That means a PS5 player with a DualSense controller can expect the game to use those controller channels in some form. PS5 Pro optimization
The same listing marks the game as PS5 Pro optimized. This is a platform-store designation, not a published specification of a Pro-only resolution mode, frame-rate mode, ray-tracing feature, or image-quality setting. The official material does not say what visual or performance changes the optimization delivers compared with the standard PS5.

That matters if you are comparing a new purchase with an older standard copy: the current-generation product is intended to be the complete package rather than the campaign alone.

How the free upgrade works
2K says the new versions are free for qualifying owners of Mafia III: Definitive Edition, Mafia: Trilogy, or Mafia: The Omerta Collection. Qualification is tied to the edition and ownership record, so an older save file alone does not prove that an account owns an eligible product.
PS4 digital owners
- Confirm that the PlayStation account owns an eligible digital PS4 edition: Definitive Edition, Mafia: Trilogy, or The Omerta Collection.
- For purchases made before October 8, 2026, open the game’s product page or your game library while signed into that purchasing account.
- Select the PS5 version offered at no charge and add it to the library, then download it to the PS5 console.
- Keep the account that owns the qualifying purchase signed in when launching the upgraded version.
2K specifically distinguishes a digital purchase from access obtained through a PlayStation Plus monthly game. Monthly-game access does not count as a digital purchase for this upgrade route. If the product is present only because of a subscription entitlement, do not assume the PS5 edition will be free.
PS4 physical-disc owners
- Verify that the disc is an eligible PS4 copy of one of the qualifying editions and that the purchase predates October 8, 2026.
- Use the PS5 console’s game or store page to download the PS5 digital version offered under the upgrade.
- Insert the original PS4 disc whenever you want to play the downloaded PS5 version; 2K says the disc is required to retain access.
- Keep the disc and the account used for the upgrade together. A download without the ownership check does not turn the product into an unrestricted digital license.
The disc requirement is particularly important when a household has more than one account or when the physical game is sold after claiming the download. Check the exact entitlement shown on the account before disposing of or trading the disc.

Xbox One owners
- For a qualifying Mafia: Trilogy or The Omerta Collection purchase, open the Xbox library under the account that owns the collection.
- Locate the Series X|S edition and select the download option supplied by the library.
- For a qualifying Mafia III: Definitive Edition purchase, find the free Series X|S version through the Xbox Store listing.
- Install the edition marked for Xbox Series X|S and launch it from the owning account or the console’s configured home-account arrangement.
2K says purchases made on or after October 8, 2026 include the cross-generation edition. That statement concerns the purchase entitlement, not a promise that every older account automatically qualifies. If the Series X|S version is not shown as free, check the edition, account, region, and purchase history before buying it again.
Upgrade checklist before you start
- Identify whether your original copy is Definitive Edition, Trilogy, or The Omerta Collection.
- Check whether the purchase was digital, physical, or subscription-based.
- Confirm the purchasing account and the account currently signed into the console.
- For a physical PS4 copy, make sure you still have the disc available for every play session.
- Do not delete the previous-generation installation until you have confirmed that the new entitlement appears.
Save files and achievements: the limitation returning players need to know
2K explicitly says that existing saves and achievements do not transfer from PS4 to PS5 or from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S. Your previous-generation progress therefore cannot be treated as a continuation of the same profile on the current-generation edition.
This affects more than campaign completion. A returning player should expect to rebuild mission progress, collectibles, upgrades, and other game-state records in the new version. Trophies or achievements earned on the old edition also do not carry across according to 2K’s support guidance, so the current-generation release can require earning them again.
Before deleting the old installation, take any screenshots or notes you want to retain and verify that the new version launches correctly. Cloud storage can preserve the old save for the old edition, but it does not convert that file into a transferable PS5 or Series X|S save.

Choose PS5 when DualSense matters
PS5 is the more clearly documented choice for players who value controller-specific features. The store listing names DualSense vibration and trigger effects, and it identifies PS5 Pro optimization for owners of that console. Those are the only platform-specific features officially attached to the PlayStation listing in the reviewed material.

Choose Xbox Series X|S when HDR10 and Xbox ownership fit your setup
The Xbox listing names HDR10 and covers the Series X|S family. If your display and existing library are organized around Xbox, the listed HDR support and library-based upgrade routes may make that ecosystem the simpler fit. The listing does not establish a visual-quality advantage over PS5.
Do not choose on an assumed resolution winner
There is no official numeric resolution comparison to support a claim that PS5, Series X, or Series S is sharper. There is likewise no independent result here proving that one version has steadier frame pacing. A decision based on those points would be speculation rather than a documented difference.
Consider your ownership history first
If you already own an eligible PS4 or Xbox One edition, the upgrade rules may matter more than the feature labels.
