Maingear Retro98: A Windows 11 Gaming PC With 1990s LAN-Party Style

Maingear’s Retro98 pairs a beige SilverStone FLP02 case and 1990s-inspired details with modern gaming hardware, including GeForce RTX 50-series graphics, DDR5 memory and NVMe storage. It is a contemporary Windows 11 desktop dressed like a late-1990s PC—not a Windows 98 machine. Maingear says the limited release totaled 38 systems; its standard configurations are listed as sold out, while the Retro98α’s current availability needs confirmation.

What the Maingear Retro98 is—and is not

Announced on January 29, 2026, Retro98 is a limited-edition gaming prebuilt built around SilverStone’s retro-beige FLP02 chassis. Its old-school appearance is the point; inside are current-generation components and a modern operating system. The 5070 listing specifies Windows 11 Home, while the range includes RTX 50-series graphics, DDR5 and NVMe storage. Maingear’s announcement and its Retro98 collection page describe the design and configurations.

That makes it a modern gaming tower with a retro theme, not a period-correct computer. It does not promise Windows 98 compatibility or reproduce the software, storage, peripherals or networking of a 1990s LAN party. The floppy-drive-like front details are decorative, according to Windows Central’s launch coverage; no floppy or optical drive is established as included.

Retro details on the outside

The FLP02’s beige tower silhouette, front drive-bay styling, physical turbo button and keyed power lockout make the reference immediately legible. Maingear also highlights a fan-speed display and front I/O concealed behind the front-panel branding. These are aesthetic callbacks, not evidence that the computer recreates old hardware behavior: the turbo button should be read as a nostalgia feature, not a 1990s CPU speed switch.

The cultural cues point to CRT-era PC gaming, CDs, dial-up modem culture and LAN staples such as Quake, StarCraft, Age of Empires and Diablo. Yet the actual networking is thoroughly current: the 5070 listing includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4 and 5Gbps Ethernet, alongside USB-C. The look recalls the era; the connectivity does not.

Maingear lists the α at $9,799. The GPU remains an RTX 5090, so the price difference cannot be read as a straightforward gaming-performance premium. The higher-tier CPU, memory, storage and custom loop are real configuration differences; limited production and collector-focused design also shape the price. The available specifications do not establish that the α delivers proportionately more gaming performance.

How limited is the release, and can you still buy one?

Maingear’s collection page states that the drop totals 38 systems: 32 standard Retro98 PCs and six Retro98α units. Some launch coverage reported five α systems, but Maingear’s current figure is six, giving a total of 38.

As of August 18, 2026, Maingear’s collection page marks the standard configurations sold out, and the 5070 and 5090 product pages display sold-out status. The α page has shown a limited-stock signal in an earlier page snapshot, which is not reliable confirmation of inventory now. Check its live product page and checkout before making plans; availability, freight and other purchase terms can change. The listed system is a tower, not a bundle with a monitor, keyboard, mouse or speakers. Standard-model shipping estimates shown previously should not be treated as current offers for sold-out systems.

If the standard models are unavailable, resale may be the only route to that exact configuration, but there is no verified resale price here. A second-hand buyer should account for possible shipping damage, uncertain provenance, warranty-transfer terms and whether the custom components are original. A retro-style self-build is another route to the beige aesthetic, but it would not carry the same Maingear build, support or limited-edition provenance.

Is it really a modern gaming beast?

On paper, yes: the upper models combine an RTX 5090 with either a Ryzen 7 9850X3D or Ryzen 9 9950X3D, while the α adds 64GB of DDR5 and Gen5 storage. Those specifications place the system in the premium enthusiast category and are designed for demanding modern games.

That is a component-based assessment, not a measured result. The available launch materials and product listings do not provide independent Retro98 benchmarks, game frame rates, thermal measurements or acoustic tests. They therefore cannot establish a particular resolution, graphics setting, noise level or performance advantage over another PC. Treat “beast” as a description of the hardware class, not a verified benchmark ranking.

Who is Retro98 for?

  • A good fit: collectors, retro-PC fans and gamers who want a distinctive beige tower with contemporary components, and who value a finished limited-edition prebuilt.
  • A poor fit: buyers focused primarily on performance per dollar, anyone seeking authentic Windows 98-era compatibility, or shoppers who need a readily available system.
  • Before buying: if upgrade flexibility matters, ask Maingear about component access, cooler placement, chassis clearances, power-supply configuration and GPU replacement. The listings do not settle every future upgrade question.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
