Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY brings characters, creatures and stories from across the mainline Final Fantasy games into a playable Magic crossover. Its tabletop release was June 13, 2025, and the set is also available on MTG Arena. The pairing makes sense on paper: both series build memorable fantasy worlds around distinctive characters, powerful summons and iconic objects, then give those elements room to shape strategy. That is an editorial fit, not a claim that every fan will enjoy the result.

What is Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY?

It is an officially licensed Universes Beyond collaboration developed by Wizards of the Coast and Square Enix. The set brings Final Fantasy characters and moments into Magic’s tabletop game and digital play on MTG Arena. Square Enix’s June 2025 announcement framed the collaboration as spanning each main Final Fantasy game released up to that point, from the original through Final Fantasy XVI; Wizards’ current product page describes the set as drawing from sixteen mainline games.

Wizards’ 2025 collecting guide lists 309 cards in the main FIN set. That total is for the main set, not the separate Final Fantasy Commander (FIC) and Through the Ages (FCA) card groups.

Why the two series fit together

Final Fantasy has spent decades creating distinct worlds, characters, monsters, summons and signature items. Magic turns characters and fantasy concepts into cards that interact through rules and strategy. The crossover can therefore do more than put familiar artwork on cards: it can represent recognizable parts of the games as pieces of a playable system.

Square Enix’s launch announcement highlighted characters including Cloud, Terra, Lightning and Noctis, alongside creatures such as Chocobos and Behemoths. Shoichi Ichikawa, Producer of the FINAL FANTASY series at Square Enix, described the collaboration as a way to bring the franchise’s lore and legacy to life through Magic’s strategic gameplay. That is the publisher’s perspective on the project, rather than independent evidence of fan reception.

What can you play, and which cards are legal?

There are multiple ways to approach the release, but legality depends on which product group a card comes from. Wizards’ collecting guide lists the main FIN set as Standard legal. Final Fantasy Commander (FIC) and Through the Ages (FCA) cards are listed as Commander, Legacy and Vintage legal; reprints retain any legality they already had. Check the individual card’s set code and current format rules before building a deck, since legality can change.

For a particular interaction, use the official card text and release notes.
