Lords of the Fallen (2023) Version 2.0 launched on April 17, 2025, adding Full Shared Progression Co-op and a free Friend’s Pass. The key distinction is whether the guest’s story progress is saved: Shared Progression can advance both players’ campaigns, while Non-Shared Progression keeps the guest’s story separate. Both modes let a Friend’s Pass player join an owner, but saving has important limits.

What Version 2.0 added to co-op

CI Games presented Version 2.0 as the game’s definitive edition. For co-op, its main changes were Full Shared Progression and the free Friend’s Pass. Players could also continue using standard co-op without shared story progression. The update supports crossplay through password matchmaking, rather than promising crossplay across every multiplayer feature. CI Games’ Version 2.0 announcement

Both players in an online session can revive one another, collect 100% of vigor, and loot. Shared Progression has extra campaign-matching requirements, so decide on a mode before setting out rather than assuming that joining a friend automatically saves the same story progress for both players.

What is the free Friend’s Pass?

The Friend’s Pass lets someone who does not own the full game join a player who does for the entire adventure, in either Shared or Non-Shared Progression Co-op. The pass also includes access to the character creator and tutorial area; it is not a separate purchase of the full game. Friend’s Pass details

#1 Best Overall
Lords of the Fallen Standard Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Overhauled Character Creator – Create more lifelike characters with improved facial detail, body shapes, and visual fidelity
  • Shared-Progression Cross-Play Cooperative Play – Both players now save all main story progress as long as they’re on the same “New Game” and have defeated a similar number of main bosses within one. Both players retains all loot, 100 percent vigor, and can revive each other in all online sessions.
  • Free Friend’s Pass – Invite any friend to join your adventure in online co-op even if they don’t own the game. Friends keep loot and character progress, plus get full offline access to the tutorial and character creator
  • Revamped Combat and Movement – V2.0 adds smoother animations, better weapon response, refined lock-on, improved evasions, and new grievous strike prompts

Saving depends on the session and how the guest leaves. The official FAQ specifically says that a Friend’s Pass player’s progress is not saved if they leave to the main menu. Agree on whether the guest needs persistent progress before beginning, and do not treat a Friend’s Pass session as a guaranteed substitute for owning the game. Official co-op FAQ

Shared or Non-Shared Progression: which should you choose?

What matters Shared Progression Non-Shared Progression
Story progress Both players can save mainline progress during online sessions, if campaign-matching conditions are met. The guest’s story progress does not carry over. The guest keeps experience and non-quest items.
Campaign requirements Both must be on the same New Game level, such as NG or NG+1, and within one main boss of each other. No Shared Progression matching requirement is stated in the FAQ.
Guest actions April 2026 guidance says guests can upgrade equipment, use vendors, rest and warp, plant Vestige seeds, start bosses, skip cutscenes, and use Chrysalis Rebirth. The host chooses Limited or Full guest privileges. Full adds actions such as warping, planting seeds, starting bosses, and skipping cutscenes; Limited restricts the guest to a narrower set of camp and equipment actions.
Items and rewards Quest items, key items, boss rewards, and chest items are obtained by both players when one obtains them; some other items require each player to pick them up. Some rewards are tied to host progression, and some items require individual pickup.

These distinctions reflect CI Games’ co-op FAQ and April 2026 guidance. Official co-op FAQ April 2026 co-op guidance

  • Explore two vast, parallel worlds - Travel through two parallel worlds in your epic quest to topple Adyr. As the living kingdom presents its own brutal challenges, untold horrors lurk in the nightmarish realm of the dead
  • Handle a device of unholy power: your lantern possesses the unholy power to cross worlds. Use this dark art to reach forgotten places, unearth legendary treasures, and manipulate your enemy's very soul
  • Rise from Death - Fall in the world of the living, and rise again in the world of the dead. You have one last chance to know your state, for all kinds of hellish creatures descend upon you
  • Unite or fight in online multiplayer: Face your entire quest side by side in uninterrupted online co-op, with appropriate rewards for completing community events. But be warned: heroes from other kingdoms can and will invade
  • Fully customize and develop your own character: Fully customize the appearance of your characters, before selecting one of nine character classes. Whatever starting path you take, develop your character to your own style of play by improving stats, weapons, armor and spells

Check campaign saves before starting Shared Progression

If the guest’s save differs from the host’s, the guest’s session progress is aligned to the host. The FAQ says the guest’s original solo save remains selectable from Load Game. If either player wants to preserve an independent story state, confirm which save and New Game level each is bringing into the session first.

How to join a friend or find matchmaking

  1. Go to a Vestige and open Multiplayer.
  2. For a private session, set a password and share it with the other player. For matchmaking, leave the password field empty.
  3. Make sure both players select the same progression settings. Shared Progression also requires the same New Game level and main-boss progress within one boss.
  4. If the connection fails, check that the selected co-op mode and password match, and whether ping restrictions are preventing the connection.

The official FAQ says crossplay is supported through password matchmaking in most multiplayer modes. That qualification matters: it does not establish that every multiplayer feature uses crossplay. Official co-op FAQ April 2026 co-op guidance

What happens if a player leaves?

  • If the guest leaves, the host can continue in their world.
  • If the host leaves, the session ends. Both players return to their own worlds at the last Vestige where they rested or warped.
  • When Shared Progression’s requirements are met, the FAQ says shared story progress remains aligned.

These session rules do not override the Friend’s Pass saving limitation: a pass player who leaves to the main menu does not save progress, according to the FAQ.

CI Games’ April 2026 co-op article and FAQ provide later guidance on progression, guest privileges, and matchmaking. Because co-op rules can change with updates, check the official FAQ if a connection or progression behavior differs from what you expect.
