displaysurface.dll is an Adobe application file, not a Windows system DLL. If displaysurface.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, repair the Adobe installation that owns it instead of downloading a replacement into System32.
Adobe crash reports place this file inside Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects folders, including paths such as:

The safest fix is to close Adobe applications, restart Windows, and reinstall the affected Premiere Pro or After Effects version through the Creative Cloud desktop app. This restores DisplaySurface.dll together with the matching Adobe files it depends on.
What the displaysurface.dll error means
DisplaySurface.dll belongs to the Adobe application that installed it. Public Adobe crash reports show it loaded by Premiere Pro and After Effects, with its version matching surrounding Adobe modules.

The file may be 64-bit in supported Adobe builds. Third-party file listings show several version and size combinations, but Adobe does not publish a complete standalone version table. Do not select a replacement based only on a filename, version number, or file size.
Common displaysurface.dll messages
| Message type | What it usually indicates | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
displaysurface.dll is missing or was not found |
The Adobe installation is incomplete, damaged, or the file was quarantined | Repair or reinstall Adobe |
Error loading displaysurface.dll |
The file or a companion Adobe component cannot load | Reinstall the matching Adobe build |
The procedure entry point ... could not be located |
Windows or Adobe components do not expose the API the file expects | Update Windows, then repair Adobe |
| Adobe crashes during startup or display initialization | A damaged install, plug-in, or graphics driver may be involved | Reset Adobe settings and update the GPU driver |
An entry-point error is different from a missing-file error. For example, Adobe reports have referenced D3D12SerializeVersionedRootSignature and GetSystemDpiForProcess. These are Windows APIs supplied by D3D12.dll and User32.dll. If DisplaySurface.dll exists but one of these entry points is unavailable, copying the same DLL again will not add the missing Windows API.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Adobe application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
This is the most likely solution for a missing or damaged DisplaySurface.dll.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Save your work and close Premiere Pro, After Effects, Creative Cloud, and other Adobe processes.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop application.
- Select Apps.
- Find Premiere Pro or After Effects, depending on which program shows the error.
- Select the More actions button beside the application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the prompts. If Creative Cloud offers to keep preferences, keeping them is reasonable for a first attempt.
- Restart Windows again.
- Open Creative Cloud and install the affected Adobe application again.
- Launch the program from the Start menu.
If the application starts normally and no displaysurface.dll message appears, the repair worked. Do not copy files from another Adobe version into the new installation.
If the uninstall or installation fails, repair Creative Cloud itself. Close all Adobe programs, run the official Creative Cloud uninstaller, choose Repair when offered, and restart Windows. If repair does not work, uninstall Creative Cloud, install it again from Adobe, and then reinstall Premiere Pro or After Effects.
For persistent installation corruption, use Adobe’s official Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. Remove only the affected Adobe installation unless you deliberately intend to clean other Adobe products.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus removed the file
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software can quarantine an Adobe file after an update or incomplete installation.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
DisplaySurface.dllor an Adobe installation folder. - If the Adobe installation came from Creative Cloud and the detection is clearly a quarantine event, follow your security software’s restore process.
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall the Adobe application even if you restored the file.
Do not restore a file solely because its name is DisplaySurface.dll. Check that it is inside the expected Adobe folder and that the Adobe installation is legitimate. A filename alone cannot establish that a file is safe.
If antivirus repeatedly removes the file, do not repeatedly restore it. Update the security product, review its detection details, and contact its vendor if necessary. Reinstalling Adobe after resolving the quarantine is safer than keeping a partially restored installation.
Fix 3: Reset Adobe preferences, cache, and plug-ins
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Use this fix when the DLL exists but Premiere Pro crashes or fails during startup.
For Premiere Pro:
- Hold Alt, Shift, or Ctrl+Alt+Shift while starting Premiere Pro.
- Keep the keys pressed until the reset dialog appears.
- Reset preferences.
- Clear the media cache.
- Reset the plug-in cache if that option is shown.
- Start Premiere Pro without third-party video plug-ins.
If the application opens after the reset, re-enable plug-ins one at a time. A third-party plug-in can cause a startup crash even when DisplaySurface.dll is intact.
You can also test the Adobe application by right-clicking its shortcut, selecting Properties, opening Compatibility, and checking whether compatibility mode is enabled. Disable compatibility mode unless Adobe specifically requires it. Use Run as administrator only as a diagnostic test, not as a substitute for repairing the installation.

