Neither guarantees that a particular game will work well: compatibility depends on the title, emulator build, game files, and PC.
What is the difference between xemu and Xenia?

The Xenia project describes itself as “an open source research project for emulating Xbox 360 games on modern PCs.” Xenia has a Master branch with sporadic updates and Canary, which receives more frequent community releases and includes additional features, compatibility reports, patches, and recommended game settings. Use the official project download links: Xenia warns that impersonating sites exist.
Will a particular game work?
Check the exact game rather than assuming that a console generation or emulator supports every title equally. Compatibility reports describe results for a particular build and computer, not a guarantee for every setup.
Checking an original Xbox game in xemu
xemu’s status reports are based on community experiences with specific emulator versions and systems. A report marked “Playable” does not rule out failures on another PC. The project’s FAQ notes that a corrupted game dump, system problems, cache issues, or a compatibility regression can affect results. If the report identifies a version, trying that version may help distinguish a title issue from a change in a newer build.

Checking an Xbox 360 game in Xenia
Use Xenia Canary’s current compatibility tracker and the settings references for the exact title. Some games need title-specific settings or community patches for fixes or improvements, including rendering fixes or frame-rate unlocking. Start with the recommendation for the build you are using; if you report a different result, include the emulator build and your hardware so others can interpret it.
What PC specs do you need?
These are project-published configuration thresholds, not measured performance guarantees. A PC that meets them may still struggle with a particular game.

xemu requirements
- Operating systems: Windows, macOS, or Linux.
- Graphics: An OpenGL 4.0-compatible GPU. xemu says most recent integrated GPUs will work, but actual game performance varies by system and the project changes over time.
Xenia Canary requirements
The following figures are from the Xenia Canary Quickstart, edited July 13, 2026:

Xenia’s Quickstart says AMD GPUs are not recommended because driver bugs can cause crashes, and that integrated GPUs generally deliver frame rates too low for comfortable play. It also warns that even the recommended configuration does not guarantee perfect performance.

What setup does each emulator require?
Preparing xemu
- Get the emulator from the xemu project. Choose the build for your operating system.
- Prepare the required system images. xemu’s required-files guide lists an MCPX boot ROM image, a flash ROM/BIOS image, and a hard-disk image. The project says some required files cannot legally be distributed and describes dumping them from a physical Xbox. Use the project’s instructions and follow the laws that apply where you live; this article does not provide or direct you to unauthorized firmware downloads.
- Use a suitable BIOS and disk image. According to xemu’s guide, an unmodified retail BIOS cannot boot games because required DRM functions are unimplemented; a debug BIOS or a modded retail BIOS capable of booting unsigned software is needed. The project offers a prebuilt 8 GB hard-disk image containing an unsigned basic dashboard, not copyrighted dashboard content.
- Prepare the game image in a supported format. xemu emulates the console hardware, so its FAQ says to use a disc image of your game backup rather than load
default.xbedirectly. Redump-style ISO and CHD images are not supported as-is; check xemu’s current instructions for compatible image preparation. - Compare your result with the title report. If the game fails, check its reported emulator version and consider whether the image, cache, or system setup could be the cause.
Preparing Xenia Canary
- Download Canary using the official project link. Canary is the more frequently updated community-maintained fork; the project also maintains Master, which receives sporadic updates.
- Follow the current Quickstart to prepare and import the game. Xenia’s guide says games cannot be played directly from the console disc drive. It also says Xbox 360 system files are not required.
- Look up the exact title before changing settings. Check the compatibility tracker and the settings or patch references for your build. Apply title-specific recommendations where needed rather than assuming a single global setting works for every game.
Which emulator performs better?
There is no reliable basis here for declaring xemu or Xenia categorically faster. They emulate different console generations, and the available project documentation does not provide a controlled comparison using the same game and hardware. Performance depends on the title, emulator version, PC components, graphics API and drivers, and configuration. Use each project’s hardware guidance as a starting point, then assess the exact game on your own machine.

No specific controller is established as necessary. Both projects document controller use or setup, so first try a controller you already own that your operating system recognizes. Check that its buttons and sticks map correctly in the emulator before deciding whether you need different hardware.
