You may see one of these messages when Windows starts an application or detects an old device:
- “The program can’t start because lxaa4_serv.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting lxaa4_serv.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading lxaa4_serv.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because lxaa4_serv.dll was not found.”
- “lxaa4_serv.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library lxaa4_serv.dll.”
The 60-second answer
lxaa4_serv.dll is associated with legacy Lexmark software, not with Windows itself. Public file records describe it as Lexmark Communication System and list it as a 32-bit file from a legacy Lexmark driver package.

The exact Lexmark printer or multifunction model has not been publicly verified. The most reliable repair is therefore to identify the old Lexmark device, remove its damaged or stale software, restart Windows, and install the correct model-specific package from Lexmark’s official support site.
Do not download this DLL from a random DLL archive or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. That can introduce malware, use the wrong architecture, and leave the actual driver installation broken.

What is lxaa4_serv.dll?
lxaa4_serv.dll is not a Windows component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET file. Public records identify it with Lexmark International and report the following metadata:
| Item | Publicly reported information |
|---|---|
| Description | Lexmark Communication System |
| Architecture | 32-bit |
| Version | 1.0.0.0 |
| Reported size | Approximately 0.66 MB |
| Likely role | Legacy Lexmark printer, scanner, or multifunction-device software |
Related LXAA4 files are described as Lexmark WIA imaging components. Some third-party records associate them with a wialx009.inf DriverStore package. That supports a scanner or imaging-driver connection, but it does not prove which exact Lexmark model installed lxaa4_serv.dll.
It also does not prove that every file with this name is genuine. File name alone is not a sufficient security check.

Why the error appears
The likely causes, in order, are:
- A Lexmark driver installation was interrupted, corrupted, or partially removed.
- An old Lexmark package is incompatible with the current Windows architecture or version.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file or one of its dependencies.
- A Lexmark device was removed but its startup, service, or driver entry remains.
- A recent update or driver change damaged the old installation.
- Windows component corruption is affecting related system operations.
- The file or its dependency was altered by malware.
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that lxaa4_serv.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a DLL that lxaa4_serv.dll needs to load.
Fix 1: Identify the Lexmark device and reinstall its official package
This is the most effective fix when you still use the printer, scanner, or multifunction device.
Find the model in Windows
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for a Lexmark device and record its exact model name.
- If it is not listed, press Windows key, type Device Manager, and open it.
- Expand Print queues, Imaging devices, Printers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a Lexmark entry or an unknown device that appeared when the error began.
If you cannot find the model, check the printer label, old installation media, the original purchase records, or the folder path shown in the error. Do not guess a model based only on the DLL name.

