lucene++-contrib.dll belongs to a third-party application, not to Windows. The safest fix is to identify the program requesting lucene++-contrib.dll and repair or reinstall that program as a complete, architecture-matched package.
Do not download this DLL by itself and copy it into System32. The filename alone does not identify its exact version, publisher, bitness, compiler runtime, or original installation directory.

The DLL is used by software built with Lucene++, including documented third-party integrations such as IBSurgeon’s Lucene Full Text Search UDR for Firebird. Other custom enterprise applications, developer-built programs, and database extensions may use their own Lucene++ build.
Quick identification table
| What you know | What it means |
|---|---|
The error names lucene++-contrib.dll |
A program or plugin tried to load the Lucene++ contributed library |
| The file is missing beside an application | The application installation may be incomplete or damaged |
| Firebird reports “UDR module not loaded” | Check the Firebird UDR plugin package, companion DLLs, runtime, and architecture |
| The file exists but will not load | A dependent DLL, incompatible architecture, or corrupt file may be the real problem |
| The filename has no reliable version information | Inspect the parent application’s package instead of guessing from the name |
1. Identify the parent application first
Before replacing anything, find the executable, service, or plugin that is requesting the DLL.
Check the error context
Note when the error appears:
- While starting a desktop application
- When opening a database or document
- When a Windows service starts
- When Firebird loads a UDR
- After an update, uninstall, cleanup, or antivirus detection
- Only when opening a particular file or database
If the message appears inside another application, that application is the first repair target.
Search installed applications
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the application you were using when the error appeared.
- Select its More menu, then choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the application provides.
You can also inspect common installation folders:
C:Program Files
C:Program Files (x86)
For a database service or plugin, check the product’s documented installation directory rather than searching only the Windows folders.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not assume that a DLL-index entry naming a particular publisher proves that publisher supplied the file. The parent application’s installer and documentation are the reliable source.
2. Repair or reinstall the parent application
This is the most likely fix when the DLL was deleted, an update failed, or the installation was interrupted.
Use the application’s repair option
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find the affected application.
- Select Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Some programs provide repair controls in Control Panel instead:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
If the application has a launcher, use its Verify files, Repair, or equivalent function. This is preferable to copying a single DLL because it restores the DLLs that belong together.

If repair is unavailable:
- Back up application settings and databases.
- Download the current installer from the software developer or vendor that supplied the application.
- Confirm whether the application is x86 or x64.
- Uninstall the damaged installation if the vendor’s instructions require it.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Install the matching package using an administrator account.
- Launch the application and repeat the action that produced the error.
Do not mix lucene++-contrib.dll from one product or release with lucene++.dll or another companion DLL from a different package.
3. If the affected software is Firebird Lucene UDR
IBSurgeon’s Lucene Full Text Search UDR is a documented Windows user of this library. It provides separate Windows x64 and x86 packages.
For that integration, check the following:
- Determine whether the Firebird process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Obtain the matching
LuceneUdr_Win_x64.ziporLuceneUdr_Win_x86.zippackage from the vendor’s official project source. - Extract the package as instructed by the vendor.
- Place the supplied dynamic libraries in:
<Firebird installation>pluginsudr
- Confirm that the directory contains the companion files supplied by the same package, including:
lucene++.dll
lucene++-contrib.dll
LuceneUdr.dll
- Confirm that the Firebird service account can read the directory and its files.
- Run the supplied SQL installation scripts, including
fts$install.sqlandfts$install_1.sql, as required by the UDR documentation. - Restart the Firebird service.
- Test the database operation again.
A Firebird message such as “UDR module not loaded” does not necessarily mean that LuceneUdr.dll itself is absent. Windows may be reporting that a dependency of the UDR cannot be loaded.
4. Install the matching Visual C++ runtime
A DLL can be present while Windows still reports that the specified module cannot be found. In that situation, the missing item may be a dependency required by lucene++-contrib.dll or its parent module.
Microsoft states that MSVC-built applications require a compatible Visual C++ Redistributable, and that the redistributable architecture must match the application. Use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Ask the application vendor which runtime its build requires.
- Determine whether the application is x86, x64, or ARM64.
- Download the matching Microsoft package from the official page.
- Close the affected application.
- Run the redistributable installer as administrator.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed, or complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
The official direct packages include x86, x64, and ARM64.
A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows still needs x86 dependencies. Installing only the x64 runtime will not satisfy an x86 process. One documented Firebird UDR loading problem was resolved by installing the vendor-compatible Visual C++ runtime, but that does not prove every Lucene++ build uses the same runtime.
Repeating SFC and DISM while guessing which runtime or dependency is absent can be slow and inconclusive. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for related Windows issues and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, while reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.
5. Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove a DLL after installation or an update.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected application or
lucene++-contrib.dll. - Check the detected file path.
- Restore it only if it came from the legitimate vendor package and you have confirmed the detection is a false positive.
- Prefer reinstalling the complete vendor package after restoration.
- Run a security scan before launching the application again.
If the file was in an unexpected directory, had a suspicious name variation, or was not part of the application’s official package, do not restore it. Remove the threat and reinstall the parent program from a trusted source.
6. Check x86 and x64 compatibility
Architecture errors often produce messages such as:
Rank #2
- Dual USB-A & USB-C Bootable Drive – compatible with nearly all Windows PCs, laptops, and tablets (UEFI & Legacy BIOS). Works with Surface devices and all major brands.
- Fully Customizable USB – easily Add, Replace, or Upgrade any compatible bootable ISO app, installer, or utility (clear step-by-step instructions included).
- Complete Windows Repair Toolkit – includes tools to remove viruses, reset passwords, recover lost files, and fix boot errors like BOOTMGR or NTLDR missing.
- Reinstall or Upgrade Windows – perform a clean reinstall of Windows 7 (32bit and 64bit), 10, or 11 (amd64 + arm64) to restore performance and stability. (Windows license not included.). Includes Full Driver Pack – ensures hardware compatibility after installation. Automatically detects and installs drivers for most PCs.
- Premium Hardware & Reliable Support – built with high-quality flash chips for speed and longevity. TECH STORE ON provides responsive customer support within 24 hours.
- “The specified module could not be found”
- “The application was unable to start correctly”
- “The file is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
Check the application’s documentation, installer name, or executable properties. For a Firebird UDR, the package must match the architecture of the Firebird process.

