Madden NFL 26 Franchise Mode combines playing through an NFL season with managing a team and its coaching staff. EA’s announced focus is coach progression, staff abilities and weekly opponent preparation; it also describes changes to scouting, weather and presentation. Cloud Franchise cross-play is documented for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but not for every platform on which the game launched.
What is Franchise Mode?
Franchise is Madden’s season-long team and coaching mode. You can take control of a real NFL coach or create one, make trades and shape how your team plays. EA frames Madden NFL 26’s version around the weekly work of a head coach: preparing for an opponent, developing coaches and staff, and adapting strategy.

What changed in Madden NFL 26 Franchise Mode?
Coach archetypes and progression
EA’s detailed Franchise deep dive names three coach archetypes: Offensive Guru, Defensive Genius and Development Wizard. Archetype affects a created coach’s starting abilities and progression path. Created coaches begin at level 1 and can advance to level 50 by earning Coach XP, principally through goals. EA also says existing coaches receive archetypes and abilities tailored to their real-life counterparts.

There is a discrepancy in EA’s materials: its current overview says there are four new coach archetypes, while the detailed deep dive names three. The sources do not establish the identity of a fourth, so the named archetypes are the clearest description available.
Gameday and Season Abilities
EA’s July 2025 deep dive announced 46 Gameday Abilities at launch—22 offensive and 24 defensive—and 28 Season Abilities at launch. Gameday Abilities are intended to affect on-field matchups; Season Abilities focus on off-field progression, scouting and staff building. These are launch counts announced by EA, not a verified count of what remains in the live game in October 2026.
Weekly preparation and Play Sheets
EA says you can review scouting reports and customize a game plan for each opponent. Play Sheets add plays to your playbook, and the available sheets are tied to coach progression. EA also describes CPU teams as game-planning against you. Its current Franchise feature page highlights Weekly Strategy and Play Sheets, but the announcements do not independently establish how effective the plans are in matches.
Staff abilities
Coordinators and trainers can also develop abilities. According to EA, you can level staff or spend Staff Points to unlock abilities, shaping the staff around your preferred approach. This makes staff development part of the same progression loop as planning and coaching, rather than only a roster-management detail.

Drafting, scouting and player retirement
EA says it adjusted draft valuation for several positions, including making teams more willing to select running backs early, and added more varied prospect types. It also describes changes to retirement logic intended to reduce early retirement among productive veterans. These are design goals announced by EA, not independently verified comparisons with Madden NFL 25.
EA’s official materials reviewed for this feature do not establish the current rules for custom or editable draft classes, so this breakdown cannot confirm whether or how those classes can be changed.
Weather, defensive strategy and presentation
EA describes Real-Time Coaching AI features including defensive disguise, delayed safety rotations, pre-play front adjustments and timed blitz packages. It also says changing precipitation and wind can affect visibility, movement, footing, kicking and throwing during some games. Those are EA’s feature claims; their practical impact has not been independently tested here.
For broadcast presentation, EA’s overview describes halftime shows, weekly recaps and custom broadcast packages for Sunday, Monday and Thursday primetime games.

Can friends on different platforms play Franchise together?
EA documents Cloud Franchise cross-play for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its FAQ describes the feature as a live beta and says it requires an EA account, an internet connection and current updates. Beta status and platform service conditions may affect availability, so check EA’s Madden NFL 26 FAQ for the latest requirements.
Cross-play support for Cloud Franchise is narrower than the game’s launch platform list. Madden NFL 26 launched on August 14, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Amazon Luna and PC; EA’s cross-play documentation names only PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
What platforms support Madden NFL 26?
EA announced the August 14, 2025 launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Amazon Luna and PC. Platform availability for the game should not be confused with Cloud Franchise cross-play eligibility: EA’s documented cross-play group is PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