Fix 4: Update Windows and check Adobe compatibility
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, excluding download time
An entry-point error can occur when the Windows build is too old for the Adobe build or when Windows components are damaged.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Press Windows + R, type
winver, and press Enter. - Record the Windows edition and build number.
- Confirm that the Adobe version you are installing supports that Windows release.
The Windows API D3D12SerializeVersionedRootSignature requires a sufficiently modern Windows 10 build, while GetSystemDpiForProcess requires Windows 10 version 1803 or later. These requirements explain why an Adobe DLL can be present but still fail to load.

Fix 5: Update or reinstall the graphics driver
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use this step when Adobe crashes during display initialization, GPU acceleration, playback, or rendering. It is less likely to fix a genuinely missing file.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Note whether the adapter is AMD, Intel, or NVIDIA.
- Right-click the adapter and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- Check the GPU manufacturer’s official support page for a newer driver.
- If the current driver is already installed but Adobe still crashes, return to Device Manager, right-click the adapter, select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the current manufacturer driver.
Use a clean installation option if the manufacturer’s installer provides one. Afterward, launch Adobe with third-party plug-ins disabled and test a project.

When manually hunting through hardware pages, it is easy to install the wrong driver or miss an outdated component. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that shows which drivers are outdated; driver installation through the full version is optional, and reinstalling Adobe remains the definitive fix when its own files are damaged.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use Windows repair commands when several applications have DLL or entry-point errors, not only Adobe.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Try Adobe again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command repairs Adobe’s private application DLL directly, so reinstall Adobe afterward if the error remains.
Running these commands repeatedly without recording what changed makes troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that identifies repair issues; repairs through the full version are optional, and the Adobe reinstall is still the definitive fix for a damaged Adobe installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not download, copy, or register displaysurface.dll
Random DLL download pages can provide malware, the wrong Adobe build, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the surrounding modules. Even a clean replacement may leave the installation broken.
Avoid these actions:
- Do not download
DisplaySurface.dllfrom a DLL archive. - Do not copy it to
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not copy it from another PC or another Adobe version.
- Do not install both x86 and x64 Visual C++ packages unless the error specifically names a Visual C++ runtime.
- Do not install DirectX to solve an Adobe-owned DLL error unless a separate, verified DirectX error is displayed.
regsvr32 is also generally inappropriate. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no established evidence that this Adobe rendering or support module is a self-registering COM component, so running regsvr32 displaysurface.dll is unlikely to help.
Likely causes and the correct fix
The causes are best handled in this order:
- Incomplete Adobe installation: repair or reinstall Premiere Pro or After Effects.
- Mixed Adobe versions: remove the affected application and install one coherent build.
- Antivirus quarantine: verify the detection, restore only a legitimate file, then repair Adobe.
- Outdated Windows: install updates and confirm compatibility with the Adobe version.
- GPU driver problems: update or cleanly reinstall the AMD, Intel, or NVIDIA driver.
- Windows component corruption: run DISM followed by SFC.
- A separate runtime error: install Visual C++ only when the displayed message names
VCRUNTIME,MSVCP, orapi-ms-win-crt.
System Restore should be considered a last-resort rollback, not a first-line DLL repair. A game launcher’s file verification feature is irrelevant unless that launcher, rather than Adobe, is reporting the error.

FAQ
Is displaysurface.dll part of Windows?
No. Reports place it inside Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects installation folders. It should not be placed in a Windows system directory.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as a general fix. Install Visual C++ only when the actual message names a Visual C++ runtime. A DisplaySurface.dll error is primarily an Adobe installation or compatibility problem.
Why is the file present but Windows says an entry point is missing?
The DLL can be present while Windows lacks the API it expects, or while Adobe files come from incompatible versions. Update Windows and reinstall the matching Adobe build.
Does the file work with 32-bit Adobe?
The available public evidence points to 64-bit Adobe builds and does not establish a supported 32-bit edition. Do not mix 32-bit and 64-bit files.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I fix the problem with regsvr32?
Generally no. This is an application-private Adobe DLL, not an established self-registering COM component.
What is the safest permanent fix?
Remove the affected Adobe application and reinstall it through Creative Cloud. That restores DisplaySurface.dll and its matching dependencies together.