If the DLL exists but still fails, inspect the full dependency chain. Possible missing dependencies include:
lucene++.dll- A compatible Visual C++ runtime
- Another vendor-supplied library
- A library with the wrong architecture
A dependency-analysis utility used by an administrator can identify which module fails to load. The important result is the missing dependency and its expected installation path, not merely the name in the original error.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Update related drivers only when the application needs them
A graphics or hardware driver is not the normal source of lucene++-contrib.dll. Update drivers only if the application’s own logs identify a driver problem or the failure began with a device-related change.
For a manual check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if an update is installed.
- Test the affected application.
Use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page when Windows cannot find a suitable driver. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the relevant package; the full version performs driver installation, and it is not a substitute for repairing the application that owns this DLL.
8. Do not use Windows Features or regsvr32 as a first repair
Windows Features may be relevant to an application that explicitly requires an optional Windows component, but enabling random features will not install lucene++-contrib.dll.
To check optional components:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review only the feature named in the application’s documentation.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
lucene++-contrib.dll is documented as a shared library, not a COM component. It normally does not need registration. Do not run:
regsvr32 lucene++-contrib.dll
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A failure from regsvr32 is therefore expected for many ordinary runtime libraries and does not repair their dependencies. Microsoft explains this behavior in its regsvr32 command reference.

SFC and DISM do not normally restore a third-party Lucene++ DLL. They are secondary checks when Windows servicing or protected system files are also malfunctioning.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the application.
Microsoft documents DISM repair guidance and the SFC command. If these commands report repairs but the application still fails, return to the parent application, dependency, and architecture checks.
What not to do
- Do not download an arbitrary
lucene++-contrib.dll. - Do not place it in
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not use a DLL from a different application or release.
- Do not mix x86 and x64 files.
- Do not run
regsvr32routinely. - Do not disable antivirus protection just to force a DLL into place.
- Do not ignore a suspicious file location or digital-signature problem.
Random DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture or version, and leave the real missing dependency unresolved. Use the affected application’s official installer or vendor package instead.
How to confirm the repair worked
The repair is successful when:
- The application starts without the loader message.
- The relevant feature opens normally.
- Firebird loads the UDR without “UDR module not loaded.”
- The application’s companion DLLs remain together in the expected directory.
- No new dependency or runtime error appears in the application logs.
If every repair fails, record the exact executable or service, its x86/x64 architecture, the complete error text, the DLL directory, the package version, and any dependency-analysis result. Give that information to the application vendor rather than replacing more files at random.
FAQ
Is lucene++-contrib.dll a Microsoft file?
No. It is an application library associated with Lucene++-based software.
Can I download only this DLL?
That is unsafe and usually incomplete. Restore the complete package that supplied the DLL.
Is IBSurgeon Lucene UDR the only application that uses it?
No. It is a documented Windows user, but custom applications and other integrations can build or bundle Lucene++ independently.
Why does Windows say a module is missing when the DLL is visible?
A required dependency may be missing, the architecture may be wrong, or the file may be corrupt.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does the DLL need registration?
Normally no. It is a shared runtime library, not ordinarily a COM server.
Should I run SFC first?
Not usually. Start by repairing the parent application and checking its dependencies. Use DISM and SFC when broader Windows corruption is suspected.
