and familiarity with the method affect results.
The OSRS Wiki’s Fishing training guide gives community estimates for fly fishing that vary by level and execution. It reports AFK rates from about 13,000 XP per hour at level 20 to about 50,000 at level 99, and 3-tick rates from about 23,000 at level 20 to about 93,000 at level 99. These are guide estimates, not guaranteed results or official Jagex benchmarks, and they are not a matched comparison with lobster rates.
When leaping salmon means something different
“Salmon” can also refer to leaping salmon caught through Barbarian Fishing. This is not the same as ordinary fly fishing: it is a members-oriented route that becomes available at level 58 Fishing after the relevant Barbarian Training, and requires level 30 Strength and Agility for leaping salmon. It awards some Strength and Agility XP alongside Fishing XP. Tick manipulation can substantially raise rates, with the trade-off of more attention and clicks. See the OSRS Wiki’s Barbarian Fishing guidance for this separate method.

- Consider Barbarian leaping salmon if you meet its higher requirements and also value Strength and Agility XP, or are willing to use a more active method.
