lxaa3res.dll is usually a Lexmark scanning component, not a Windows system file. If Windows says lxaa3res.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or was not found, repair the Lexmark printer or scanner package that installed it instead of downloading the DLL by itself.
What lxaa3res.dll does
Public file metadata describes lxaa3res.dll as Local Scan Resource, associated with Lexmark International, Inc. It appears alongside other LXAA3 scan components, including service, USB, driver-resource, and mini-driver files.

That grouping points to a Lexmark WIA or TWAIN scanning installation. WIA is Windows Image Acquisition, while TWAIN is a scanning interface used by many desktop scan applications. The file is therefore best treated as a resource used by a Lexmark scanner driver or scan utility.
It is not known to be part of Windows, Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a general Microsoft runtime. Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or a random application folder.

The filename alone cannot identify the exact Lexmark printer or multifunction device. Several model-specific packages can contain related LXAA3 files, so the correct repair depends on the hardware installed on your PC.
Fix lxaa3res.dll errors
Work through these fixes in order. Start with the Lexmark software repair, because that restores the DLL together with its dependencies, registration, and device configuration.
1. Identify the Lexmark device and failing application
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
First, capture the complete error. Note whether it appears:
- When Windows starts
- When opening a scan application
- When pressing the scan button
- When connecting a Lexmark printer or scanner
- When launching an old Lexmark utility
Also note the application name shown in the error dialog. A startup reference to an old Lexmark utility suggests orphaned software. An error during scanning points more directly to the WIA, TWAIN, USB, or network scan driver.
Check the installed hardware:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Record the exact Lexmark model.
- Select the device and check whether Windows reports a driver or connection problem.
Then check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, and, if present, Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Lexmark device, a warning icon, or an unknown scanner.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Read the General and Driver tabs without removing the device yet.
Finally, open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and search for Lexmark. Record the names of scan utilities, printer software, and device-specific packages.
2. Repair or reinstall the official Lexmark package
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the most likely fix for lxaa3res.dll. The installer should place the resource DLL beside the correct Lexmark components and configure the scanner interface properly.

- Search for
Lexmark. - Select the package associated with the affected printer or scanner.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair or Modify if the installer provides that option.
- Restart Windows.
- Test scanning again.

- If multiple Lexmark entries exist, remove only software belonging to the affected device. Do not remove unrelated devices unless you have identified them.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Lexmark’s official Drivers & downloads support page manually.
- Search using the exact printer or multifunction model.
- Select the package listed for your Windows version and system architecture.
- Download the complete printer or scan package, not an isolated DLL.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Follow the connection instructions. Connect the USB cable only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after setup completes.
If your model has separate scan options, install the WIA or TWAIN package required by your scan application. Some Lexmark models use a scan utility, while others expose scanning through Windows or a TWAIN-compatible application.
A successful repair should remove the loader error and make the Lexmark device appear normally in Printers & scanners or the relevant Device Manager category. If printing works but scanning does not, the print driver may be installed while the scan component is still missing.
3. Check Windows Update and refresh the device driver
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A Windows upgrade or driver update can leave a scanner registered with an incomplete or incompatible component.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager again.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Printers.
- Right-click the Lexmark device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, use the exact package from the Lexmark model page rather than forcing a driver for a similar printer. A package for the wrong model can install printing support while leaving WIA or TWAIN scanning broken.
A 32-bit and 64-bit package are not interchangeable. Use Settings → System → About → System type to check whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit, then select the package matching the operating system and the device’s supported software. Do not replace a 64-bit installation with a loose 32-bit DLL.

When several devices and drivers need checking, manually comparing package versions can be slow and error-prone. 4. Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Antivirus software may quarantine a legitimate file after a scan, especially in an old driver package. It may also detect a tampered or unofficial copy.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
lxaa3res.dllor the Lexmark installer. - Check the file location and detection details.
- Restore it only if it came from a Lexmark installer you obtained from the official support source and the security software identifies it as trusted.
- Restart Windows and test the scanner.
If the origin is unclear, do not create an exclusion or restore the file. Uninstall the old package and reinstall it from Lexmark instead. Then run a full Microsoft Defender scan or a scan provided by your organization’s security software.
5. Repair Windows components only if other Windows files are also failing
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They do not normally recreate a missing third-party Lexmark DLL, so use them when Windows has broader corruption, failed updates, damaged built-in tools, or multiple unrelated system errors.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the permission prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Lexmark scan application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the system again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, restart and run the commands once more, then return to the Lexmark package reinstall rather than expecting SFC to supply lxaa3res.dll.
Repeating system scans without knowing which Windows component changed can waste time. It is not required, and reinstalling the Lexmark software remains the correct fix for a missing third-party file.
6. Check dependencies named in the complete error
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A message saying “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean that lxaa3res.dll itself is absent. Windows can show that wording when a dependency required by the DLL is missing.

Look at the complete error for names such as:
MSVCP...dllVCRUNTIME...dllMFC...dll
Only install or repair the official Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable when the full error names one of those runtime files or the Lexmark installer explicitly requires it. Install the architecture required by the application, which may differ from the architecture of Windows.

Do not install a runtime merely because lxaa3res.dll is missing. There is no reliable evidence that this Lexmark scan resource is itself a Visual C++ component.
7. Use System Restore only after a recent driver change
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
System Restore is reasonable when scanning worked until a driver installation, software update, or Windows change and a restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Let Windows restart and complete the process.
Restore does not replace identifying the correct Lexmark package. If the error returns, install the current compatible package for the exact model.

Why DLL download sites and regsvr32 are poor fixes
Downloading lxaa3res.dll from a random DLL website is risky because the file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, be an altered version, or lack the other Lexmark components it depends on. Even a matching filename will not repair an incomplete WIA or TWAIN installation.
regsvr32 is also not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for COM or OLE libraries that provide the required self-registration functions. A scan resource or driver DLL may not be self-registering, so commands such as these are generally inappropriate:
regsvr32 lxaa3res.dll
Microsoft documents that regsvr32 errors can also result from missing dependencies and from using the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit version of the tool. Reinstall the complete Lexmark package instead of forcing registration.

There is no Windows Feature that normally restores this file. Enabling optional features will not recreate a Lexmark scan resource.

If the Lexmark device is obsolete
Search Lexmark support using the exact model. If no package supports your version of Windows, try Windows’ built-in scanner support only if the device is compatible and appears in Printers & scanners.
If the old Lexmark utility is the only program requesting lxaa3res.dll, uninstalling that utility may be safer than keeping a broken startup entry. If you still need scanning and no compatible driver exists, replacing the device may be the practical solution.
