The set launched in 2025, so this is a guide to how its mechanics work—not an upcoming-set preview.
What is Aetherdrift?
Aetherdrift is a Magic set built around the Ghirapur Grand Prix, a race across three planes. Ten teams compete for the Aetherspark, with distinct rides and two-color gameplay styles. The story was written by K. Arsenault Rivera. Wizards’ Legends of Aetherdrift feature introduces the competitors, while the official product page describes the set and its products.
The racing concept is more than a setting: Speed tracks a player’s progress toward a cap, and Vehicles, Mounts, crew, saddle, and Pilots put the means of racing directly into play. That correspondence is why the mechanics make the theme especially legible at the table.
How does Speed work in Aetherdrift?
Speed is tracked separately for each player, on a scale from 0 to 4. When you first control a permanent with the “Start Your Engines!” ability, your speed becomes 1 immediately as a state-based action. As Matt Tabak puts it in Wizards’ Aetherdrift mechanics guide, “The first time in a game you control a permanent with start your engines!, your speed becomes 1.”

After your speed reaches 1 or higher, you can increase it by 1 once during each of your turns when one or more opponents lose life during that turn. Losing life multiple times in the same turn does not raise your speed more than once that turn. Speed cannot exceed 4.
What does “max speed” mean?
Max speed means speed 4. An ability labelled “Max speed” applies only while your speed is 4; reaching that number does not mean every ability on the card becomes active, only those with the relevant condition. The exact timing and effects are determined by each card’s text.
What are the other Aetherdrift mechanics?
Exhaust: a one-time activated ability
Exhaust is a keyword that marks an activated ability you may activate only once. It gives a card a limited-use burst, but the ability’s own text controls its cost, timing, and effect. Check the card for those details rather than assuming all Exhaust abilities work alike. The official release notes cover the rules terminology.

Vehicles and crew
A Vehicle begins as an artifact, not a creature. Its crew ability lets you tap other untapped creatures whose total power meets or exceeds its crew number. When the ability resolves, the Vehicle becomes an artifact creature until end of turn. It cannot crew itself, but a Vehicle that has become a creature can crew a different Vehicle.
Mounts and saddle
Saddle works similarly: tap other untapped creatures with total power at least equal to the Mount’s saddle number. You may activate saddle only as a sorcery. Once the ability resolves, the Mount is saddled until end of turn. Some Mounts have effects that trigger when they attack while saddled, so check the individual card for what saddling enables.
Pilots
Pilots can crew Vehicles and saddle Mounts as though their power were 2 greater. That bonus applies to those two actions; it does not change the creature’s printed power for other purposes.

Cycling
Cycling lets you pay a card’s cycling cost, discard it, and draw a replacement card. Some cards have additional abilities that trigger when they are cycled. It can turn a card that is not useful in the current situation into a chance to draw something else.
Energy in the Living Energy Commander deck
The Living Energy Commander release also uses energy counters. Energy is not mana, and counters persist across steps, phases, and turns; the release notes explain the rules for cards that use it. Energy is relevant to that Commander product, not a substitute for the set’s central Speed mechanic.
Why do the mechanics fit a racing set?
- Speed creates progression: players start at 1 after engaging with “Start Your Engines!” and can build toward a clear cap of 4.
- Vehicles and Mounts supply the rides: crew and saddle turn other creatures’ power into a way to activate the set’s transport.
- Pilots make the roster matter: their extra effective power for crew and saddle connects the creatures to the vehicles they operate.
- Exhaust and Cycling add tactical choices: one is a limited-use ability; the other trades a card for a draw, sometimes with an additional cycling effect.
These are thematic observations, not a claim that every card or game plays out like a race. The strongest link is mechanical: Speed, rides, and the creatures that crew or saddle them all point toward the same premise.

Which Aetherdrift product suits your play?
Wizards lists Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Commander decks, a Bundle, a Finish Line Bundle, and a Prerelease Pack. The following comparison focuses on the two product types most directly suited to trying the set in play; launch-era prices are historical U.S. MSRPs, not current quotes.
| Product | Best fit | What to know | Historical U.S. MSRP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Play Booster | Aetherdrift Draft or Sealed | Wizards says cards opened from Play Boosters can be used in Aetherdrift Draft and Sealed; contents are randomized and do not guarantee a particular card. | $5.49 at launch in 2025; not a current price. |
| Commander deck | Ready-made Commander play | A preconstructed deck is the direct option if you want a Commander product rather than packs to open. | $44.99 at launch in 2025; not a current price. |
The figures above come from Wizards’ January 2025 collecting article. Current inventory, prices, and event availability can vary by retailer and location. Wizards’ current product page also lists a serialized Aetherspark headliner of 500 cards; that is a set-collecting detail, not a promise about what any booster contains.
