lxa2usb1.dll is associated with older Lexmark printer, scanner, fax, or device-communication software, not with Windows itself. The safest fix is to identify the Lexmark application that calls it, then repair or reinstall the complete package from Lexmark rather than downloading the DLL separately.
What this file actually does
Public file metadata describes lxa2usb1.dll as part of “Lexmark Communication System” from Lexmark International, Inc. That association is useful, but Lexmark’s public documentation does not establish the exact printer models, package version, file size, or precise function of this DLL.

The filename suggests a USB communication component used by a Lexmark device package. It may be involved in printer communication, scanning, fax functions, or a monitoring utility. It is not a standard Windows DLL, Microsoft runtime, DirectX file, or .NET component.
The error can appear in several forms:
- “The program can’t start because lxa2usb1.DLL is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting lxa2usb1.DLL.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because lxa2usb1.dll was not found.”
- “lxa2usb1.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are commonly reported variants from file-index pages rather than Microsoft- or Lexmark-authenticated error messages. Also, “specified module could not be found” does not always mean that lxa2usb1.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a dependency required by that DLL.

Causes and symptoms
| What you notice | Most likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears when opening Lexmark scanning or printer software | Damaged or incomplete Lexmark installation | Repair or reinstall the Lexmark package |
| It started after replacing a printer | The old device package remains, or the new model has a different package | Remove old software and install the exact model package |
| It started after a Windows upgrade | An obsolete driver or utility is incompatible | Install the latest package supported for your Windows version |
| Windows Security shows the file in quarantine | Antivirus removal or a possible detection | Investigate the detection and prefer a clean reinstall |
| The file exists but Windows reports an error | Corruption, wrong architecture, or a missing dependency | Check file properties, repair the owning application, and reinstall |
| No Lexmark software is installed | Leftover startup entry, incomplete uninstall, copied program, or suspicious software | Inspect the calling program and scan the system |
| Several unrelated programs fail | Windows component corruption may be involved | Run DISM followed by SFC |
Before changing anything, note the exact application named in the error. Also record whether the issue began after a printer replacement, Windows upgrade, driver update, disk cleanup, antivirus alert, or software removal.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Lexmark package
This is the most likely solution because the DLL belongs to the application or driver package that installed it.
Identify the installed Lexmark software
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Search for Lexmark.
- Look for printer software, scan software, fax software, device monitoring software, or a communication component.
- If the error names a different application, record that name too.
If an entry has an Advanced options menu, open it and select Repair when available. Start the Lexmark utility again after the repair.
Recommended Free Tools
If the error remains:
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the Lexmark entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
Then download the package for the exact Lexmark printer or scanner model from Lexmark’s official Drivers & Downloads page. Select the correct Windows release and install the complete package, not a DLL taken from a file repository.
Reconnect the printer or scanner only when the installer asks you to do so. Some Lexmark installers expect the device to be disconnected until the communication driver has been installed.
A successful repair normally means the Lexmark application opens without the DLL message, the device appears in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, and printing or scanning works from the repaired application.

If the installer reports that the device is unsupported, use the newest package Lexmark provides for that model. An older printer may not have a current Windows 11 package. Windows Update may supply basic printing support, but scanning, faxing, monitoring, and model-specific controls can be unavailable.
Fix 2: Install the correct driver for the exact device
Do not assume that a similarly named Lexmark model uses the same software. The model printed on the device may differ from the name shown in Windows.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Note the displayed device name and, if available, its driver or manufacturer information.
- Compare that model with the package selected on Lexmark’s official support page.
If the printer is not listed:
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to search.
- If it is not found, select Add manually.
- Check the USB cable, printer power, and network connection.
- Avoid installing a driver for a different Lexmark model just because its name looks similar.
You can also inspect the device in Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Lexmark device or a device with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab to see the provider, date, and version information.
- Use Update Driver only when you have a compatible package or Windows has a suitable driver available.
- If the device remains broken, select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and run the correct Lexmark installer again.
Lexmark driver packages can include separate 32-bit and 64-bit variants. A 32-bit application may still need a 32-bit component even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Do not choose the package solely from the operating system label if the installer offers separate application architectures.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through driver versions and checking which installed drivers are stale; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the exact Lexmark package remains the definitive fix when this specific DLL belongs to that package.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus software removed the file
A legitimate driver DLL can be quarantined, but malware can also imitate a familiar filename. Do not restore an unexplained copy simply because a program requests it.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the detection involving
lxa2usb1.dll, the Lexmark folder, or the application that displayed the error. - Expand the entry and read its location and detection name.
- If the file came from an unexpected folder, leave it quarantined.
- If the file was part of a trusted Lexmark installation, reinstall the official package instead of restoring the isolated DLL.
After reviewing the detection, return to Virus & threat protection and select Scan options. Run a Full scan. If you suspect active malware, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan, which restarts the computer and scans before normal Windows processes load.
If the clean Lexmark installer immediately triggers the same detection, do not add a broad antivirus exclusion. Record the detection name and contact Lexmark or Microsoft support.

