What reviewers criticize
Repetition is the most consistent concern in the supplied reviews. RPG Site critic Junior Miyai found the fights repetitive and the combat basic, and also objected to the back-and-forth between the academy and dungeons. The Metacritic review page likewise surfaces a strongly negative assessment of combat and dungeon design. Players looking for complex encounters or a consistently brisk exploration loop should weigh those criticisms carefully.
RPG Site’s PS5 review
Writing on July 26, 2025, Miyai scored the PS5 version 7/10. The review’s overall stance is qualified rather than dismissive: it sees potential for players drawn especially to dungeon crawling or anime comedy, but considers the launch price high for the experience. What kind of game is it?
You play as Fia, an aspiring Great Mage who enrolls at the Ancient Magic Academy. The publisher describes the game as a single-player dungeon-crawling RPG. Its loop pairs randomly generated dungeon exploration and battles with academy assignments, help quests, school activities, cooking, and equipment synthesis. The academy interludes are central to the structure, not just a framing device. If you enjoy returning to a hub to handle activities and interact with the setting between dungeon trips, that rhythm may be part of the appeal. If you would rather stay focused on exploration and combat, the repeated transitions criticized by RPG Site may become a drawback.

Is it worth playing?
- Consider it if the academy premise, colorful cast, humor, and a classic-feeling dungeon-crawler structure appeal to you.
- Be cautious if you want intricate combat, varied encounters, or a dungeon loop with little downtime between runs.
- Use the review score as context, not a guarantee: the 69 Metascore is a dated snapshot of 12 PS5 critic reviews, and individual responses vary.
In short, critics describe a charming but uneven RPG. Its character appeal may carry players who connect with the tone; its repetitive fights and basic combat are more likely to disappoint players who prioritize mechanical variety.

The western console release arrived on July 29, 2025, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. The Steam version followed on March 25, 2026. The publisher lists both physical and digital formats for console, while Nintendo lists a digital Switch file size of 1.7 GB. Mado Monogatari is a series of primarily first-person dungeon-crawling RPGs that began on MSX and PC-98 in the 1980s and 1990s. Nintendo notes that Puyo Puyo is a spinoff of the series. That background is useful context, but the publisher presents Fia and the Wondrous Academy as its own academy adventure; the available descriptions do not suggest that newcomers need to know earlier entries.
