A preliminary magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck near Leongatha in South Gippsland at 2:01am AEDT on Saturday, October 3, 2026, and was felt across a wide area, including Melbourne. A magnitude 3.1 aftershock followed at about 2:56am. At the time of publication, no injuries or damage had been reported.
What happened near Leongatha?
Geoscience Australia recorded the main shock at a preliminary magnitude of 4.8. ABC News reported that it was shallow, at about 10 kilometres deep, with the epicentre near Leongatha, roughly 135 kilometres southeast of Melbourne. These are preliminary details reported during the breaking-news period and may be revised.
The event occurred at 2:01am local time. Victoria observes AEDT on October 3; the VicEmergency notice also listed times in UTC. The ABC reported that more than 16,000 felt reports had been received by 3am. That figure counts reports received by then, not every person who felt shaking.
Was there an aftershock?
Geoscience Australia and VicEmergency recorded a magnitude 3.1 aftershock at about 2:56am local time. ABC quoted geophysicist Hadi Ghasemi explaining that aftershocks can occur and tend to become less frequent over time. Their occurrence and timing cannot be ruled out based on that general pattern.

What should people do after the earthquake?
VicEmergency’s community update said there was no immediate threat and no action was required. It advised people who felt the earthquake to stay calm, check for hazards and be prepared for further possible aftershocks.
- Check your surroundings for hazards after shaking, including anything that may have shifted or fallen.
- Stay alert for possible aftershocks and follow official emergency updates.

- Call Triple Zero (000) only in a life-threatening emergency.
How does it compare with Victoria’s recent major earthquakes?
Contemporaneous coverage described the Leongatha-area quake as Victoria’s largest since October 2023. It was not the largest in the state’s recent history: Victoria’s magnitude 5.9 earthquake in September 2021 was stronger.

ABC News reported no injuries or damage at the time of publication. That is a snapshot from the breaking-news period, not a definitive final accounting. Ghasemi told ABC: “The shaking was widely felt, close to the epicentre. It was a strong shake but I don’t expect any major damage,” an expert expectation rather than confirmation that damage was impossible.
