Lumberwhack: Defend the Wild is a free-to-download mobile defense game in which Koko Kornelius, a monkey, recruits animal allies to protect the forest from lumberjacks. It combines side-scrolling action with strategy: choose allies, use their abilities, and defend trees across levels. Apple currently lists an iPhone and iPad version with optional in-app purchases; availability and store details can vary by region and change over time.
What is Lumberwhack: Defend the Wild?
Lumberwhack: Defend the Wild is a side-scroller defense game from Koloss Interactive’s original press-kit era, built around Koko Kornelius and a team of animals defending wildlife and trees from tree-cutters. Apple categorizes the current iOS listing as Strategy. The premise is cartoonish animal-versus-lumberjack conflict, not a forestry simulator or a conventional lumber game.

The official descriptions frame play around waves of lumberjack enemies, animal allies, and upgrades. Named characters and abilities on the official website include Smashback Gorilla, Punchbag Panda, and Banana Magnet. Apple describes more than 300 levels, animal abilities and upgrades, several lumberjack enemy types, achievements, Game Center support, and an unlockable survival mode. Those are publisher and storefront descriptions; they are not a substitute for firsthand gameplay testing.

The basic loop is to progress through levels, select and upgrade animal allies and skills, then use that team to stop incoming lumberjacks before they reach the forest’s trees. The side-scrolling presentation gives the defense setup a more active, character-driven feel than a purely static tower-defense board. The available descriptions establish the broad loop, but do not specify detailed mechanics such as exact unit costs, level-by-level objectives, or how each ability is controlled.

Animal allies and abilities
Animals are the player’s defensive roster, and their abilities are part of the strategy. The official site names Smashback Gorilla, Punchbag Panda, and Banana Magnet; Apple also notes upgrades. The descriptions do not provide a complete roster or full ability guide, so those details should be checked in the game itself or its current official materials.
Levels and survival mode
Apple advertises more than 300 levels and an unlockable survival mode. The level count is a product feature claim, not an independently measured statistic. The official website confirms survival mode, but the available source descriptions do not set out its rules or unlock requirements.

The developer press kit records an iOS release on 7 August 2013 and an Android release on 28 January 2014, and lists the iTunes App Store, Samsung Apps, Google Play Store, and Amazon Apps as distribution outlets. Those dates and outlets document release history; they do not confirm that an Android version or any particular storefront remains available today. The current Apple listing credits Digital Exception Sthlm AB, while the older press kit credits Koloss Interactive. The cited sources do not explain the change in company credit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Lumberwhack free?
The current Apple US listing says the game is free to download and offers optional in-app purchases. The press kit also describes the original game as free. That does not establish that every feature or item is free, nor does the historical price prove current pricing in every region or on every platform. Check the relevant store listing before downloading.
What does the listing say about the game?
Apple reproduces a TouchArcade.com review line describing the game as suitable for short sessions or longer play and rating it 8 out of 10. Apple attributes the quote to TouchArcade, not to an individual reviewer. Store ratings and review counts can change, so a live aggregate should not be treated as a fixed, dated measure of quality.