Fix 4: Check the file and its calling application
A DLL with the correct name is not necessarily the correct file. Do not copy lxa2usb1.dll from another computer or place it manually in System32 or SysWOW64.
If the error shows a path:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to that path.
- Right-click
lxa2usb1.dll. - Select Properties.
- Check the General and Details tabs.
- Note the folder, file description, publisher information, and whether Windows displays an Unblock option.
A file in a Lexmark installation directory is more consistent with the reported association than a file in a temporary folder, a random download directory, or an unfamiliar program folder. The path alone does not prove that the file is safe.
If the file is present but the program still fails, the missing item may be a dependency. The message “specified module could not be found” can refer to that dependency. Reinstalling the complete application is safer than trying to identify and replace individual DLLs.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other programs also fail
SFC and DISM are Windows repair tools, not primary repair tools for a missing third-party Lexmark DLL. Use them when multiple unrelated applications fail, Windows Update is malfunctioning, or Windows reports damaged system components.
Save your work, then:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Run the commands separately. Do not close the window while either scan is running.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart Windows and test the Lexmark application. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the Lexmark installation remains the more likely problem. If it cannot repair some files, restart the computer and run the commands again, then repair or reinstall the Lexmark package.

Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of identifying system problems easier by showing what its scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version. It is not required, and it cannot replace reinstalling the Lexmark program that owns lxa2usb1.dll.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows change, or software update.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem started.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can reverse drivers, registry settings, system files, and installed programs while preserving personal files. It does not guarantee that a missing Lexmark package will return, so reinstall the correct package afterward if the error remains.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not run:
regsvr32 lxa2usb1.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM components. There is no evidence that lxa2usb1.dll is a self-registering COM DLL.
A missing or damaged device-communication DLL is normally restored by repairing or reinstalling the application or driver that owns it. Registering an ordinary runtime or driver DLL will not recreate missing companion files or dependencies.
Why downloading the DLL separately is unsafe
Avoid third-party DLL download sites and random file attachments. A standalone file may have the wrong architecture, a different build, a misleadingly similar name, altered contents, or no compatible companion driver. It can also leave the damaged Lexmark installation and its startup references unchanged.
Do not copy the file into both System32 and SysWOW64. Windows chooses DLL loading locations according to the calling process and installation method, and forcing files into those folders can create additional conflicts.
Best Value
The safe source is the complete Lexmark package for the exact device model and Windows version. Microsoft Update may provide a basic printer driver, but it may not restore Lexmark’s scanning, fax, monitoring, or device-specific features.

Collect these details before contacting Lexmark or the application publisher:
- The exact Lexmark printer or scanner model
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 and its system architecture
- The application that displays the message
- The complete error text
- The full path shown for
lxa2usb1.dll - Whether the file exists in that location
- Whether Windows Security quarantined it
- Any other missing DLL named in the message
- What changed immediately before the problem began
If no Lexmark software is installed, inspect the parent executable that references the DLL and run a malware scan. The reference may be a leftover startup entry from an incomplete uninstall, a copied program folder, or an unrelated suspicious application.
