“fdproxy.dll” error messages you may see
Windows may display one of these messages when an application starts:
- “The program can’t start because fdproxy.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because fdproxy.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting fdproxy.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading fdproxy.dll.”
- “fdproxy.dll could not be loaded.”
- “fdproxy.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The 60-second answer
fdproxy.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component named Function Discovery Proxy Dll. It belongs to Windows Function Discovery, which helps Windows discover networked computers, printers, and other devices and services.
Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. Install pending Windows updates, then run DISM followed by System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish. If the error appears only in one application, repair or reinstall that application after repairing Windows.

What fdproxy.dll does
Function Discovery is a Windows technology used to discover devices and services on a network. It can be involved with networked computers, printers, and UPnP or Web Services on Devices equipment. Microsoft documents the related API family in its Function Discovery reference.
fdproxy.dll is a Windows proxy/stub component used with COM interfaces and Function Discovery-related services. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, game-specific library, or normal hardware driver.
Related Windows services include:
- Function Discovery Provider Host (
fdPHost) - Function Discovery Resource Publication (
FDResPub)
These services support parts of network discovery, but a missing or damaged fdproxy.dll does not automatically mean that either service is the root cause.
Where fdproxy.dll should be located
On a normal Windows installation, check these locations:
Recommended Free Tools
C:WindowsSystem32fdproxy.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64fdproxy.dll
On 64-bit Windows:
System32contains the 64-bit Windows system files.SysWOW64contains the 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications.
The exact version and file size depend on the Windows release and build. There is no single version number that applies to every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
A file with the same name elsewhere is not automatically genuine. Pay particular attention to copies inside a game folder, a temporary directory, a download folder, or an unfamiliar application directory.
What “specified module could not be found” really means
The Windows loader reports the DLL named in the error, but that does not always mean the named file itself is missing.
The message can indicate that:
fdproxy.dllis absent.- The file is damaged.
- Windows cannot access the component store needed to restore it.
- A dependency used by
fdproxy.dllcannot be loaded. - The application is using an incorrect DLL search path.
- A 32-bit application is encountering an architecture mismatch.
- Antivirus software quarantined a file.
- The application installation is damaged.
If fdproxy.dll is already present in the correct Windows directory, do not immediately copy another file over it. Repair Windows first, then inspect the application’s event or crash details for the actual dependency that failed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix fdproxy.dll in the safest order
1. Install Windows updates and restart
Windows servicing is the safest source for a missing or corrupted Windows DLL.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Launch the affected application again.
If the error started immediately after a Windows update, note that timing. You may later need to uninstall that update or use System Restore rather than repeatedly reinstalling the application. Microsoft lists the available recovery choices in its Windows recovery options.
2. Repair the Windows component store with DISM
DISM repairs the Windows component source that System File Checker uses. Run it before SFC.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Keep the Command Prompt window open if DISM reports an error.
The scan can appear to pause at a percentage for a while. Do not close the window just because progress is slow. When DISM completes successfully, continue with SFC.
If Windows Update itself is broken, DISM may be unable to obtain repair files. Microsoft documents using matching installation media as a repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a known-good, matching Windows repair source. Do not use an arbitrary folder or a source from a different Windows edition.
Manually finding the correct component source and interpreting repeated DISM errors can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for this Windows repair.
3. Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run SFC in the same administrator Command Prompt.
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact. Continue with the application and dependency checks below.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test the application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: restart, run DISM again, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, use a matching repair source or an in-place Windows repair.
- Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart Windows and run the command again from an elevated Command Prompt.
Microsoft’s complete procedure is documented in its System File Checker and DISM instructions.
4. Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate system file, or it can detect a malicious file that merely uses the name fdproxy.dll.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows Security. - Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries mentioning
fdproxy.dll. - Expand an entry to see its path and detection details.
Do not restore the file solely because an application wants it. Restore it only when the file is in the expected Windows location and its Microsoft digital signature and other trust indicators are valid. If the file was inside an application folder, reinstall that application from its official installer instead of restoring it blindly.
Microsoft explains quarantine and restore decisions in its guide to Protection History. After resolving the system repair, run a full Microsoft Defender scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
5. Repair the application if only one program fails
If Windows works normally and only one application reports fdproxy.dll, the application may have a damaged installation or an incorrect private DLL path. The error dialog naming the file does not prove that the application owns it.
Try the application’s own repair option first:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
- Otherwise uninstall and reinstall the application using the developer’s official installer.
For a game, open its launcher and use Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files, depending on the launcher. Do not place a downloaded fdproxy.dll inside the game folder.

