The set later received a broader card-and-mechanics preview at PAX East; the two reveals were separate. The tabletop set launched June 13, 2025, and is also available on Magic: The Gathering Arena.
What the first look actually showed
Square Enix and Wizards of the Coast announced the crossover in October 2024. The February 18, 2025 announcement was an early look at its art direction and product lineup, not the full card-and-mechanics presentation. At PAX East in May, Wizards shared additional cards and mechanics. Square Enix said the set would draw on every mainline FINAL FANTASY game; Wizards’ product page describes the scope as sixteen games, through FINAL FANTASY XVI.
The visual approach was the headline of the February reveal. Wizards described 55 legendary characters appearing across the set’s special treatments. The announcement highlighted three distinct treatments:
- Borderless Character Cards: character-focused artwork presented without the usual card border.
- Borderless Woodblock Cards: summon illustrations inspired by traditional Japanese woodblock paintings.
- Through the Ages: FINAL FANTASY artwork applied to existing Magic cards, collected on a bonus sheet.
Wizards’ collecting guide lists 309 cards in the main set and 64 cards on the Through the Ages sheet. These are different counts: the bonus sheet is not part of the stated 309-card main-set total.

How the crossover is organized
The set is a tentpole booster release that adapts characters, items, and moments from all sixteen mainline FINAL FANTASY games into Magic. Its four preconstructed Commander decks each center on a different entry: FINAL FANTASY VI, FINAL FANTASY VII, FINAL FANTASY X, and FINAL FANTASY XIV. Wizards’ collecting guide says each deck contains 25 cards new to Magic.
That distinction matters when choosing a product. Boosters are randomized packs for opening and collecting; the Commander decks are assembled, ready-to-play multiplayer decks. A Starter Kit offers a separate way in, with two ready-to-play decks and a play guide.

- 3-6 Uncommon Cards
- 3-5 Common Cards
Which FINAL FANTASY product fits your goal?
| Product | What it is for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Play Booster | Opening randomized packs and collecting cards from the set. | Contents are randomized; it is not a complete deck. |
| Collector Booster | Opening packs aimed at special treatments and collector-focused contents. | It does not guarantee any particular character or chase card. |
| Commander deck | Playing multiplayer Commander with a preconstructed deck themed around VI, VII, X, or XIV. | Each deck includes 25 cards new to Magic, according to Wizards’ collecting guide. |
| Starter Kit | Getting started with two ready-to-play decks. | Includes a play guide; unlike a booster, it provides decks rather than randomized packs. |
| Bundle | A packaged product option for set collectors. | Wizards lists it among the physical products; check the product listing for its contents. |
The product lineup also includes a Gift Bundle and a Collector’s Edition version of the Commander decks. Wizards’ 2025 collecting guide listed launch MSRPs of $6.99 for a Play Booster, $37.99 for a Collector Booster, $69.99 for a Commander deck, $149.99 for a Collector’s Edition Commander deck, $69.99 for a Bundle, $89.99 for a Gift Bundle, and $19.99 for a Starter Kit. These are historical launch MSRPs, not current prices or guarantees of availability.
What the rare Chocobo disclosure means
Wizards says the set includes a serialized Traveling Chocobo card and that only 77 English Collector Boosters contain one. That is a disclosure about the limited serialized versions, not a realistic expectation for an individual pack. Wizards also says non-serialized versions are mechanically identical, so the serialized treatment is a collecting distinction rather than a gameplay advantage.
