Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch is a turn-based tactical roguelite built around compact, five-character squads, grid battles, branching routes, and upgrades that carry between runs. Its central appeal is the combination of positioning-focused combat and repeat attempts that change as players recruit, level, and equip their party. It is a spin-off rather than a required sequel: developer Ocean Drive Studio says it can be enjoyed separately from the original Lost Eidolons.
What kind of game is Veil of the Witch?
Ocean Drive Studio describes Veil of the Witch as a “roguelite strategy RPG with turn-based combat and branching progression.” The full release arrived on Steam on October 9, 2025, following Steam Early Access from November 5, 2024. Rather than a single uninterrupted campaign of conventional tactical battles, the game is framed around runs through a branching sequence of paths, encounters, random events, and rewards. A run brings a squad of five together from a roster of nine hybrid-class characters. The official descriptions emphasize adapting to the route and building a party through skills and equipment as it progresses. Nintendo’s publisher-provided description

Grid tactics and combinations
Combat is turn-based and takes place on a grid, with official descriptions highlighting positioning, weapon and armor choices, and skill synergies. The Steam page gives elemental interactions as examples: electrifying soaked enemies and igniting flammable terrain. These are descriptions of intended mechanics, not independent findings about how often those combinations arise or how well-balanced they are.
#1 Best Overall
Ocean Drive Studio says it designed smaller maps and a faster pace to reduce the time spent moving units through empty spaces between encounters. That explains the studio’s aim; whether the pace feels fast will depend on how a player experiences the battles and run structure. Ocean Drive Studio’s combat log
Growing a party through a run
Nintendo’s listing says characters gain skills while leveling during a run, while the Steam description stresses skill combinations that can control a battle or expose the squad to danger. Together, those systems suggest a tactical loop in which a party’s emerging strengths matter alongside positioning: a useful combination can shape an encounter, but choices are not presented as risk-free. The available official descriptions do not establish the exact odds, difficulty curve, or consequences of individual choices.
What carries over after a run?
Between runs, the Nintendo description says players can boost stats in town, unlock relics, strengthen bonds with allies, and earn class promotions. This persistent growth gives failed or completed runs a role in longer-term development, alongside the skills acquired during an individual attempt. The official material establishes those progression categories, but not how much power persists in practice or how many attempts are typically needed to unlock them.

How does it differ from the original Lost Eidolons?
Ocean Drive Studio positions Veil of the Witch as a roguelite spin-off set on the remote island of Anaerios. The developer contrasts the original game’s classic, story-driven tactical RPG structure and battles of up to ten units with this game’s smaller squad and more dynamic combat. It also says the two games can be enjoyed separately, so prior knowledge of the original is not presented as a requirement. Ocean Drive Studio’s franchise post
The practical distinction is the structure the player is choosing: Veil of the Witch is pitched around compact tactical encounters, decisions across branching runs, and between-run progression. The original is described by its developer as more conventionally story-driven and able to field larger battles. Those are developer-stated design distinctions, not a head-to-head assessment of story quality or tactical depth.

Is Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch worth playing?
Based on the published design, it is most likely to interest players who enjoy turn-based grid combat and are also comfortable repeating runs, building a party through successive choices, and earning some progression between attempts. Its five-member squad and hybrid-class roster provide a smaller-party framework, while branching routes and encounter rewards give each run its own decision path.
It may be a less natural fit for someone seeking only a large-scale, linear tactical campaign or a game whose appeal rests primarily on a continuous story. Official descriptions outline the premise and systems, but they do not establish performance, bug status, difficulty, endgame depth, story quality, or whether the progression feels generous. Readers should treat the recommendation as a design-based fit, not a firsthand review verdict.
