If Lost Ark closes to the desktop, freezes, or exits after the Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) splash screen, work through the fixes below in order. Windows 11 is listed as Lost Ark’s recommended operating system, so a crash alone does not mean Windows 11 is unsupported. The likely cause depends on when the game exits: an EAC-screen failure points toward anti-cheat or conflicting software, while a crash during play makes graphics drivers, overlays, settings, or system stability more relevant.
A disconnect is different: if the game remains open but loses its connection, focus on network or server status rather than crash repairs. Likewise, when many players report the same problem after a patch or during maintenance, check Lost Ark’s Known Issues and recent release notes before changing your PC.
Start here: restart Windows and Steam, verify the game files in Steam, and update the graphics driver. If the game exits around the EAC screen, prioritize the EAC repair instead of changing in-game graphics settings.
As of August 18, 2026, the Steam listing specifies 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 11, and 110 GB of available storage; it lists 64-bit Windows 11 as recommended and 64-bit Windows 10 as minimum. Requirements can change, so check the current Steam listing.

Match the crash pattern to the likely fix
| What happens | Start with |
|---|---|
| Steam says “Preparing to Launch,” then stops | Restart Steam and Windows, update drivers, verify files, then repair EAC. |
| The game closes just after the EAC splash screen | Repair EAC, check security software, and close overlays or other software that may conflict. |
| Lost Ark crashes after you enter a character or zone | Update or roll back the GPU driver, disable overlays, and test graphics settings. |
| Freeze or black screen, then desktop | Check the GPU driver and GPU selection; test windowed-game settings and investigate temperatures if other games also fail. |
| The problem began after a game update | Check Known Issues and release notes, then verify files. Avoid deleting DLLs or applying old community workarounds. |
| Other games or applications crash too | Investigate Windows, memory, storage, temperatures, and system stability rather than treating this as a Lost Ark-only problem. |
| An EAC Offline or suspicious-software message appears | Follow Lost Ark’s official EAC troubleshooting; do not bypass anti-cheat. |
Lost Ark’s technical support area includes resources for EAC, crashes, system requirements, performance, and DxDiag reports. The official EAC guidance also discusses Windows updates, file validation, EAC repair, background software, antivirus interference, malware scans, and restarting.
1. Restart Windows and fully exit Steam
Use this first when the game will not launch or an earlier crash may have left Steam, Lost Ark, or EAC running in the background. A clean restart clears stuck processes without changing settings.
- Close Lost Ark, then select Steam > Exit.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. If Steam or Lost Ark is still running, end only those processes.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Steam normally and launch Lost Ark from Library.
If the game still exits at the same point, note whether that is before or after the EAC splash screen and continue to the matching steps. Steam’s launch troubleshooting also recommends a fresh restart and checking drivers and game files.
2. Check system requirements and free space
Compare your PC with the live Lost Ark Steam requirements. The listing, checked August 18, 2026, gives these values:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Requirement | Steam listing |
|---|---|
| Minimum operating system | 64-bit Windows 10 |
| Recommended operating system | 64-bit Windows 11 |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM |
| DirectX | Version 11 |
| Available storage | 110 GB |
| Minimum graphics shown | GeForce GTX 1050 Ti or Radeon RX 560 |
| Recommended graphics shown | GeForce GTX 1660 Super or Radeon RX 6600 |
“Available storage” is not just the installed game size. Keep additional room for updates, temporary files, shader data, and Windows paging. Steam notes that requirements can change, so use its current listing rather than treating these figures as permanent.
3. Install Windows and optional driver updates
Windows and platform-driver updates can address launch and compatibility issues. In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Then inspect Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. Recommended drivers may arrive through Windows Update, but optional driver updates are not installed automatically. See Microsoft’s driver-update guidance.

Restart after installing updates, even if Windows does not request it. If the crash started after a hardware change or Windows update, also check your computer or motherboard maker for chipset, BIOS, network, and other platform drivers; these are separate from the graphics driver.
4. Update or roll back the graphics driver
Try this if Lost Ark crashes during play, shows a black screen, or began failing after a graphics-driver change. Download drivers from the GPU maker, not a third-party automatic driver updater:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the installer offers a clean-install option, consider it after a GPU swap or repeated driver-related crashes. If the problem began immediately after an update, test the previous stable driver instead: the newest driver is not always the right diagnostic choice. Change one driver version at a time so you can tell whether it changes the crash.
5. Verify Lost Ark’s files in Steam
File verification is useful if the game fails to launch, crashes after an update, or may have incomplete or damaged files. In the current Steam client:
- Open Steam > Library.
- Right-click Lost Ark and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let the check finish.
- Restart Steam, then test the game.
Steam’s launch troubleshooting identifies corrupted or incomplete files as one reason a game may fail to start. Verification can reacquire affected game files, but it cannot fix an unstable driver, overheating, incompatible background software, or a server-side problem.
6. Repair Easy Anti-Cheat
Choose this when Lost Ark exits immediately after the EAC splash screen, shows an EAC Offline or validation error, or reports suspicious software. The exact setup utility name and folder can vary with EAC packaging; use the utility included in your current game installation rather than downloading a replacement from an unofficial site.

