lxaa1res.dll belongs to the software installed for a Lexmark printer or scanner. It appears alongside other Lexmark scanning components, including files associated with WIA scanner support.

The filename alone cannot identify the exact Lexmark model. It has been associated with more than one Lexmark printer and scanner package, so first determine:
- The Lexmark device connected to the computer
- The application named in the error
- Whether the problem affects printing, scanning, or both

lxaa1res.dll is not verified as a Microsoft Windows DLL. There is also no reliable evidence connecting it to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a game runtime. Reinstalling those packages is therefore not the correct first repair.

Fix lxaa1res.dll errors in order
1. Identify the Lexmark device and affected program
Do not begin by searching for the filename alone. Look for the exact program named in the error, such as a Lexmark scan utility, printer assistant, or imaging application.
- Write down the full error message.
- Note the application name shown in the title bar or message.
- Check the printer or scanner label for its model name and number.
- Open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the Lexmark device if it appears.
- Check whether Windows can print a test page and whether scanning fails separately.
If the device is not listed, open Control Panel → View devices and printers. Also check Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps for Lexmark entries.

The model matters because the correct installer, scan utility, supported Windows release, and driver architecture can vary. Public file listings may show conflicting version, size, and 32-bit or 64-bit information. Do not select a package based on an unofficial DLL listing.
2. Reinstall the complete Lexmark package
This is the most likely solution for a missing, damaged, or incompatible lxaa1res.dll.
- Open a browser and go to Lexmark’s official Drivers & Downloads portal.
- Search for the exact printer or scanner model.
- Select your Windows version and system architecture when prompted.
- Download the recommended full driver package and any required scan utility.
- Close Lexmark programs.
- If the installer requests it, disconnect the USB cable or power-cycle the device.
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Lexmark software.
- Select the relevant package, choose Uninstall, and follow the prompts only if the installer or Lexmark instructions require removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Reconnect or re-add the printer or scanner when prompted.
- Restart Windows again if the installer requests it.
Test the device with the Lexmark scan application. If that fails, open Start, search for Windows Scan, and test from there. You can also try Windows Fax and Scan if it is available.

If the official installer reports that the package is unsupported, return to the model page and check whether a newer Windows-compatible package exists. Do not infer compatibility from the presence of a file with the same name.

3. Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may have removed or quarantined a Lexmark file after an update or a false detection.
- Open Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.

- Look for an entry involving

4. Repair the Lexmark application
If the Lexmark program is still installed and Windows offers a repair option, try that before removing it.

- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the Lexmark application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test scanning after the repair finishes.
For traditional desktop software:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Right-click the Lexmark program.
- Select Repair or Change.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows if requested.
If Repair is unavailable or does not change the error, uninstall the damaged Lexmark package and install the current model-specific package from Lexmark.
5. Verify the Windows Image Acquisition service
Lexmark scanning commonly relies on Windows Image Acquisition, also called WIA. A stopped service can prevent scanning, although restarting it will not recreate a missing Lexmark DLL.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic or Automatic (Delayed Start) if available.
- If the service is stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart the computer and test scanning.
If WIA will not start, note the error shown in the service properties. Check related dependency services and then repair Windows components in the next step.
6. Reinstall or refresh the device in Device Manager
This can remove a stale device association after a Windows upgrade or failed driver installation.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Imaging devices, and Cameras.
- Locate the Lexmark device or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click it and choose Uninstall device.
- If Windows displays a checkbox to remove the driver, select it only when you intend to reinstall the complete Lexmark package.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current Lexmark package as administrator.
- Reconnect or re-add the device.
Do not use Device Manager to guess at a generic driver when a model-specific Lexmark package is available. A generic printer driver may restore printing but not the Lexmark scanning utility.
7. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when several Windows applications are malfunctioning, WIA will not start, or the issue began with broader system corruption. They do not normally recreate a third-party Lexmark DLL that was never part of Windows.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the complete Lexmark package and test scanning again.
If DISM reports that it cannot complete, restart Windows and run the command again. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and test. If it cannot repair some files, review the result and proceed with the Lexmark reinstall rather than copying a DLL manually.

If the message appears during every startup but you no longer use the Lexmark device, the remaining startup entry may be calling software that was partly removed.

- Search for Lexmark.
- Uninstall unused Lexmark programs.
- Restart Windows.
- If an entry remains, open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features and remove it there.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an obsolete Lexmark startup item if it remains after the software has been removed.
Do not delete random DLL files or registry entries to stop the message. If the problem began immediately after a driver change and a restore point exists, System Restore can roll back system files and settings without normally affecting personal files.

Avoid DLL download sites and automated DLL replacement tools that provide an isolated copy. A downloaded file may have the wrong architecture, version, language resource, dependencies, or malicious modifications. It may also be placed in the wrong directory and leave the damaged Lexmark installation untouched.
Do not copy lxaa1res.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 merely because a website recommends it. The correct location depends on the Lexmark package, and copying a mismatched file can create new loading errors.
Use the complete installer from Lexmark instead. The installer supplies the related scan components and places them where the application expects them.
Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this file
Do not treat every DLL as a self-registering library. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. lxaa1res.dll is described as a local scan resource associated with driver software, not as a documented COM or ActiveX component.
Running this command:
regsvr32 lxaa1res.dll
may produce “DllRegisterServer was not found.” That does not repair the missing file or its dependencies. Reinstall the complete Lexmark package instead.

32-bit and 64-bit considerations
Windows may be 64-bit while a printer or scanner package contains 32-bit components. Do not replace lxaa1res.dll based on a third-party listing that claims a particular architecture.
