Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, record:
- Which program shows the error: a printer utility, Windows print dialog, Microsoft Store application, or another program.
- When it started: after Windows Update, a printer installation, a driver update, antivirus activity, disk cleanup, or an incomplete uninstall.
- Whether Windows works normally elsewhere: one affected printer program points toward that program or its driver; several failing Windows features point toward system corruption.
- Your Windows architecture: open Settings > System > About and check System type. A 64-bit Windows installation can run both 64-bit and 32-bit applications, but they use different system locations and compatible components.
- Whether the file exists: check
%windir%System32. On 64-bit Windows, a corresponding 32-bit component may also be associated with%windir%SysWOW64.
Do not replace a missing file based only on its name. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that the named DLL exists but one of its dependencies is missing or damaged.

What this DLL is and where it belongs
Windows.Devices.Printers.Extensions.dll belongs to the Windows Runtime namespace documented by Microsoft as Windows.Devices.Printers.Extensions. That namespace provides components for printer-task configuration, printer notifications, and related 3D-print workflows. Microsoft documents types including PrintExtensionContext, PrintNotificationEventDetails, and PrintTaskConfiguration in this API area.

It is not a printer driver. A printer driver communicates with the device, while printer extensions add configuration, notification, or vendor-facing print functionality. A printer manufacturer may distribute an extension with a driver package or setup application, but the Windows API component itself is part of Windows.

The normal location is under the Windows system directories, especially %windir%System32. Exact versions, sizes, hashes, and build details vary by Windows release and edition. Do not use a file copied from another computer unless the Windows build, architecture, servicing state, signature, and dependencies all match.
There is no standalone official Microsoft download page for this DLL. The safe sources are Windows servicing, Windows Update, matching Windows installation media, or the printer software’s official installer.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
This is the quickest repair when the component is missing because of an incomplete update or a recently corrected Windows servicing issue.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates, including optional printer or driver updates if they are clearly related to the affected device.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately require a restart.
- Open the same printer utility or application again.
If the error disappears, no manual DLL replacement is needed. If Windows Update reports an error, or the file is still missing, continue with the component repair commands.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft’s supported sequence is DISM first, followed by System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run SFC:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands complete.
- Retry the program that reported the DLL error.
A successful DISM run means the Windows image was repaired or found to be healthy. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired damaged files, or found corruption it could not repair.

If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart and run the same sequence once more. If DISM cannot find the repair files, use matching Windows installation media or another supported repair source. Microsoft describes the /Source and /LimitAccess options in its DISM repair guidance. The source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture.

Fix 3: Repair the printer or vendor application
Use this path when the error began after installing, removing, or updating a printer, printer control panel, or vendor utility.
First remove the affected printer:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Click Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
Then reinstall the printer through Windows:
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to detect the printer.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Print a test page.
If the printer requires a manufacturer utility or extension, download that package only from the printer manufacturer’s official support page. Reinstall the complete package rather than copying a DLL into the program directory.
Microsoft recommends starting with Windows Update for printer drivers. Its printer-driver guidance explains the supported installation route.
If the error belongs to a separate printer control application, uninstall that application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart, and reinstall its current official package. This is the definitive fix when the vendor application itself is incomplete or damaged.
Fix 4: Update or roll back the printer driver
A driver update can introduce a compatibility problem, while an old driver can fail after a Windows update.

To update through Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on how the printer appears.
- Right-click the affected printer.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
To roll back a recent driver:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant printer category.
- Right-click the printer and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Restart and test the printer utility again.
If the rollback button is unavailable, use Uninstall Device only when you have the correct replacement driver ready. Do not select options that remove unrelated devices.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a damaged or falsely detected system component. Do not restore it automatically.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- If the DLL appears, verify that its path is a Windows system directory, such as
%windir%System32. - Confirm that the file has a valid Microsoft digital signature through File Explorer > Properties > Digital Signatures.
- If its provenance is uncertain, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.
If the file repeatedly disappears, run a full scan and investigate malware, third-party cleanup software, storage problems, or recurring antivirus detections. Microsoft explains quarantine review and restoration in its Protection History instructions.
Fix 6: Check architecture and missing dependencies
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may require the 32-bit system component, while a 64-bit application requires the 64-bit component. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32 or a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64.

Check the application’s architecture through its documentation or by asking the software vendor. Also check whether the error occurs only in one program. If Windows printing works normally but one vendor utility fails, the utility or one of its dependencies is the more likely fault.

Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because the message names a DLL. There is no verified connection between this filename and those redistributables. Install a runtime only when the affected application’s official requirements identify it.
Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
This command is often suggested for DLL errors:
regsvr32 Windows.Devices.Printers.Extensions.dll
Do not run it as a standard repair. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft does not state that every DLL should be registered, and this Windows Runtime or COM-related component may produce misleading errors about entry points or architecture.
The correct repair is Windows servicing, printer-package repair, or application repair, depending on where the failure occurs.

If both commands complete successfully but the message remains:
- Open Event Viewer and inspect Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System around the time of the failure.
- Check Reliability Monitor by searching for View reliability history from Start.
- Identify the exact application or service named in the failure.
- Repair or reinstall that application from its official installer.
- If the problem started recently, open Win+R, type
rstrui.exe, and press Enter. - Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs before confirming System Restore.

If Windows remains broadly unstable, use matching installation media for a supported repair or perform a Windows repair installation. Back up important data first. A clean reinstall is a last resort, not the first response to one missing system component.

Is windows.devices.printers.extensions.dll a virus?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows system DLL. A copy in an application folder, a user profile, or a temporary directory deserves additional scrutiny. Check its path and Microsoft digital signature before trusting it.

Can I download the DLL from a DLL website?
No. Random downloads can contain malware or the wrong version and architecture, and they often leave the damaged dependency or printer installation untouched. Repair Windows through Microsoft servicing or reinstall the affected printer package from its official source.
Why does the message say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
The Windows loader may be unable to find a dependency required by the named DLL. The failure can therefore come from a damaged Windows component, incompatible architecture, or broken printer software.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as a first response. This filename identifies a Windows printer-extension component, and no verified relationship ties it to those redistributables.
What if DISM and SFC both succeed?
Focus on the calling program. Use Event Viewer, Reliability Monitor, and the application’s logs to identify whether a printer utility, driver package, or other application is making the failing call, then repair that software.
Can I copy the file from another Windows PC?
Avoid it. Windows build, architecture, signature, servicing metadata, and dependencies must match. Windows Update, DISM, SFC, installation media, or the official printer package are safer sources.
