When updating or reinstalling manually, it is easy to hunt through several driver packages and guess which old component is responsible. 2. Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–15 minutes

If no Lexmark software or hardware has ever been installed, treat the file reference as suspicious. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan and identify the executable that is requesting it.
4. Remove stale devices and reinstall through Device Manager
Time needed: 15–25 minutes
Use this step when the error began after replacing a printer, changing a USB cable, upgrading Windows, or moving the device to another computer.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Print queues, Printers, and Imaging devices.
- Look for old Lexmark entries, warning icons, or duplicate devices.
- Right-click the clearly identified obsolete Lexmark device and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers to remove the driver package, select that option only when you are sure the package belongs to the obsolete device.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers and inspect only entries clearly associated with the failed Lexmark installation.

5. Run DISM and System File Checker for broader Windows damage
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus restart time
Use these commands when several unrelated Windows files are failing, Windows features behave incorrectly, or the problem began after broader system corruption. They are not expected to restore a third-party Lexmark DLL that was never part of Windows.
- Install pending updates under Settings > Windows Update.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows when both commands have completed.
- Reinstall the Lexmark package if the DLL error remains.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling the Lexmark software.

System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove recently installed drivers or applications. Afterward, install the correct Lexmark package rather than restoring a standalone DLL.

Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 lxa3usb1.dll
