If the dialog appears during startup rather than when launching a visible program, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Startup apps, and look for Lexmark entries. Do not delete an entry yet. Its name can help identify the parent application.
Reinstall from Lexmark
- Open Lexmark’s official Drivers & Downloads page.
- Search by the exact printer or scanner model, including any model suffix.
- Select the package intended for your Windows version and device.
- Download the full driver or software package from Lexmark.
- If the existing Lexmark software has an uninstall option, remove it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the downloaded Lexmark installer.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator if the normal launch fails.
- Follow the device-connection instructions. Connect the printer by USB only when the installer requests it.
- Restart again if the installer asks you to do so.
- Open the Lexmark scanning or printer utility and test the operation that previously failed.
Success means the application opens without the DLL message and the printer or scanner can perform a basic task. For a scanner, test a preview or scan. For a printer, print a Windows test page.

- Review recent entries for the Lexmark application or

- Press
Win+R. - Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic if the Lexmark package expects the service to start with Windows.
- If Service status is stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart the Lexmark application.
If WIA will not start, note the error shown by Services and reinstall the Lexmark package. Do not attempt to solve a service failure by downloading a standalone DLL.

- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, and Cameras.
- Look for a yellow warning icon or an unknown device.
- Right-click the relevant Lexmark device and choose Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Use Update driver only with a driver obtained from Lexmark, or uninstall the device and then run the Lexmark installer again.
- Restart Windows and test the device.
Fix 4: Match the package architecture
Available catalogued metadata identifies lxa5drs.dll as a 32-bit Win32 file. That does not mean it belongs in a Windows system folder. A 32-bit Lexmark application can use a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows, but a native 64-bit application cannot use that DLL as its native library.

Fix 5: Remove stale Lexmark startup entries
If you no longer own the Lexmark device, the error may come from leftover software rather than an active installation.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall obsolete Lexmark utilities.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Task Manager > Startup apps.
- Disable a clearly identified Lexmark startup item that remains.
- Press
Win+R, typetaskschd.msc, and press Enter. - Check Task Scheduler Library for an unmistakable Lexmark task.
- Disable or remove it only after confirming it belongs to the old Lexmark software.
- Restart and check whether the message has stopped.
Do not use registry-cleaning utilities or delete random registry entries. If the program is still needed, reinstall it instead of disabling its startup components.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other files are failing
Because lxa5drs.dll appears to be a third-party Lexmark file, Windows repair commands are a secondary step. They are appropriate when Windows itself has broader corruption, built-in applications are also failing, or other protected system files report errors.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Lexmark application again.

Use System Restore if the problem began immediately after a driver update, failed installation, cleanup operation, or software removal and a suitable restore point exists.

- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the drivers and applications that may be rolled back.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system settings, drivers, and installed programs but does not normally remove personal files. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain the process.

Random DLL download sites are a poor repair source. The file may be modified, unsigned, the wrong historical build, the wrong architecture, or missing the dependencies that caused the error. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also create a second problem while leaving the Lexmark installation broken.
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It applies to DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer; an ordinary private runtime DLL may not provide one. If you run:
regsvr32 "C:pathtolxa5drs.dll"
and receive an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found, that does not prove the file is corrupt. It usually means registration is not applicable. Do not continue trying different system folders. Reinstall the parent Lexmark package instead.

- Your Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition
