Amanita Design has announced Machinarium 2, a sequel to its 2009 puzzle adventure Machinarium, and it has a Steam wishlist page. No release date has been given. The announcement was made on October 8, 2026, and the details below come from Kotaku’s report on that day, so they are attributed to Kotaku rather than presented as direct statements from the studio.
What Machinarium 2 is
Machinarium 2 is a direct sequel to Machinarium, the wordless puzzle adventure that Amanita Design released in 2009. It brings back the original’s two leads, Josef and Berta, and it is being developed by Amanita Design, the same studio behind the first game.

Kotaku quotes the studio’s social media announcement as reading: “Seventeen years later… the time has come for Machinarium 2.” The count is simply the gap between the original’s 2009 release and the 2026 announcement.
The story picks up outside the city
According to Kotaku, the sequel continues after Josef and Berta leave Machinarium behind. The two crash-land in the Barrens, a lush, hidden valley. The new setting is the main departure from the first game’s city-bound world.

Two robot tribes facing a power shortage
Kotaku describes two robot tribes living in the valley. One occupies an elevated monastery, and the other lives in the valley below. Both are described as facing a power shortage, which is the situation the protagonists are drawn into. Kotaku does not say how the shortage is resolved or what role either tribe plays in the wider plot, so those questions remain open until the game is shown in more detail.
How it plays
Kotaku reports that the sequel is built around two playable characters, not one. The structure is the most distinctive change from the original, which followed a single protagonist.

Switching between Josef and Berta
Players can switch between Josef and Berta at will. Both characters are playable, and the puzzles are designed around that switch rather than around a single avatar.
Solving puzzles together
The two characters cooperate to solve puzzles. Kotaku’s account does not describe the specific mechanics of cooperation, such as whether certain obstacles require both characters in one place or whether one character’s abilities unlock the other’s path.

Communicating without words
Instead of dialogue, the characters communicate through pictographic thought bubbles. This continues the series’ approach: Kotaku describes the original Machinarium as largely wordless, with hand-drawn art and animation, and the sequel’s wordless presentation is consistent with that description.
Release date, platforms and what is confirmed
The announcement gives no release date. Kotaku’s report, published October 8, 2026, states that no date had been announced at that point and points readers to a Steam wishlist page. The table below separates what has been reported from what has not.