If reinstalling the application changes nothing, return to DISM and SFC. The application may simply be exposing a Windows component problem.
6. Check the correct architecture
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may use the SysWOW64 copy, while 64-bit Windows components use System32.
Do not:
- Copy the 64-bit file into
SysWOW64. - Copy the 32-bit file into
System32. - Install both files from an unverified source.
- Replace a Windows-serviced file manually.
If the message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows,” suspect a damaged or mismatched copy. Move unofficial copies out of application directories, then run DISM and SFC so Windows can restore the correct component.
7. Check Function Discovery services only when network discovery is also broken
A DLL startup error is not normally fixed by changing a service, but these checks can help when the same computer also cannot discover network devices.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Function Discovery Provider Host.
- Open it and check whether its startup type is appropriate for your network-discovery needs.
- Check Function Discovery Resource Publication as well.
- Start a stopped service only if you need network discovery and Windows permits it.
- Retry the application.
Do not disable security software or change unrelated services as a first response to this DLL error.

8. Update drivers only when the evidence points to a device problem
fdproxy.dll is not a device driver. Update drivers if the error began alongside a network adapter, printer, storage, or graphics problem, or if Device Manager shows a warning.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Network adapters or Printers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and review the Device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If Windows cannot identify which of many installed drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan showing what it identifies; driver installation is performed by the full version, and it is optional. Use the hardware manufacturer’s official driver when you already know the affected device.
9. Use System Restore or an in-place repair
Use System Restore when the problem began after a recent driver, update, or system change and a restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Search for
Create a restore point. - Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can remove recently installed applications, drivers, updates, and settings.

Usually, no.
fdproxy.dll has exports associated with COM proxy/stub registration, including DllRegisterServer, but Microsoft does not provide routine regsvr32 use as the repair procedure for this Windows component. Registration cannot recreate a missing file or repair corruption in the component store.
Use regsvr32 only when Microsoft Support or a specific COM-registration diagnosis tells you to. Running the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit version can create additional confusion without fixing the loader problem.
How to verify a genuine copy
Check all of the following:
- The file is located in
C:WindowsSystem32or, where appropriate,C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Confirm the signer is Microsoft.
- Open the signature details and confirm Windows reports that the signature is valid.
- Compare the file’s location and details with the Windows build rather than expecting one universal version.
A matching filename alone proves nothing. If Windows cannot validate the file, let DISM and SFC restore it instead of trying to authenticate or repair an unofficial copy manually.

FAQ
Is fdproxy.dll malware?
The legitimate fdproxy.dll is a Microsoft Windows system DLL. A file with that name outside the normal Windows component paths may be legitimate only in special circumstances, so verify its location and Microsoft signature and run a full Defender scan when anything looks suspicious.
Is fdproxy.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a game?
No. It is associated with Windows Function Discovery. An application or game may report the error while indirectly loading a Windows component, but that does not make the DLL an application-owned runtime.
Which Windows versions contain it?
It is present in supported Windows installations that include the relevant Function Discovery infrastructure. File versions vary by Windows release and build, so do not use an old version list as a universal target.
Should I download fdproxy.dll manually?
No. Microsoft does not publish a standalone fdproxy.dll redistributable. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or an official in-place Windows repair.
What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
Repair Windows first. “Specified module could not be found” may refer to a dependency rather than fdproxy.dll itself. If the issue affects one application, inspect its crash details and repair that application.
Should I enable Windows Features?
Not as a general fix. Windows Features can repair or add optional Windows components, but randomly enabling features will not normally replace a damaged fdproxy.dll. Use DISM and SFC unless a specific feature is missing.
When is a clean Windows reinstall necessary?
Only after Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, and an in-place repair fail, or when malware and severe disk corruption make the installation untrustworthy. Back up personal data before taking that step.
