Its core is an RP2040 microcontroller board, but the available report does not identify the board model or provide a complete, reproducible parts list.
What the Codec communicator does
In Metal Gear Solid, the Codec is a way for Snake to contact people who provide support and information. Konami’s METAL GEAR SOLID INTEGRAL (Master Collection Version) online manual describes it this way: “The codec lets Snake contact other people for support, hints, and information about the game’s goings-on.” The game interface uses frequencies to reach contacts; choosing an incorrect frequency produces “No response.” A memory window lists previous contacts, and Mei Ling is the contact used to save progress.
The 3DSage project, reported by Zoe Skyforest at Hackaday on June 1, 2025, adapts that idea into a handheld prop with a working voice link and a small display. It is a fan interpretation, not an official Konami hardware design or a complete replica specification. The game’s fictional Codec functions and frequencies should not be mistaken for the hardware capabilities or radio settings of the real build.

The report describes a system assembled from separate control, display, motion, audio, power, and enclosure elements. It does not name exact component models.

The official manual documents in-game contacts and their frequencies. Those values describe gameplay, not the real prop’s radio hardware:

The communicator’s reported walkie-talkie is a real short-range voice device; the game’s frequency-selection interface is a fictional communication mechanic. The available project account does not say that the build transmits on, or reproduces, any of the manual’s listed frequencies.
What you can—and cannot—use as a build guide
The report gives a useful high-level architecture for someone planning a similar prop: combine a microcontroller, motion sensor, LCD, walkie-talkie electronics, rechargeable power, and a custom enclosure. It is not enough to reproduce 3DSage’s device exactly. The account does not provide dimensions, a wiring diagram, source files, a full bill of materials, a named RP2040 board, or a specific walkie-talkie model.

That means a parts search should treat these as component categories, not verified shopping picks. A compatible RP2040 board, MPU6050 module, small LCD, walkie-talkie kit, and suitable battery-and-charging arrangement are the relevant categories, but compatibility and integration details cannot be confirmed from the report. For a simpler display-focused prop, prioritize the enclosure and game-style graphics; for a functional communicator, plan for the added radio hardware and its integration. Motion sensing is another distinct feature rather than a requirement for every replica.
