Mafia III: Definitive Edition is not a ground-up remake. The 2020 release is the original Mafia III bundled with all three story expansions and two bonus packs. 2K described it as a re-introduction, unlike the first Mafia remake, which was explicitly built from the ground up.
A separate October 2026 update changed the current-generation picture: the Definitive Edition became available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements, while Steam received a quality-of-life patch. Those newer platform changes should not be confused with what the 2020 Definitive Edition package itself contained.

In practical terms, someone asking “Is Definitive Edition different from the original?” usually wants to know whether it is a remake. It is not. Someone asking what they receive when buying it is asking about the complete-content bundle. Someone on a new console is asking about the separate 2026 technical release.

Exactly what the 2020 Definitive Edition includes
The Steam product description identifies six components. The base game is joined by three story expansions and two bonus packs:
The main game
The package contains the original Mafia III campaign. “Definitive” does not replace that campaign with a newly rebuilt version; it places the original game in a complete-edition package.
Faster, Baby!
This is one of the three included story DLC releases. It is part of the package rather than a separate purchase for a Definitive Edition owner.

The second named story expansion is included in the same way. The edition listing treats it as story DLC, not as a cosmetic add-on.
Sign of the Times
The third story expansion completes the campaign-DLC portion of the bundle.
Family Kick-Back Pack
This bonus pack is included alongside the story expansions. It is distinct from the Family Kick-Back content that accompanied certain original launch editions as pre-order material.

The second bonus pack is also included. Together, these two packs are the bonus-content portion of the Definitive Edition.

Therefore, “all DLC” is accurate when it refers to the three named story expansions and the two named bonus packs listed for this edition. It does not mean that every physical extra ever sold with a collector’s package is reproduced in the digital game bundle.
What did not change: this is not the kind of remake 2K described for the first game
2K’s 2020 announcement called Mafia III: Definitive Edition a “re-introduction.” In the same announcement, 2K described the first Mafia remake as “built-from-the-ground-up.” That distinction is the clearest evidence for how to classify the release.
The 2020 Definitive Edition should be understood as a complete edition of the existing game, not as a new production that rebuilds its systems, performances, environments or animations from scratch. The available product descriptions establish the bundled content, but they do not establish a comprehensive visual overhaul, redesigned missions, rewritten story or new animation set. It would be misleading to promise those changes simply because the word “Definitive” appears in the title.
This also explains why comparisons that describe the 2020 edition as a remaster can confuse buyers. “Remaster” is sometimes used casually for any later release, but the documented change here is the contents of the package. The later 2026 console announcement is where the documented frame-rate and technical improvements appear.

How the original purchase editions differed
The original game was sold in several tiers. Those tiers matter when you are working out what an older copy already included, but they should not be mistaken for separate Definitive Edition upgrades.

The practical difference is ownership history. A Standard Edition owner may have started with only the base game and launch bonuses. A Digital Deluxe owner had the Season Pass. Collector’s and Deep Cuts buyers paid for physical items in addition to game content. The 2020 Definitive Edition reorganized the playable content into one package; it did not recreate every physical collector item.
What happened to existing owners in 2020?
At launch in 2020, 2K said existing owners on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam would receive the Definitive Edition upgrade at no additional cost. That was a historical launch policy covering those platforms.
It should not be read as a permanent promise about every current store account, disc, region or platform generation. Store entitlements can depend on the account and platform version you own, and the 2026 current-generation release has its own eligibility rules. If you are checking an old purchase today, verify the edition shown in your platform library rather than assuming that every copy automatically produces every newer version.

In October 2026, 2K announced PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Mafia III: Definitive Edition. The announcement specifically cites 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements. These are changes associated with the new console versions, not proof that the 2020 package was a rebuilt remake.
PlayStation upgrade terms
The announcement says that PlayStation 4 physical or digital owners are eligible for the PlayStation 5 digital version. It also says that saves from the PlayStation 4 version do not transfer to the corresponding new version. The announcement does not establish a universal cross-generation save migration, so plan to begin again on PS5 unless your platform account presents a separate, explicitly supported mechanism.
Xbox upgrade terms
Xbox One digital owners are described as eligible for the Xbox Series X|S digital version. Xbox One physical owners are excluded from the upgrade described in the announcement. As with PlayStation, Xbox One saves do not transfer to the corresponding new version.