Remove the damaged driver
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the Lexmark device.
- Right-click the device and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
You can also remove the printer from Settings:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Lexmark printer.
- Select Remove and confirm.
Install the correct package
- Open Lexmark’s official Drivers & Downloads page manually.
- Enter the exact printer or multifunction-device model.
- Select the package matching your Windows version and system architecture.
- Choose the recommended driver package.
- Download and run the installer.
- Follow the prompts to connect or detect the device.
- Restart Windows when installation finishes.
- Print a test page or open Windows Scan to verify the device.
If the installer offers separate print, scan, and fax components, install the components you actually use. Lexmark’s software packages can include several device functions, and reinstalling only the print driver may not restore scanner support.
When driver pages list both 32-bit and 64-bit packages, choose the package matching Windows, not merely the bitness of the old DLL. A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit applications, but a legacy imaging driver may still require a complete compatible package.
Manually replacing a file inside the DriverStore is not a safe substitute for reinstalling the package. Windows manages those folders and may reject or replace manually copied files.
When Windows driver hunting means checking numerous packages and guessing which one is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation through the full version remains optional. Reinstalling the exact Lexmark package is still the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 2: Remove Lexmark software if you no longer use the device
If the error appears during startup but no Lexmark printer or scanner is present, restoring the DLL may only preserve obsolete software.
Uninstall Lexmark programs
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Lexmark.
- Select each obsolete Lexmark application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
On older Windows installations:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the Lexmark software.
- Select Uninstall.
Remove the old printer entry
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the unused Lexmark device.
- Select Remove.
Then check Device Manager for a remaining Lexmark entry and uninstall it. Do not delete random services or registry entries based only on a name. If the startup error remains, note the executable named in the complete message and investigate that host rather than deleting unrelated Windows entries.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed the DLL because the file was old, changed, or detected as suspicious. A quarantine record does not prove that the file was malicious, and its absence does not prove that the file was safe.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any Lexmark-related detection.
- Check the file path, detection name, and source.
- Restore it only if you can verify that it came from the original Lexmark installer and is trusted.
- Otherwise, leave it quarantined and reinstall the package from Lexmark.
If the installer is quarantined immediately after download, do not repeatedly restore the file. Run a full scan, obtain the package again from the official vendor, and check whether the package is intended for your exact model and Windows version.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC are useful when several Windows components are malfunctioning. They are not universal repair tools for third-party Lexmark files.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Microsoft’s supported order is DISM first, followed by SFC:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application or device again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, return to the Lexmark driver repair rather than repeating the scan. If it cannot repair some files, review the result and use Microsoft’s repair guidance before making further driver changes.
If repeated DISM and SFC runs leave you unsure which Windows files changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that shows detected issues; repair is performed by the full version and is not required for this Lexmark-specific fix. The official Lexmark installer remains the correct source for lxaa4_serv.dll.
Fix 5: Check Windows Update and compatibility
An old Lexmark package may fail after a Windows update or may not support the current operating system.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to the Lexmark support page.
- Check whether the model has a package for your Windows version.
Do not force a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit driver package. Do not combine files from different Lexmark models or versions. If Lexmark does not provide a compatible package for the device, the practical choices may be removing the obsolete software, using a supported generic Windows driver where available, or replacing the device.

Do not routinely use regsvr32
Do not start with:
regsvr32 lxaa4_serv.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no public evidence that lxaa4_serv.dll is a self-registering COM DLL. Running the command will usually fail or provide no useful repair if the file is a driver component rather than a self-registering library.
Use the Lexmark installer to place and register the components it needs. Only use regsvr32 when the software vendor specifically documents it for that exact DLL and architecture.
Avoid DLL download sites and System32 copying
A standalone DLL download can be:
- The wrong version
- The wrong architecture
- Missing required dependencies
- Modified or unsafe
- Incompatible with the rest of the Lexmark package
It may also make the error appear to change while leaving the original driver broken. Never overwrite a file in C:WindowsSystem32 or a DriverStore folder as a first-line repair.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe safe sources are the original Lexmark installer, a verified backup of the complete package, or Windows’ own driver mechanisms. If the device is no longer used, uninstalling the stale software is safer than restoring the missing file.
If the error began after a software change
System Restore can help when the failure clearly started after a driver installation, update, or software removal.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs, but it does not remove personal documents. Afterward, install the correct Lexmark package rather than relying on the restored copy if the error returns.

Frequently asked questions
Is lxaa4_serv.dll a Windows file?
No. Available public records associate it with Lexmark software. It is not identified as a Windows component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET file.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Which Lexmark printer installed it?
No exact model is publicly verified. Identify the model from Printers & scanners, Device Manager, the DLL’s surrounding folder, old installation media, or the physical device label.
Should I download lxaa4_serv.dll separately?
Normally, no. Reinstall the complete model-specific Lexmark package or remove the obsolete Lexmark software.
Is it safe to copy the file to System32?
No. That does not rebuild the driver package and can create architecture, dependency, or security problems.
Why does Windows say the specified module cannot be found?
The named DLL may be missing, or one of its required dependencies may be missing. Reinstalling the complete Lexmark package addresses both possibilities more reliably than copying one file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will SFC restore it?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files. lxaa4_serv.dll is associated with third-party Lexmark software, so the Lexmark installer is the appropriate repair source.
What if I no longer own the Lexmark device?
Uninstall the Lexmark applications and remove the old printer or imaging device. A startup error from unused software does not require restoring the DLL.
What if none of these steps identifies the cause?
Record the full error, including the executable that attempted to load the DLL, its file path, and whether the error occurs at startup or only when opening a device-related application. That information can identify the remaining host program and determine whether the problem is an obsolete Lexmark entry, a dependency failure, or a security event.
