Make Way is most appealing as a local game-night racer for groups who enjoy making the course as much as driving it. Players build a track from chosen pieces between short races, then tackle the growing route amid weapons, obstacles and collisions. If your group prefers polished fixed circuits or predictable competition, its improvisational chaos may be a drawback.
What makes Make Way different?
Most arcade racers send players around a finished circuit. Make Way has players choose and attach track sections as they go, extending the route between races. As Thomas Harrison-Lord wrote in his OverTake review, “There are no pre-determined circuits to drive.” The track-building is the central twist, not a separate construction mode.
Harrison-Lord describes a quick loop: pick pieces, race the course, score at checkpoints, then add more track for the next round. He says an initial stretch can take as little as 30 seconds; that is a description of a possible segment, not a promised match duration. Weapons, ramps, obstacles and collisions make races unpredictable, shifting the focus from clean laps toward playful disruption.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
A good fit for a lively group
- You want short, competitive rounds that are easy to pick up.
- Your group likes improvisation and deciding how a course develops.
- Bumping rivals and dealing with hazards sound entertaining rather than frustrating.
- You want to play together locally: Switch Scores lists the Switch version for one to four players.
Consider another racer if…
- You prefer familiar circuits, consistent racing lines or a more simulation-oriented driving challenge.
- Random hazards and player-caused chaos would feel like interference rather than fun.
- Your main reason to buy is online matchmaking and you need assurance that races are easy to find now. The available review evidence does not establish current matchmaking activity.
How do local and online multiplayer compare?
Local multiplayer is a natural way to experience the track-building and collisions together. The Switch Scores listing specifies one to four players, while OverTake’s January 2024 review describes local play as well as online races with up to three other people. It also reported public races, code-based invitations and cross-platform online play at that time.

That same OverTake review said its reviewer had difficulty finding an online race. This is a dated observation from January 2024, not a measure of current population or matchmaking on any platform. If online play is your deciding factor, check current platform-specific information before buying; the cited pages do not show today’s queue times or player counts.
For a local setup, Switch Scores establishes the Switch version’s one-to-four-player listing, and Steambase lists full controller support for the Steam version. Those sources do not establish which controller models are required, whether extra controllers are included, or exact controller compatibility on every platform. A generic Nintendo Switch controller may be relevant if you need another local input device, but no particular model is identified as necessary.

Published review scores differ by platform and aggregation, so they should be read separately rather than combined into one verdict.

These are different platform-specific samples and scoring systems, not directly comparable ratings. GameFAQs reproduces GameGrin’s description of the game as “the perfect mix of a racing and building game,” and God is a Geek calls it a “simple yet fun take on arcade racing.” Those assessments point to the same strength: creativity and randomness. They are less useful as promises that every group will enjoy the chaos.

Platform and release details
GameFAQs lists Ice BEAM Ltd. as developer, Secret Mode as publisher and 26 June 2024 as the PS5 release date. Switch Scores lists Secret Mode as publisher and 4 December 2023 as the UK/Europe Switch release date. These dates refer to the specific platform and region listings; they should not be treated as a single worldwide launch date.
OverTake’s January 2024 review disclosed that the reviewer received a publisher review code and tested the PC/Steam version. Its platform availability comments reflect that review’s date, so later platform listings are more relevant for current platform-specific availability.

Verdict
Make Way is a distinctive party racer for players who want to build an increasingly unruly course and compete through brief, unpredictable rounds. Its best-supported use case is local play with a group that welcomes collisions and improvisation. Online play was described as cross-platform in a January 2024 review, but that review cannot tell you whether matchmaking is healthy today. Buy for the track-building party-game premise, not on the assumption of a dependable online scene.