Steam’s quality-of-life update
Steam did not receive a new console generation, but the announcement lists a quality-of-life update. Its stated areas include mission-progression blockers, crashes, achievement tracking, NPC and companion behavior, and other gameplay, stability, visual and interface issues. Those categories describe the announced fixes and improvements; they are not a substitute for independent testing of frame rates or image quality.

Which version makes sense for different players?
You own only the original base game
The main reason to move to the Definitive Edition is content completeness. You gain the three story expansions and both named bonus packs in one package. The 2020 owner-upgrade policy covered existing PS4, Xbox One and Steam owners at launch, but current entitlement screens are the authority for an older account today.
You bought Digital Deluxe or another Season Pass edition
Your original purchase already included the Season Pass, so the playable story content may overlap heavily with what the Definitive Edition lists. The value of the later label is the consolidated edition identity rather than a new campaign. Check which add-ons your account already owns before paying for duplicate content.
You want the collector physical items
The Definitive Edition game bundle is not a replacement for the Collector’s Edition art book, replica dog tags, coasters, art prints or vinyl records, and it does not reproduce the Deep Cuts Edition turntable and memorabilia. Those are physical-edition differences.
You are moving from PS4 to PS5
The 2026 announcement describes a PS5 digital upgrade for both PS4 physical and digital owners, with 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements. It also says PS4 saves do not transfer, so treat the move as a new save on the current-generation version.

You are moving from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S
Xbox One digital owners are included in the announced digital upgrade terms. Xbox One physical owners are excluded from those stated terms. In either case, Xbox One saves do not transfer to the new version.
You play on Steam
The 2026 quality-of-life update is the relevant change. Its announced scope covers blockers, crashes, achievements, NPC and companion behavior, and several stability, visual and interface issues. There is no need to describe Steam as receiving a new console-generation edition; it received an update to the PC experience.
Common misconceptions to avoid
- “Definitive” means remake. The documented 2020 release is a re-introduction with bundled content, not a ground-up rebuild.
- The 2020 package and 2026 console release are the same change. The former is primarily a content bundle; the latter adds current-generation technical improvements and a 60 FPS target on the announced consoles.
- Every original physical edition is reproduced. Collector memorabilia, records and the Deep Cuts turntable are separate physical extras.
- Every owner gets every upgrade automatically. The 2020 no-cost upgrade statement was made for PS4, Xbox One and Steam at launch. The 2026 terms distinguish digital and physical Xbox ownership and do not promise save transfer.
- “All DLC” means unlisted future content. The documented bundle contains the three named story expansions and two named bonus packs. Do not extend that phrase beyond the listed items.
Buying or upgrading: a practical checklist
- Identify your platform and generation. Separate PS4/Xbox One/Steam ownership from PS5 or Xbox Series X|S access.
- Check your original edition. Standard, Digital Deluxe, Collector’s and Deep Cuts purchases had different contents, especially the Season Pass and physical items.
- List the content you already own. Confirm whether the three story expansions and two bonus packs are already attached to your account.
- For a 2026 console move, verify eligibility. PS4 physical and digital owners are described as eligible for the PS5 digital version; Xbox One digital owners are described as eligible for the Xbox Series digital version, while Xbox One physical owners are excluded from the announced terms.
- Back up expectations about saves. The announced PS5 and Xbox Series versions do not import PS4 or Xbox One saves, so keep the old installation if you want to continue an old-generation playthrough.
- Separate game content from collector merchandise. If the listing matters to you because of a map, art book, records, turntable or other memorabilia, confirm that you are looking at the appropriate physical edition rather than only the Definitive Edition game package.
- Read the platform listing before purchase. Edition names can appear on more than one generation, and the 2026 upgrade terms are platform-specific.
Verdict: what actually changed?
The 2020 Mafia III: Definitive Edition changed the ownership proposition more than the underlying game. It gathered the base game, three story DLC releases and two bonus packs into one complete package, and 2K described existing PS4, Xbox One and Steam owners as receiving that upgrade at no cost at launch. It did not receive the kind of ground-up remake treatment associated with the first Mafia remake.