- In Steam, open Lost Ark’s local files from its Properties page.
- Locate the Easy Anti-Cheat folder, commonly under the game’s
BinariesWin64directory. - Run the included EAC setup or repair utility. If it requires elevation, run it as administrator.
- Choose the repair option for the installed service, if offered.
- Restart Windows and launch Lost Ark from Steam.
Lost Ark’s official EAC guidance lists EAC verification, updating, or reinstallation among possible remedies. Do not delete, rename, replace, or bypass anti-cheat files.
7. Disable overlays and non-essential background software
Overlays, recording tools, hardware monitors, and utilities that interact with games can interfere with launching or play. Temporarily exit or disable likely candidates, then test Lost Ark:
- Steam Overlay and Discord Overlay
- NVIDIA or AMD overlays and recording features
- Xbox Game Bar and screen recorders
- MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner
- RGB and motherboard-control utilities
- VPNs, network “optimizers,” macro tools, and automation utilities
- Other launchers or games with anti-cheat components running
Where practical, disable one item at a time; if that is too slow, close non-essential tools as a group and restore them gradually if Lost Ark launches. Steam’s launch troubleshooting and Lost Ark’s EAC guidance both recommend checking unnecessary or conflicting background software.
8. Check security software without weakening protection
Use this branch when EAC fails, a security notification appeared, or a game component may have been quarantined. Start a scan at Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, then choose a scan option. Review any detection carefully and consult official Lost Ark or security-vendor guidance before changing exclusions. Lost Ark’s EAC troubleshooting notes that antivirus false positives, malware, or blocked EAC components can affect EAC.
Do not permanently disable antivirus or exclude your entire Steam library as a routine fix. If a security conflict genuinely needs testing, keep it temporary and narrowly scoped, then restore protection immediately.
9. Select the right GPU and test Windows 11 display settings
On a laptop or PC with both integrated and discrete graphics, make sure Lost Ark uses the high-performance GPU. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add or select Lost Ark, choose Options, select High performance, save, and restart the game. Test while the laptop is connected to AC power.

If crashes happen only in borderless or windowed mode, test display variables individually: windowed versus fullscreen mode, Auto HDR, and Optimizations for windowed games in the same Graphics settings area. Microsoft says this feature is designed for DirectX 10 and 11 games in windowed or borderless modes; Lost Ark’s Steam listing specifies DirectX 11. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 graphics settings guidance. These are diagnostic tests, not guaranteed performance improvements; change one setting at a time.
10. Use a clean boot to isolate software conflicts
Try a clean boot when Lost Ark works intermittently or only after you close many applications. It starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs so you can see whether third-party software is involved.
- Search for
msconfigand open System Configuration. - On Services, check Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
- Open Startup and select Open Task Manager.
- Disable enabled startup apps, then restart Windows and test Lost Ark.
- If the crash stops, re-enable services and startup apps in groups, restarting and testing until you identify the conflict.
- When finished, open
msconfig, choose Normal startup on General, and re-enable the services and startup apps you disabled.
A clean boot is for diagnosis, not a permanent gaming setup. Some functionality may be temporarily unavailable. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot and restoration instructions, and restore normal startup when testing is complete.

Repair Windows if other applications also fail
If multiple games or apps crash, Windows Update is failing, or the problem followed a failed update, check Windows components before reinstalling one game. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Restart Windows afterward. Microsoft documents DISM as a Windows 10 and Windows 11 tool that must be run from an administrator Command Prompt in its DISM overview.
Investigate broader instability if several games crash
A single Lost Ark crash does not prove hardware is failing. If several games fail, check GPU temperatures and stability, RAM, storage health, power mode or power supply, and any overclock or undervolt. Consider whether a recent BIOS or driver change coincides with the problem. Change one variable at a time; do not assume that lowering Lost Ark’s graphics settings will resolve a system-wide fault.

Reinstall Lost Ark as a last resort
If Lost Ark alone still fails after file verification, EAC repair, driver checks, and software-conflict testing, reinstalling is reasonable but time-consuming. The current Steam listing specifies 110 GB of available storage, and the requirement may change.
- Back up screenshots, configuration files, and any local data you need.
- Uninstall Lost Ark through Steam.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall to a drive with enough free space.
- Verify the files after installation, then launch once with overlays disabled.
Steam also provides guidance about secondary installers and game-file repair. Avoid deleting random DLLs or redistributables by hand; that can create new problems rather than isolate the cause.
When to stop changing settings and contact support
Before making major system changes, check Lost Ark’s Known Issues, current release notes, and Steam announcements if the crash began after a patch. As of August 18, 2026, the Known Issues page was last updated in June 2026 and its visible current list did not identify a broad Windows 11 crash outage. That does not rule out a new patch-specific issue, and local repairs will not resolve maintenance or a server-side problem.
If the game remains broken, send Lost Ark Support a useful record rather than only saying it crashes. Include:
- When the crash occurs and whether the game closes, freezes, or disconnects
- The exact error message, or that no message appears
- Your Windows version and the game’s update timing
- GPU model and driver version, CPU, and RAM
- Whether the crash occurs before or after the EAC splash screen
- Which steps you tried and whether a clean boot changed the behavior
- A DxDiag report, using the resource in Lost Ark’s technical support area
Event Viewer can also help document timing: check Windows Logs > Application for an entry at the crash time and share it with support if relevant. A generic “Application Error” entry is evidence of when a failure occurred, not proof of its root cause.
Crash versus disconnect: do not apply the wrong fix
If Lost Ark remains open but loses its connection, treat that as a disconnect rather than a desktop crash. Lost Ark’s EAC troubleshooting mentions ports 18887–18903 in the context of periodic disconnections or failure to enter the game world. That is not a general remedy for a client that closes or freezes, so do not use port forwarding as a crash fix.
