The company named Tony Zhao Head of Gaming Investments and said the unit would back promising games and gaming infrastructure. It did not disclose how much capital was allocated to the venture arm.
What Magic Ventures was announced to do
Magic Eden’s July 12, 2022 announcement described Magic Ventures as a venture arm focused on Web3 gaming. The initiative accompanied an expansion of Eden Games, Magic Eden’s gaming division, through hires and marketplace partnerships. The stated investment remit covered game developers and gaming infrastructure. Magic Eden’s launch announcement framed the effort as support for the growth of Web3 gaming.
Contemporaneous reporting by The Block also described the unit as an investment arm for game developers and infrastructure builders. Magic Eden co-founder and CEO Jack Lu said the company intended to “deepen our relationships with both gamers and game developers alike to champion the future of games on the blockchain.” That statement described the company’s ambition at launch, not an independent assessment of the venture’s likely impact.
Who led the gaming investments?
Magic Eden named Tony Zhao Head of Gaming Investments. The Block reported that Zhao previously worked at Tencent Games, where his work included game investment, studio acquisition and strategic partnerships.
