If Windows reports “lxa1comc.dll is missing,” “The code execution cannot proceed because lxa1comc.dll was not found,” or “Error loading lxa1comc.dll,” the file is usually part of an old Lexmark printer or scanner installation. The safest repair is to remove the damaged Lexmark software and reinstall the complete package for the exact device and Windows architecture.
The 60-second answer
lxa1comc.dll is associated with Lexmark Communication System, a component used by Lexmark printer software for communication, TCP/IP ports, bidirectional communication, and local printer ports.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
It is not a normal Windows system DLL, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET component. A Lexmark package installed it, even if the file is now stored inside Windows DriverStore.
Do not download a loose copy from a DLL website or copy it into System32. That can introduce malware, install the wrong architecture, and leave the underlying Lexmark driver registration broken.

- SMALL: Compact printer fits almost anywhere (8. 7 x 14. 5 x 14. 3 inches / 222 x 368 x 363 millimeter).
Instead:
- Identify the Lexmark printer or multifunction device.
- Check whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Remove the existing Lexmark software.
- Download the complete model-specific package from Lexmark.
- Install it, restart Windows, and test printing or scanning.
What the error messages mean
The wording points to slightly different failure stages:
- “The program can’t start because lxa1comc.dll is missing from your computer.” The program requested the file and Windows could not find it in the expected installation or driver path.
- “The code execution cannot proceed because lxa1comc.dll was not found.” A Lexmark utility or related application could not load its required communication component.
- “There was a problem starting lxa1comc.dll. The specified module could not be found.” The named file may be absent, or Windows may be unable to find a dependency that the file needs.
- “Error loading lxa1comc.dll. The specified module could not be found.” A startup entry, service, or printer utility is trying to load an incomplete Lexmark installation.
- “lxa1comc.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” The file may be damaged, incompatible with the calling program, blocked by security software, or from the wrong architecture.
The filename alone cannot identify the exact printer model. Lexmark packages for devices including Z2300, Z2390, Z2320, Z1400-series, and X2600-series products have included a Communications System component, but your device may be different.
Why this happens
The most common causes are:
- Lexmark software was uninstalled or partially upgraded.
- A printer was replaced, but its old startup utility remained.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit package was installed.
- Antivirus software quarantined or deleted the file.
- The DLL exists, but another dependency is missing.
- Windows DriverStore or servicing data is damaged.
- A legacy Lexmark package is being used on a newer Windows release where only part of the old utility stack works.
A printer can sometimes continue printing while the scanning utility, status monitor, or startup component produces the DLL error.

This is the most likely solution.
1. Find the printer model
Check the label on the printer, its original documentation, or an existing printer entry:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Record the exact Lexmark model.
If the device is not listed, check Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Devices and Printers.
2. Check Windows architecture
On Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select System → About.
- Find System type.
On older Windows versions, open Control Panel → System.

Use the x86 package for 32-bit Windows and the x64 package for 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows can still require a 32-bit DLL, so do not choose a package solely because the operating system is 64-bit.

3. Remove the damaged installation
Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if the Lexmark installer or removal process instructs you to do so.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Lexmark.
- Uninstall the Lexmark printer software, scanner software, status monitor, and related utilities.
- On older Windows, open Control Panel → Programs and Features and remove the same entries.
- Restart Windows.
Do not manually delete random folders from C:WindowsSystem32 or the DriverStore. The DriverStore is managed by Windows, and its FileRepository folder names are machine-specific.
4. Install the official package
Use Lexmark’s official Drivers & Downloads search and select the exact model and Windows architecture. Download the complete printer or multifunction-device package, not a standalone DLL.
- Right-click the downloaded installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Reconnect the USB cable only when requested.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Open Printers & scanners and print a test page.
- If the device includes scanning, test the Lexmark scanning application separately.
For a currently supported device, use its current model-specific package or Lexmark’s supported Universal Print Driver. Legacy packages may target Windows 7, Vista, or XP and may not provide every old utility on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Reinstalling the exact Lexmark package remains the definitive fix for this Lexmark-specific DLL.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have quarantined the file. A quarantine event does not prove the file was harmless.

- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
lxa1comc.dllor Lexmark software. - Check the detected file path and action.
- If the file came from the official Lexmark installer, reinstall that package instead of restoring an isolated DLL.
- Run a full malware scan before allowing anything back into the system.
If you use third-party antivirus software, open its quarantine or detection history and perform the same review. If the detection remains uncertain, leave the file quarantined and obtain a fresh installer from Lexmark.
Fix 3: Repair Windows components only when Windows corruption is suspected
SFC and DISM are secondary checks here. They repair protected Windows components and the Windows component store; they do not normally recreate a third-party Lexmark DLL.
Open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Press Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run these commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Wait for each command to finish before starting the next one. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Restart Windows afterward and reinstall the Lexmark package again.
Possible results include:
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.” Windows protected files were not damaged.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.” Restart and test the Lexmark software.
- SFC found corrupt files but could not repair some of them. Review
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log, install pending Windows updates, and repeat the Lexmark package installation.
If you want an automated scan instead of repeatedly comparing DISM and SFC results, Outbyte PC Repair can show system issues in its free scan, while repair actions are performed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the official Lexmark package.
Fix 4: Check the dependency or calling application
A “specified module could not be found” message does not always mean that lxa1comc.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to load one of its dependencies.
First identify what is launching the error:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an error at the time the popup appeared.
- Record the failing application name and the path shown in the event.
Also check Task Manager → Startup apps for an obsolete Lexmark monitor or utility. If you no longer use the related printer, uninstall the Lexmark software rather than trying to preserve a leftover startup entry.
If printing works but scanning fails, reinstall the complete multifunction package instead of only the printer driver. If the error appears when an unrelated application starts, check whether a stale Lexmark startup task or service is responsible.

Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine repair
Do not run this command merely because the filename ends in .dll:
regsvr32 lxa1comc.dll
regsvr32 applies to DLLs or ActiveX controls that provide the required registration entry point, commonly DllRegisterServer. A printer communication library may not be self-registering.
If regsvr32 reports that the module could not be loaded, that can indicate a missing dependency, wrong architecture, or absent registration entry point. It does not prove that the DLL is missing. The Lexmark installer should register and configure its own components.

Afterward, install the correct Lexmark package rather than relying on the restored copy indefinitely. A full Windows reset should be a last resort, after confirming that the problem is not limited to the Lexmark installation.
Why copying the DLL is unsafe
A loose DLL download can be:
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit build.
- From a different Lexmark package.
- Modified or bundled with malware.
- Missing its required dependencies.
- Incompatible with the application requesting it.
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or the application directory can also create version conflicts. The correct repair restores the package, its services, ports, configuration, and related files together.
FAQ
Is lxa1comc.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Lexmark printer software. It may appear beneath a Windows DriverStore path, but that does not make it a protected Windows system DLL.
Is it part of Visual C++?
There is no reason to treat this filename as a Visual C++ runtime. Reinstall a Visual C++ package only if the error also names files such as MSVCP, VCRUNTIME, or api-ms-win-*.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which Lexmark printer installed it?
The filename alone cannot identify the exact model. Check installed Lexmark programs, printer entries, Event Viewer, and the path shown in the error. Then match the model through Lexmark’s official driver search.
What if the file exists?
The file may have a missing dependency, incorrect permissions, wrong architecture, or a damaged package around it. Reinstall the complete Lexmark software and inspect the failing application in Event Viewer.
Will SFC restore it?
Usually not. SFC primarily repairs protected Windows files, while lxa1comc.dll belongs to third-party Lexmark software.
What should I collect if the error remains?
Record the Windows version, system architecture, Lexmark model, complete error text, file path shown in Event Viewer, whether printing and scanning work, and whether antivirus quarantined the file. These details identify whether the remaining problem is a package mismatch, dependency failure, or obsolete startup component.
