Universes Beyond is the broader Magic: The Gathering brand for collaborations with worlds outside Magic; Secret Lair is a product line that can release some Universes Beyond cards. They are not competing names for the same thing. A Universes Beyond collaboration may arrive as a Secret Lair drop, a Commander deck, or a full set, among other forms.
What do the two labels mean?
Wizards of the Coast introduced Universes Beyond in 2021 as a brand alongside its existing Magic products. It describes the fictional worlds and properties a collaboration draws on. Wizards characterized those products as generally available through Magic sales channels, rather than as Secret Lair-only releases.
Secret Lair, by contrast, is a product line and release format. The distinction is about what each label identifies: Universes Beyond is the broader brand, while Secret Lair is one way a product can be released. Wizards has also said Universes Beyond cards are Magic cards.
Can a product be both Secret Lair and Universes Beyond?
Yes. A Secret Lair drop can be a Universes Beyond release, but the two labels are not interchangeable. Wizards’ 2023 design article describes Universes Beyond products as ranging from small Secret Lair drops and card treatments to Commander decks, small sets, and large draftable sets. A collaboration can therefore span several product forms rather than being one Secret Lair release.

- Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
- Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
- Mint/Excellent condition only.
The Warhammer 40,000 collaboration illustrates the overlap: Wizards announced four Commander decks and three Secret Lair drops as parts of the same collaboration. The wider collaboration is Universes Beyond; the drops are Secret Lair products within it.
Are Universes Beyond cards only sold as Secret Lair drops?
No. Universes Beyond has appeared in multiple forms, including Commander decks and booster sets as well as Secret Lair drops. Wizards’ current catalog, accessed October 7, 2026, lists releases including The Hobbit, Marvel Super Heroes, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and FINAL FANTASY. The catalog changes over time, so consult it for current listings and product details: Wizards’ Magic product catalog.

How do availability and reprints differ?
Do not assume every Universes Beyond product is sold through the same channel or on the same schedule. Wizards’ 2021 description said such products would generally use the channels for other Magic products, but that historical statement does not establish present stock or distribution for any specific release. Check that product’s official page for current availability.
Card availability can also depend on the particular release. In a 2021 update about an upcoming Secret Lair Universes Beyond drop, Wizards said it planned to make in-Magic versions of mechanically unique cards, with approximate timing and availability through The List. The announcement was explicitly limited to the products it discussed and noted that plans could change; it is not a standing promise for every later drop. See the Secret Lair Universes Beyond update.

What about format legality?
Legality depends on the release and the individual card, not just on whether it carries the Universes Beyond label. In October 2024, Wizards announced that new Universes Beyond booster sets released from 2025 onward would be designed to be legal in all major Constructed formats. It said the change applied going forward and did not change the legality of existing sets; the announcement also distinguished cards and products outside the main booster set. Check Wizards’ Universes Beyond legality announcement and the relevant product or card information for a specific case.

What does Universes Beyond aim to capture?
Universes Beyond is not only a label for licensed characters; Wizards has also described a design goal for adapting a property into Magic. In a February 2026 article about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set, designer Mark Rosewater wrote that “A good Universes Beyond design captures the essence of the property.” He also said design teams work with subject-matter experts and the licensor. Those comments explain the stated design intent, not a guarantee that every fan will agree with a particular adaptation. Read Rosewater’s article, “The Heroes in a Half Shell Game”.
